Chapter 625 Meeting, Missing

Upon hearing this sound, Cheng Chao looked up.

"Little Tiger? What are you doing here? Do you have a mission?"

I looked anxiously in the direction of the mountain.

Is it in a hurry?

Wang Xiaohu followed his gaze but couldn't see anything. He scratched his head.

"Probably because he was in a hurry. People have been waiting for you for half the afternoon."

Cheng Chao wasn't the kind of person who couldn't distinguish between what was important and what wasn't. Although he was concerned about simplicity, he also knew that there were no other options at the moment.

After pausing for a few seconds, Cheng Chao stepped out.

"Let's go, I'll go tell them to keep an eye on things."

Little Tiger followed closely behind.

"Yes, we should keep an eye on things."

At the village entrance, Old Han was still there. Cheng Chao didn't say much, only that he was in a hurry and asked him to pass on a message to Lin Dongfang, asking Lin Dongfang to take care of Jian Dan and that he could go to the military region to find someone if anything happened.

He was still uneasy until he saw the person, and he believed Lin Dongfang understood his meaning.

Old Han didn't find it strange. Everyone in the village knew that the two families were close. Lin Dongfang's wife and Xiao Jian, the educated youth, got along like sisters. The girl even called Xiao Jian "auntie".

"Okay, I'll talk to him about it in a bit."

Don't worry, Jian is very capable. I'll tell her you're here when she gets back.

"Huh?"

Wang Xiaohu, who was listening nearby, began to sense that something was amiss.

"Company Commander, it's already dark. Is Little Jian not coming back today?"

"Just ask Brother Lin to look after the yard."

Besides, didn't the regimental commander and political commissar say they had important matters to discuss and told Xiao Jian not to come back tonight?

Wang Xiaohu scratched his head, indicating that he didn't understand.

Cheng Chao also sensed something was wrong.

"What did you say? What do you mean you're not coming back? Why aren't you coming back?"

"Uh...Company Commander,"

Wang Xiaohu was very careful.

"It's already dark, you're not going to let Xiao Jian come back in the middle of the night, are you?"

"What do you mean, coming back in the middle of the night? What nonsense are you talking about?"

Wang Xiaohu glanced at the frowning, dark-faced company commander, then at the bewildered militiamen, quietly took a few steps back, and pursed his lips.

"Company Commander, Xiao Jian has been waiting for you for several hours. The car is just outside the village. Let's hurry back. The regimental commander and political commissar are anxious."

Cheng Chao is finally online.

"You're saying that Jian Dan went to find me?"

"Yeah yeah,"

Wang Xiaohu nodded quickly.

"I just told you to hurry up, Little Jian has been waiting for you all afternoon."

He was still upset, and he repeated himself several times, but the company commander seemed not to understand.

Cheng Chao was stunned for a moment, then quickly realized what was happening.

"Captain Han, I'm sorry, something came up at home, I forgot."

Could you please ask for a day off for Dandan? I'll take her home tomorrow.

It wasn't harvest season, so taking a day off wouldn't cause any problems. Before Lao Han could even nod, Cheng Chao turned and left. He'd made a mistake; he hadn't asked clearly enough, wasting so much time. If it weren't for something important, Cheng Chao wouldn't have gone straight there like that.

Thinking this, my pace quickened unconsciously.

"Little Tiger, hurry up and keep up."

"Hey, here I am."

Wang Xiaohu ran a few steps quickly, cursing inwardly, but ultimately didn't dare to make a sound.

"Old Han, you only realized you forgot after spending half the afternoon here?"

Old Han shook his head. That was clearly just an excuse, but some people actually took it seriously.

"It's their business, why do you care when they thought of it?"

"Alright, I'll go back and ask Xiao Jian for leave. You guys be on your guard tonight."

Simplicity doesn't have to be rushed.

Today, a female educated youth was digging for wild vegetables. I asked her about it yesterday, but she refused. She had eaten those wild vegetables several times, and now just looking at them gives me a headache.

Originally, it was just for show, but now she doesn't even want to pretend anymore. Everyone knows she has an older brother and an uncle here, and now another uncle has arrived. It shouldn't be too much to ask her to eat fewer wild vegetables, right?

She didn't want to run into people digging for wild vegetables, so she went straight into the deep mountains.

Springtime is not a good time for hunting. She had already hunted wild boars once before, and since she had nothing else to do this time, she kept walking in, also wanting to see the big pit from the gold mine before, since she still had a huge fake mission to complete later.

The deep mountains remained unchanged for her. In just a few months, the once bottomless ravine was now surrounded by vines and weeds, which, though not very tall, were still clearly visible upon closer inspection.

As they got closer, they could almost hear the roars of wild beasts coming from below.

Simple and uninterested, she figured that even the kings of the jungle couldn't escape this 'natural' trap, so she'd better not get involved.

Walking another four or five miles along this ditch, you'll reach the place that made Jian Dan frown.

There were obvious signs of human activity there; the weeds were trampled and stuck to the soil, and cigarette butts and matchsticks could be seen every now and then.

There were also clear and distinct shoe prints of military boots, and burnt-out ashes.

It hasn't rained recently, and you can still see some tool marks, like shovels or something sharp or angular. They're not deep, so they can't be excavations; they're probably surveying or something similar.

Moreover, judging from the moisture level of the soil, it seems that it hasn't been long.

She simply pursed her lips, not giving herself a chance to think further, and quietly followed the direction of the footprints.

Sure enough, after walking for another ten miles or so, these traces were still circling around the deep ditch. The furthest one was no more than two miles away, and the closest one was right at the edge of the ditch, where obvious signs of activity could be seen.

Jian Dan was even more certain that these people had come for the gold mine.

Moreover, judging from their aggressive approach, the information seems quite accurate.
