After a period of chaos, the child's fever finally broke.
The little one lay on the hospital bed, with Commander Lin standing silently by the bedside, exuding a sense of dejection and confusion.
Qin Qinghuai, who rushed over, was also somewhat puzzled. He had only heard the gist of the story, and asked Jian Dan in a low voice.
"How did this child end up in our house? Did he run off into the family compound? Did he go looking for you?"
"no,"
Looking at her elderly father's distressed face beside the bed, Jian Dan could only manage a bitter smile.
Didn't you ask Xiao Yi?
"We really owe this to him. If he hadn't been so vigilant on the mountain, the child might have already wandered into the mountains."
"Xiaoyi?"
Qin Qinghuai's eyes widened for a moment, and he immediately understood what was going on.
"Is it that hillside in front of the family compound? The hillside where Old Master Lin is buried?"
Jian Dan's eyes widened immediately.
"You mean, the child misses his grandfather?"
"There's only one reason. Otherwise, how could a child of just a few years old, without an adult to guide him, so accurately find the way up the mountain?"
A simple tear welled up in her eye. The child was shivering from the cold, seemingly unaware of it, still thinking of his grandfather.
"I wonder how Commander Lin is feeling?"
"He had already considered retiring from the military, but he didn't expect the old man to have an accident so soon. Perhaps he sensed his thoughts and felt that he had let his son down, and was starting to dislike him."
Looking at Commander Lin, Qin Qinghuai also wanted to sigh. In this situation, he might not be able to find a solution that satisfied both sides immediately, but when economic conditions allowed, retirement from the military was not the only option.
However, Commander Lin was born and raised in the countryside, and he had given most of his allowances to his family over the years. In the past six months, he had spent most of his allowance on his elderly father and young child. After all, the old man was injured and the child needed medicine, so he was probably struggling to make ends meet.
Those with substantial family wealth like them are a minority. The normal family situation is like that of Commander Lin, who meticulously plans every grain of food and tries to divide every penny in half.
Otherwise, the old man wouldn't have abruptly stopped taking his medication. As parents, they naturally care about their children. Who would abandon their child unless they were desperate?
Not to mention, there's also a little grandson who needs someone to take care of him.
"So, what do we do now? If the children are left, then Commander Lin will be able to relax?"
Zheng Aiguo, who had just arrived, pursed his lips and shook his head.
"When the old man and his child first came to join the army, the regimental commander was actually trying to find someone to take care of them. At that time, the old man's legs were still immobile, and he could hardly be left alone all day."
Children are also more fragile than they are now; they scream and yell if a stranger touches them.
At that time, some people went there, but none of them lasted more than a few days.
Later, the story got distorted as it was told, with all sorts of rumors circulating. Fortunately, the old man's wound was healing well, so the regimental commander stopped looking for him and simply had Xiao Hu run back and forth to deliver food or other supplies to them.
However, Xiao Hu only went there for a short while and couldn't do much. The child had been hurt a lot when he was alone and was bullied by other children. The old man was in such a state that he couldn't protect the child, and the regimental commander didn't have the time either. So, over time, this is how it ended up.
"Well, this needs to be resolved, right?"
Even if he retires from the military, it will still just be him and the child at home. He can't just stop working; the child's needs still need to be met, so it's better for him to stay in this familiar environment.
Zheng Aiguo is familiar with this place.
"We've thought of all the solutions. After finding someone to take care of the children, the old man wanted to ask someone to introduce a potential partner to the regimental commander. He didn't ask for anything, just that the woman he married could take care of the children. But the regimental commander himself disagreed."
Political Commissar, Sister-in-law, do you have any good ideas?
"The regimental commander has been here for so many years. Regardless of how he's treated us, his very title is enough to make the enemy retreat. If he were to retire because of that, wouldn't that be a significant loss?"
The child in the hospital bed inside also woke up. Commander Lin said something to him, then wrapped the child in his cotton coat and picked him up.
Qin Qinghuai glanced at the sky outside.
“You guys help Xiao Hu take Lin Tuan and the child home, and then come over to my house for dinner.”
Zheng Aiguo seemed about to refuse, but Qin Qinghuai shut him down with a single sentence.
"Your sister-in-law has everything ready."
Zheng Aiguo opened his mouth, looked at Qin Qinghuai, then at Jian Dan, and finally at Qin Yi, without saying anything more.
During dinner that evening, Jian Dan suddenly remembered what Qin Yi had said.
"Xiao Yi, did you encounter wolves on the mountain?"
"Oh, sister-in-law, it's a group, but they must have just finished fighting something. Some of them still have blood on them. They're probably full, so they don't bother with me. Otherwise, with my skills, I would have been torn to shreds in no time."
There was still a hint of lingering fear in his voice.
"I think I've finally found Brother Huai. I thought my skills were pretty good, but if I really encountered a powerful opponent, I'd be nothing. The wolf pack was right there, just staring at me coldly. They actually took a few steps forward, and I was so scared that the hairs on my body stood on end."
At that moment, I thought to myself, "Brother Huai, thank goodness it wasn't you. If it were you, tsk tsk!"
Qin Yi shook his head.
"Brother, your body has a serious injury. Do you think it's too late for me to start training now?"
Even if I die in battle, I'll still be a martyr. But if I really died in the jaws of wolves, I'd be too ashamed to face that.
