"These are all of them!"
She blinked simply, then mechanically turned her head.
"Say it again, what did you say?"
Qin Qinghuai was also stunned for a moment, and his sense of crisis rose to its peak once again.
"Sister, sister, my dad said these are all for you."
"No, are you crazy?"
Jian Xin grabbed her arm; the little girl, who was only shoulder-high, spoke very earnestly.
"Sister, you really can't blame him for this."
I heard you got married, and my dad was worried about what to give you as a gift. You returned all those things to him, so he's even more worried now, not knowing what you like.
Just then, I heard that it had snowed heavily here. My dad and my uncle discussed it and said that this place is a poor and remote area. If the snow really blocks the mountain, given your personality, you can't just watch others go hungry while you stay in the house and eat your fill.
I'll just give you some practical things to take with you. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future; I'll buy you whatever good stuff I see.
"Sister, he asked Uncle Lin and my eldest brother, and then my uncle also understood the situation here, which is why he had the convoy buy these things. Don't worry, they're all useful."
Simple blinked again, a wave of bittersweet emotion welling up in her chest.
"You don't need to do this,"
Sheng Zhiyuan seemed oblivious to her unusual behavior.
"You saved my daughter's life and raised her for several years, and you also saved my brother. How can this be repaid? You won't even accept this little something. Do you think it's too little and want me to give you the entire Sheng family's wealth?"
The simple, slightly sour feeling was instantly dispelled by the laughter.
"Come on, if you really want to donate these things to the army, you don't have to use me as a raft. Just ask Uncle Jian, and that will solve the problem."
"That's different,"
Sheng Zhiyuan didn't argue with her, but simply asked,
Do you accept things or not?
"Yes, we'll accept it. They've come all this way to our door; it's a timely help. Why wouldn't we accept it?"
After finding out the location of her personal belongings, she briefly turned to look at Qin Qinghuai and Commander Lin.
"Commander, Brother Huai, this is my friend. We have some connection, so he's practically family. He specially prepared these things for me. Although it's done in my name, it's still a token of the Sheng family's goodwill. Please unload the truck!"
After listening for a while, both of them were very excited. No matter what the title was, as long as it was applied to their brothers, they could live and continue to guard their posts.
The two men straightened up and solemnly saluted Sheng Zhiyuan in gratitude. This timely help would be etched in their hearts.
Sheng Zhiyuan wasn't after this small token of gratitude. Seeing the two of them run out to the assembly point, Jian Dan realized they were still standing outside. She took Xin Xin's hand and turned to walk away.
"Come to my place? Let's get together tonight. I haven't been out since I arrived, and I haven't been paying attention to a lot of things happening outside."
Sheng Zhiyuan grinned.
"Lunch was alright, but we won't be able to have dinner. After unloading the truck, we have to head over there. It's just a coincidence, and it's on the way. After unloading, we'll head to the county town, stay there tonight, and go directly to the village to collect the goods tomorrow morning."
I glanced at my watch. I'd left early this morning to catch the market; it was only ten o'clock now.
"Okay, let's go. Let's go to my place and warm up first. What does Xin Xin want to eat?"
Qin Yi, carrying a basket on his back, lagged two steps behind Jian Dan and couldn't help but grin. This was truly wonderful.
"Xiao Yi, give me the basket. Go find the regimental commander and your brother Huai and tell them that the guests will be having lunch at home. Ask them to arrange their time accordingly."
"Yes, sister-in-law, I understand."
Before Jian Dan could even reach out, Sheng Zhiyuan had already taken the basket from her.
"Alright, you're a grown man, what are you trying to prove?"
The little girl held his hand tightly, and Jian Dan didn't stand on ceremony with him, but simply gave Qin Yi some more instructions.
"Tell Brother Zheng, Xiao Hu, and Xiao An to come over in a bit, don't forget."
Sheng Zhiyuan followed at a leisurely pace, carrying a basket on his back.
"You've only been here a few days, but you're doing pretty well. You're already treating us?"
"Okay, I understand, sister-in-law."
Qin Yi agreed and ran off.
Simply look away.
"What do you think? You're underestimating me."
Xin Xin is so big now, what has she been learning from her uncle all these years?
Wait, isn't Uncle Jian your brother? Shouldn't Xin Xin call him "Grandpa"?
It was simple when I said it, but then I realized that the way I was addressed didn't seem quite right.
"Or is it that you're the older brother, Uncle Jian, but actually the younger brother?"
This wasn't a probing question, it was just casual conversation, and Sheng Zhiyuan didn't mind.
“He’s my brother, but the kids are used to calling him that. He’s not getting married, so my daughter might have to take care of him in his old age and see him off when he dies. He’s like an uncle or grandpa to me, the only difference between him and my own father.”
“Xin Xin, no, what’s the child’s name now? Are you planning to change it back? The name Jian Xin is still on my household registration.”
Upon hearing this, Sheng Zhiyuan's eyes darkened for a moment.
"The Sheng family is not so peaceful. It's not time for Shengshi to come back yet."
"Daughter, why don't you stay as Jian Xin for a few more years?"
"Hehe, I'd love to! I wish I could stay with my sister like family forever."
Entering the residential compound with a laugh, Sheng Zhiyuan looked around.
"This place isn't that far from that place, but looking at it, it always feels much more desolate."
I'm used to simplicity.
"There are few people and a lot of land here. Can't you see how big each family's yard is?"
However, it's too remote. Before, very few family members came to accompany the military. After I came, some more came, and now only about a third of the family compound is occupied.
This is Commander Lin's home. His family also suffered during last year's snow disaster. Now, there is only him and a three- or four-year-old child at home, who is Xiao An, whom I just mentioned. I don't know his full name.
