After all, no reasonable parents would want to trouble their children while they are still able to move around.
That's great, all my worries are gone.
The atmosphere in the camp instantly became much more enthusiastic.
Finally finding some free time, the group of brothers took their things and decided to go see Cheng Zhuo.
On the way, Cheng Chao explained to them,
"My second uncle refused to move in here, saying it was too comfortable and he only wanted to stay at the front-line outpost. However, I saw that he was in good condition, so I went along with him."
"I also heard from the regimental commander that with my second uncle there to keep things in order, he felt at ease. So he assigned those timid ones there. With my second uncle there, they reportedly improved a lot in a short time, but the conditions are even worse than here."
Hearing it is one thing, seeing it is another. I knew the conditions were poor, but I never imagined they were this bad. That's what I almost blurted out.
"Isn't this the cowshed?"
Cheng Chao understood what she meant. There weren't many people at this sentry post, but it was still an important position. This place was far too rudimentary, much like the cowshed in Liujiatun, with drafts coming from all sides.
Cheng Zhuo was talking to the young soldier on guard duty, pointing around nearby, clearly giving a lesson.
“Look, you all, he’s clearly very proud of himself.”
"Hey? What brings you guys here?"
Xiao Chao, when did you get here?
Cheng Zhuo was also very happy. He had come here out of despair, seeking peace and quiet, but seeing his family and children had brought him a rare moment of joy, his face beaming with smiles.
"It's been cold these past few days, why did you come here on this day?"
"Come in quickly, I'll light the stove."
All three were juniors, so Qin Qinghuai took over the work directly. He simply sat on the only stool, while Cheng Chao and Cheng Zhuo sat facing each other on a makeshift bed made of wooden planks.
"Second Uncle, you two sit down and talk, I'll do it."
"Okay, okay,"
As a parent, and essentially a father-in-law, he found his son-in-law increasingly pleasing, but seeing Cheng Chao's lack of ambition and carelessness only fueled his frustration.
"Xiao Chao, look at Qing Huai, look at yourself."
Cheng Chao was stunned.
"Second Uncle, what's going on? You have a son-in-law, so you don't even want your nephew anymore?"
"Ha, really? Then tell me, aren't they better than you?"
You two are about the same age, and he's already married. What about you? Where's your wife?
"Huh? This isn't fair. Why are they trying to force me into marriage in this roundabout way?"
"So, you and your uncle have already discussed this?"
Cheng Zhuoyi was delighted.
"What, did the third brother mention it to you too?"
Haha, that's just our tacit understanding. Look at you, over thirty years old, you don't even care about getting married, and we old folks have to worry about it for you. Aren't you ashamed?"
Cheng Chao has been worn down by this topic lately, and has lost all will to argue. He feels utterly hopeless.
"Oh dear, my second uncle, I've devoted all my energy to the army, wanting to contribute more to the country and the military while I'm still young, and you don't even support that?"
"Get lost! Do you think this is like when we're fighting a war, where we have to sacrifice our own families for the greater good?"
What era are we living in? We're at peace now. Those kinds of missions will only decrease in the future. Starting a family and having children allows you to fulfill your family's mission without hindering your contributions.
"Family, family mission? Second Uncle, don't tell me the Cheng family is counting on me to carry on the family line!"
This old-fashioned way of thinking doesn't seem like you at all.
"Who are you referring to? Xiao An or Xiao Rui?"
They'll need at least another ten years or so. How can you just shirk responsibility like that?
Simply add an outline on one side.
"You're really something. How come you react like you've stepped on a hedgehog whenever this topic comes up?"
Brother, are you…?
She simply tilted her head and looked at him for a while, making Cheng Chao feel extremely uncomfortable, before finally speaking.
"Do you already have someone in your heart, but you're too embarrassed to say it?"
Qin Qinghuai looked at Cheng Chao with sympathy; he was definitely regretting coming today.
"Oh dear ancestors, please spare me!"
"Let me give you a little more guessing. Are the babies coming out too?"
"Huh?"
Cheng Zhuo perked up.
"Then I'll admit defeat!"
"It's a bit unfair to the woman, but if you're really capable, I'll welcome your niece-in-law and child. All you need to do is take a beating."
"No, no, no,"
Seeing the murderous aura emanating from Cheng Zhuo, Cheng Chao quickly begged for mercy.
"Hypothetically speaking, nothing at all. If I were to actually do such a thing, would I still be a man?"
"I'll look, I'll look, okay?"
Cheng Zhuo paused,
real?"
"It's really, really, more precious than real gold."
Leaning against the wall, Cheng Chao was completely convinced.
"I'm just puzzled. I've been single for over thirty years, and you weren't worried at all. So why did you suddenly remember me the moment you got married?"
Qin Qinghuai had already lit the stove, and after a quick turn of the stool, he sat around the stove to warm himself.
"Second Uncle, your house is really suffering. Haven't you thought about repairing it or rebuilding it? The New Year is coming soon, and it's the coldest time of year. This drafty house is unbearable even for the healthiest person."
Cheng Zhuo's expression was indifferent.
"Hey, it's nothing, I'm used to it. Men are strong, this is nothing."
Cheng Chao shrugged and said, "See? It's not that I didn't try to persuade you."
She simply rolled her eyes and looked at Cheng Zhuo.
"Second Uncle, do your knees and the gaps between your bones often hurt?"
I guess those soldiers were probably like that too?
