Sister-in-law Wang was fine, but the other two were quite surprised to receive half a pound of brown sugar and two precious fruits after just exchanging a few words and helping out.
When people can't even get enough to eat, fruit is something only city dwellers can afford. They consider picking wild fruit from the mountains a luxury. However, these two plump, red apples and bright orange pears are nothing like the ones from their mountains. They've never even seen them before, let alone eaten them. They can smell their fragrance from a great distance.
“Jian, I’ll shamelessly accept the brown sugar, but this fruit is too precious. We can’t accept it. You have to take this back.”
All three families gave almost the same explanation, and it was only thanks to Qin Qinghuai that they reluctantly accepted it.
It's so simple to go out, I can only sigh.
"Some people are really honest; they don't even have an easy time giving a gift."
The poor have their own rules for survival. As long as they are not from extremely wicked families, they are generally simple and kind-hearted.
"Yes, one should not accept rewards without merit. They may not be well-educated, but they understand the basic principles. Life is society, and these are all based on their many years of life experience."
It's said that reading enlightens one's mind, but these people, besides lacking education and worldly experience, actually possess noble and humble character, which would only be icing on the cake.
"Yes, that's true. When people talk about rural people, their general impression is of dirt, mess, mud, unkempt appearance, cursing, tantrums, and threatening suicide. But actually, many rural people are not as pure-hearted as rural people."
"Yes, many people like to belittle others to show off their own strengths, but,"
A sentence just came to mind.
"But people tend to flaunt what they lack, right?"
Qin Qinghuai thought for a moment,
"I think it was written in some psychology book. I vaguely remember it. But it does make a lot of sense."
Now that you mention it, I remember seeing similar things in Beijing before. People who bought clothes or other rare items wanted to announce it to the whole world. These were mostly ordinary families, or even worse off. Perhaps they were used to a frugal life and only thought of showing off when they got something nice.
"Yes, that's a common human flaw."
The adults were busy at home, while many children ran around in the residential compound, creating quite a lively scene. Watching them, I couldn't help but recall past events.
"Hey, a few years ago it was Xin Xin, ah, no, it was Sheng Shi, the little girl who came last time. Later, Xiao An and Xiao Rui also lived with my child for a while. During that time, my child was always there, and the children from the village often came over, it was quite lively."
"You like children that much?"
She glanced at him briefly, sensing something was off, but didn't think much of it.
"It's alright. I don't think I like kids that much. I've always felt that I don't have much patience for kids. Anyway, these kids were all quite old when they came to me, so I don't have to worry about them much."
When I saw Xin Xin on the street, she was already this tall and could almost take care of herself. I didn't have to worry about her much; at most, I would provide her with some things, make some clothes, and give her some food.
Anyway, those unruly kids in the village are always throwing tantrums, or crying so hard, it's a real headache for me.
"You can do whatever you want with your own child."
"Of course! My child is so well-behaved, he's hardly ever cried. Unlike those other kids, they're all covered in mud like little monkeys. Look, look, they're fighting."
Not far away, several children were fighting over something, rolling on the ground. Their clothes buttons and shoes were flying off, and some of the black and yellow cotton wadding from their cotton-padded jackets was showing. Their faces were covered in tears and snot, with streaks of blood.
Qin Qinghuai only glanced at this image before immediately looking away.
"Sigh, you're right, your own child is always the best."
However, there were no adults outside, and since they had witnessed this, they couldn't just ignore it. Regardless of whether Qin Qinghuai was a leader or not, they couldn't just stand by and watch something happen in this family compound.
"cough!"
Qin Qinghuai straightened his face and coughed heavily.
What are you doing?
The group of children paused in their fighting and looked up. They didn't recognize Qin Qinghuai, but they saw his clothes every day. They were familiar with him but also intimidated by him, so they immediately stopped.
When he saw Jian Dan's ambiguous smile, his expression changed drastically. Without even needing to be urged, he scrambled to his feet and ran away.
"This kid is a good kid, but thankfully he's not completely lawless yet."
Look at him, he was too embarrassed to say it, but these children might have been frightened by her.
Ever since she returned from hunting wild boars last time, her fierce reputation has spread throughout the family compound. At first, some people even made a point of finding an opportunity to meet her, just to see if she was really that formidable.
Recently, after the family members came over, the rumors spread even more wildly. She overheard some things by chance, such as killing a wild boar with one punch and flying and eating children. She has no doubt that her image in the minds of the children in the family compound is at the level of being able to stop children from crying at night.
It's probably because, apart from Xiao An, no other child in the family compound likes her.
As the Lunar New Year approaches, the festive atmosphere grows stronger, and the residential compound becomes increasingly lively.
This is the first New Year since we came here, and also the first New Year after we got married. We didn't want to make do with anything simple. After breakfast, we took out all the delicious food we could think of and the best ingredients we had in our house, since it was just the two of them at home anyway.
Oh, and there's Cheng Chao, who was stranded here because of the heavy snow at the end of the year. They're not exactly strangers, and she didn't hold back. She picked and chose everything from flying creatures to running creatures to swimming creatures, and the food alone was so plentiful that it didn't even fill the whole table.
