The educated youth looked at each other. Most of them had just arrived at the commune and had generally resolved their problems, but their faces were not very good. Almost all of them had grown up in the city, and the oldest was only in his twenties. They had only heard about such scenes from the old people. There was a difference between reading about it in books and seeing it with their own eyes.
Liu Jianshe nodded.
"Okay, that's good."
He seemed simple and thoughtful.
"Brother Jianshe, can I call the village office?"
After the truck carrying the first batch of mountain goods returned, Secretary Lin applied for a phone number here. However, they usually couldn't bear to touch it. Whenever Liu Aiguo or the others were on duty, they would wipe it clean and lock it in a drawer.
Even a simple person would doubt it; this phone hasn't won a single bet since it was installed.
Phone bills are expensive now; one phone call she makes can cost as much as several months' worth of expenses for a family in the village. If it weren't for the fact that it's really unsafe to go out now, she wouldn't want to make calls in the village.
"...Yes, yes, yes, go find Uncle Aiguo. He just went in. You can go find him."
"Okay, I'll make a couple of calls and be right back."
After explaining things to the educated youth, she went straight into the village office.
Liu Aiguo was a meticulous person. He held the telephone with great care, and even a little hesitant to move it, feeling that his rough hands and feet were not worthy of his delicate touch.
"You can continue fighting here without worry. I...I...I'll go out."
"Ah, ah, no need,"
Jian Dan realized that the other person was trying to avoid her, but she was just making two phone calls to let them know, and there was nothing she needed to hide from anyone.
"No need, Uncle, I'll be done soon."
One call was made to Fang Ping in the capital.
“Brother-in-law, you know about the situation in the south, right? A lot of people have come here to escape the famine, but the situation is still unclear. So please don’t bring this car over for now.”
"That's what I think too. The situation here is getting more and more serious. It started appearing one after another since I came back last time. Even if we can bring it back, we can't bring it out in the open now."
I was just about to tell you that your sister and I discussed that if things don't improve before the New Year, we won't mail you anything. It's so messy, and you'll have to go pick it up yourself.
Don't worry about sending us anything else. We'll be seeing each other for a long time, so it's not something we need to do right now.
"What's the rush? I'll give it to Sheng Zhiyuan and have the convoy heading that way take it to you."
After spending a lot of time together, Jian Dan and Fang Ping became quite familiar with each other, as did Zhu Yan, who was in the middle. Jian Dan didn't stand on ceremony.
"Okay, brother-in-law, I'll do as you say. I was just worried you wouldn't know the situation here and might send another car. Let's leave it at that for now, and discuss the next steps after this is over."
The second call went directly to Cheng Jin. Given the situation, they were bound to be busy; she herself hadn't expected the call to go through so easily.
"Uncle, we know about the situation outside. The village is under martial law, but it's still very safe. You don't need to worry about me here."
I know you'll be busy, so why don't you send the child back?
Cheng Jin over there was clearly taking a break from his busy schedule; he probably turned around and asked the person next to him.
"Let them come with us this time, young men. You have to face these kinds of things eventually."
"Fine, you decide."
Is my brother home? I told him about what I told him before, and told him not to worry.
"Okay, okay, I'll tell him,"
Cheng Jin was also in a hurry; the noise was constant and chaotic, and his voice was hoarse.
"Take care of yourself, and don't go out. This matter will probably keep you busy for a while, and I might not be back for more than a few days. If you need anything, just let me know."
Cheng Jin paused for a moment, and Jian Dan quickly interjected.
"No need, no need, I don't lack anything, I have everything. If you need anything,
She glanced around and saw that Liu Aiguo had already left; she was alone in the room.
“I told my brother, and he'll know. If there's anything we don't have, I can think of a way to get it done.”
Cheng Jin glanced at his nephew standing in front of the table.
"Okay, got it."
The first thing I said after hanging up the phone was,
"What secrets do you two have? What do you need to tell me to find out?"
Cheng Chao covered the corners of his mouth that were turning up.
"Hey! Well then, you should stop asking about things between us brothers, there's a generation gap."
Cheng Jinqi angrily threw the book next to him away.
"roll!"
Cheng Chao caught the book.
"Fine, I'll get out of here. The people below have already gone out to maintain order. But you all know that with force, these kids can't really fight the civilians, so they don't have any advantage."
They're all in danger if they encounter someone who's starving.
"Okay, okay, didn't I know? I'm calling to urge them too."
Cheng Jin was already overwhelmed with problems, and seeing Cheng Chao's relentless pressure only fueled his anger.
"Get out of here, don't upset me. Don't I feel bad? There are difficulties up there too, aren't there?"
"snort!"
Cheng Chao turned to leave, but paused at the door and then turned back.
"How are those guys doing?"
Cheng Jin was about to curse when he suddenly realized something.
"Isolation, you mean?"
"It's nothing, I was just asking."
After throwing down that opening line, Cheng Chao walked away on his own, leaving Cheng Jin and Lin Zhengde pacing back and forth, their hearts pounding with anxiety.
"Tell us, what is he thinking? Tell us everything. What does this mean? It's making me so anxious."
Cheng Jin couldn't quite figure out what Cheng Chao was thinking, but after thinking it over, he also felt that the kid was brewing some bad idea.
