Cheng Chao wasn't one to be overly concerned with saving face. Thinking back to his first meeting with Jian Dan and the several times he seemed to fall from the sky in the deep mountains, he immediately lost all interest in what he had just thought about.
Forget it, the girl is too strong; there's really no use for him. He'd better just obediently get back to work.
"Tell me, if neither Dongfang nor I were here, how would you handle all this meat?"
Seeing that he didn't bring it up again, Jian Dan was overjoyed.
"What's there to be afraid of? Aren't there two capable laborers here? They're so skilled, how could it possibly be my turn?"
A smile, tinged with pride, appeared on Cheng An's face as he tended the fire.
"Exactly, we can all do it, why would we need my sister?"
"Oh, so I underestimated you? Now look at all this meat, how do you plan to eat it properly?"
Cheng An didn't stand on ceremony and came over to rummage around.
"Aren't these all gazelles? Did Little Grey raid the sheepfold?"
"Lamb, hot pot, barbecue, dumplings, sis, how would you like to eat it?"
Although they were still savoring the taste of the venison they had just eaten, it didn't dampen their anticipation for the next meal.
Even the simplest ones are no exception; they smack their lips twice.
"Xiao An, didn't you guys not get enough pickled cabbage when we ate the pork stew the other day?"
How about we make a lamb and sauerkraut hot pot?
Being remembered by someone is a very pleasant thing.
Cheng An's face was warm, and her eyes were bright.
"Okay, then I'll go to the village to exchange some pickled cabbage."
Lin Dongfang knew that his family hadn't pickled any sauerkraut this year.
"Then don't bother with it. Mine is fine. I learned it from Liu Sanye's daughter-in-law. It's pretty good. Xiao An, go get some. They haven't come over yet."
"Why!"
Cheng An didn't stand on ceremony. He went back into the house to get a basin and then went out the door.
When they brought over a bowl of pickled cabbage and Mingzhu led the child, the two grown men had already skinned and chopped up several prey animals. They had also cleaned up the bloodstains on the ground with snow. Apart from a lingering smell of blood, it was almost impossible to tell that there had just been a pile of bloody things here.
Following behind were Lin Zhengde and Lao Yang, who had just sent Liu Weimin away.
"Where are we at? Do we need to help?"
Huizhou ran off as soon as she entered the courtyard, and Mingzhu followed behind without any hurry.
"Sir, you might not be able to get this job. This is meat, and Lin Dongfang is full of energy."
Old Yang laughed too.
"I agree with that. If there were meat, I'd be full of energy too."
Lin Zhengde laughed and scolded,
"You're all so pathetic."
Lin Dongfang just pushed open the door and came out, carrying a basin of meat in his hand. He was going to take it to the snow in the backyard to freeze it. In this area, the outside is a natural freezer in winter.
Things that are easily accessible and can be frozen are usually left outside to freeze.
Small pieces of semi-finished products, such as steamed buns, bean buns, and dumplings, along with small pieces of meat, were placed on a shelf in the backyard. Once frozen, they were put into a large vat in the woodshed, covered, and kept clean.
However, larger pieces of meat, or cleaned pheasants, ribs, and other items with bones, are simply buried in the snow and will remain frozen perfectly until after the Lunar New Year.
Seeing them return, Lin Dongfang didn't stand on ceremony and gestured to the back.
"Get all the rest out there, so we can cook later."
Lin Zhengde rolled up his sleeves, but he didn't hold back, complaining to Lao Yang.
"Look at these two, they dare to order me around, and they're even teamed up together. They're starting to treat me like a laborer!"
As he took the two lamb chops handed to him by Cheng Guo, he even weighed them in his hands.
"Not bad, this sheep is quite heavy!"
"Then you'll see that it's all good stuff, things you might not normally get to eat."
Old Yang laughed heartily.
"That's true. I've had a few big meals, but it was all thanks to Jian Dan."
They were chatting and laughing. With Cheng Chao, the older brother, around, not only was Cheng Jian unable to get involved, but Cheng Rui and Cheng An were also relegated to assistant work, and they almost lost their jobs even when it came to tending the fire.
Before leaving, they packed him a lamb chop and a large piece of meat, since Cheng Jin was still left behind.
After they left, my simple life returned to its hibernation phase.
Cheng An's injury is recovering well. To prevent this from happening again, the sisters have started their routine again: running around the foot of the mountain every morning, then practicing two sets of boxing, and finally going home for breakfast.
Having been lazy for so long, Jian Dan's bones were practically limp, but seeing her two children up early and looking so energetic, she felt too embarrassed to say anything that would spoil the mood.
The cold air rushed in, and Jian Dan immediately stopped thinking about anything else. At this temperature, if she didn't move, she would freeze in no time.
On the way back after practice, all three of them were steaming hot, and the child was still very worried.
"Sis, the glutinous rice is almost soaked. Shall we go borrow a stone mill to grind it later?"
After they got back that day, Jian Dan really took it to heart. She searched the whole house and even looked through her online space, but all she could find was thirty pounds of sticky rice.
She had planned ahead, promising to mail some to Zhu Yan. Chen Hongjun, who was employed there, didn't need much, so she would also send him some. Cheng Jin and the others around her would naturally get a share too. She also had two young children of her own, so she wasn't afraid of having too much. In this weather, it would freeze and keep.
If you really can't finish it, you can store it in your storage space and enjoy it occasionally in the summer.
Moreover, this definitely had to be done openly. She only planned to display a small amount of sticky rice in the open as a show. If she used all refined grains, it would be too conspicuous. So she went to the village and exchanged some sticky corn and sticky sorghum with the villagers.
