The two children were full of energy and motivation, even as the snow fell heavily outside.
Inside, a few candles were lit, making the room quite bright, if not as bright as day. The three siblings were busy working hard, and seeing that they showed no signs of fatigue, Jian Dan didn't feel comfortable asking to finish early.
The two boys took turns kneading the dough and rolling out the wrappers. It was a simple task, and they mechanically repeated the actions of making dumplings. The filling became less and less, and one batch of dumplings after another was sent outside.
After all the basins were wrapped, all that could be seen from the outside was the dazzling white light reflected against the snow.
Large snowflakes fell on the dumplings, their momentum undiminished. Stepping into the yard, the snow reached right up to the calves.
After setting the dumplings out in the yard, Cheng Rui hunched his shoulders and went inside, rubbing his hands together with a hissing sound.
"Sis, it's so cold outside. I wonder if the snow will stop tomorrow?"
Jian Dan didn't pay much attention; after busying herself for half the night, she was a little hungry.
Are you hungry? Shall we cook something first?
The two children naturally had no objections. The stomachs of teenagers are like bottomless pits. Dinner had been out for several hours, and they had been working non-stop like spinning tops, which had also consumed their energy. Of course they were hungry.
After working through the night, the siblings ate a bowl of midnight snack and went back to their rooms, sleeping soundly.
I was planning to go to bed early, but I was woken up early by a loud banging on the door. I sat up with a start and shivered from the cold air in the room, so I quickly wrapped the blanket tighter around myself.
In the west room, the two brothers were also awakened at the same time. They listened to the sounds outside the door, exchanged a glance, and quickly got out of bed to put on their cotton-padded coats.
Cheng An pushed open the door and went to the main gate, while Cheng Rui went to light the firewall.
As soon as Cheng An pushed the door open, he realized something was wrong. The door, which he could usually push open easily, was now resisting. He had to use a lot of effort to open it and was dumbfounded when he saw the snow that was almost up to his knees.
The knocking grew louder and louder, accompanied by shouting.
"Simple! Xiao Rui! Xiao An! Can you hear me?"
Cheng Rui lit the fire wall, heard the sound, and came over as well.
"This looks like Zhouzhou's dad?"
Cheng An had already sensed something was wrong. He looked at his watch; it was only seven in the morning. Since it wasn't time for work, Lin Dongfang and the others knew about Jian Dan's situation and wouldn't come knocking on the door so early unless there was a reason.
Without hesitation, he turned around and grabbed two shovels.
"Quickly, clear the way!"
At the same time, he shouted towards the gate.
"Brother Lin, we heard you. Please wait a moment, we'll open the door for you right away."
The person outside the door paused for a moment, seemingly slightly relieved.
Jian Dan, who was inside, also came out wearing a cotton-padded coat. A strand of hair was still stubbornly sticking up, and her eyes were full of sleepy confusion.
"What's wrong? What happened?"
She was immediately hit by a blast of cold air as soon as she stepped outside, shivered, and instantly snapped awake.
"Wow! This snow!"
She's lazy, not stupid.
She wasn't completely shielded from all kinds of information resources from her past life; she would occasionally hear a few news reports and know that there was heavy snow in Northeast China. But she also knew that everything should be done in moderation, or it would become a disaster.
Looking through the slightly ajar door at the large snowflakes still falling in the yard, Jian Dan's heart sank straight down, her heart turned cold, and the person who was qualified instantly became incredibly calm.
I never heard of any snow disasters in Northeast China in my past life. Could it be that my life and my past life are truly two completely unrelated paths?
The two children used shovels to clear a path through the doorway and barely managed to open the main gate.
"Brother Lin, what happened? Why did you come so early?"
Lin Dongfang and Ling Weidong were standing outside the door. Upon seeing them, they first looked them up and down.
"Are you all alright? How's everything at home?"
Cheng An frowned and glanced behind them. It seemed there were many people moving around outside.
"We're all fine, we've been sleeping. Brother Dongfang, Brother Ling, what happened?"
Cheng Rui had already stepped out of the doorway, following in the footsteps of several people. The direction of the village was still a vast expanse of white, but every now and then, he could see some black dots gathering together and moving about. Clearly, those were human heads.
There was a faint, indistinct sound of crying and commotion, but it was too far away to hear clearly.
Having grown up in a military region, he certainly had that much awareness.
"Has something happened over there?"
It snows in the Northwest too, and if you think about it carefully, this situation is actually quite familiar.
In a flash, the two brothers came up with the same idea.
"Could the heavy snow have caused the house to collapse?"
"Did the house collapse?"
Jian Dan followed the two children's footprints and happened to hear this. His expression paused for a moment, and he looked up at the still gray sky.
"Could it be a snowstorm?"
Ling Weidong quickly looked her over, then glanced at the house behind him. Everything was intact, and he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
"It's uncertain now. There are no phones in the village, so it's inconvenient to contact the outside world."
In this situation, leaving the village is unrealistic, and we can't even go out to ask for help.
So, for now, we can only wait for the snow to stop; there's really no better solution.
Lin Dongfang sighed.
"When I went to the village office to see the village chief this morning, I heard from the old folks in the village that this year's harvest is not good."
Cheng Rui followed in Lin Dongfang's footsteps and ran a short distance into the village, then came running back, his body steaming, though his little face remained serious.
