Qin Qinghuai glanced at his watch.
"That's about an hour and a half. Is there anything else we need to pack up? Once we're done, let's head back. It's getting late, otherwise I could take you for a walk."
In this era, even in the capital, people could only sleep after nightfall. Except for those who had special activities at night, ordinary people had no nightlife. Moreover, the military compound was not located in a bustling area, so it was naturally pitch black outside.
Over the past few years, Jian Dan has long since adapted to this life of working at sunrise and resting at sunset. At first, she wasn't used to it and would often go into her online space to kill time at night. But after starting work, she gradually lost the mood and energy for it.
"If we can resolve everything today, we can go out again tomorrow. I haven't been back for several years, and I feel a bit like a stranger to myself."
However, since we've come out like this, shouldn't our parents still be the ones to handle this? It's not like you have to do it. So why did you come back?
Let me think, is it because you don't want to be separated from me, and you still want to come back and visit? Is that right, is that right?
Qin Qinghuai quickly begged for mercy.
"Your wisdom is truly admirable; I concede defeat!"
Back at the Qin family home, the living room was indeed quiet.
Qin Qingjiang and Qin Qingze were no longer there, nor were their children, and even Aunt Xu was nowhere to be seen. Only the old couple sat on the sofa, and for some reason, there was a sense of loneliness.
The two exchanged a glance, and Jian Dan immediately broke into a smile.
"Dad, Mom, why aren't you asleep yet?"
Did they know we were going to have a late-night snack, and that's why they're waiting for us here?
Qin Qinghuai paused, this was really a bit sudden, where did the midnight snack come from?
Indeed, the atmosphere at dinner wasn't great, and since there hadn't been any prior preparation, the food was rather limited, so the two elderly people probably didn't enjoy it.
"Brother Huai, how about you cook some noodles? The sour and spicy kind? Slurp!"
By the way, can Mom and Dad eat spicy food?
Brother Huai?
The man smacked his lips, and Qin Yi called him that too, but the way she called him that sounded so comfortable coming from her little mouth, and it even gave him an urge to take her right there and then.
She turned her head slightly and met the man's gaze, a gaze that held a certain unreadable emotion, a gaze that seemed to refuse to let her go at times. She immediately felt her face flush, gave him a reproachful glare, and coughed lightly.
"Brother Huai?"
Qin Qinghuai responded casually, then strode off into the kitchen.
"No problem, Mom and Dad both like strong flavors. Wait a moment, Mom and Dad will try my cooking too."
When Aunt Xu heard the noise and came out of her room, the sour and spicy smell from the kitchen had already reached the living room, and Jian Dan was already sniffing and waiting.
The old lady waved her hand.
“Go and rest. It’s not easy for the third son to come back. Let him do it. We can also enjoy our son’s filial piety.”
Jian Dan didn't say anything about helping or anything, but seeing the two elderly people looking so forlorn, he felt a little uneasy.
At this age, no matter how career-oriented one is, the balance has long since shifted towards family. When they return home, they certainly hope to be surrounded by their children and grandchildren. But here they are, all alone, staring at each other.
“I don’t have much talent for cooking, and what I make is just edible. But I’m lucky, Brother Huai’s cooking is exceptional. Every time he cooks, I can eat an extra bowl. You guys can try it later.”
"Okay, okay,"
The old lady didn't seem to have the same resentment as her son being bossed around.
"Before, he was always away in the army and rarely came back. It was hard to even see him, let alone cook. When did he learn to cook?"
We never expected to eat a meal cooked by our son.
"Hehe, as long as you guys don't feel bad about it."
The old man waved his hand.
"Young man, you're in your thirties, you've all settled down and started families. What's the big deal about doing this little bit of work? It's nothing compared to training!"
Simple's worries have finally been resolved.
Although Cheng Zhuo, Cheng Chengchao, and others had all said that the Qin family elders were easy to get along with, she wasn't entirely convinced. Everyone knew that getting along with neighbors and friends was a completely different matter from getting along with a daughter-in-law.
Some people are praised by everyone outside, but they are a completely different person at home. She is actually a little worried. Although they don't live together, who doesn't want their in-laws to be easy to get along with?
Now that I've seen it with my own eyes and experienced it firsthand, I can finally rest assured.
Her parents weren't closely related, and her only relatives from her previous marriage were a few people from the Cheng family. If her in-laws were approachable, that would be a blessing for her. Regardless of how much money they could give or how much help they could provide, having parents is a completely different thing than not having parents.
On a slightly cool evening, a bowl of hot, sour, and spicy noodles was a satisfying meal for everyone, especially the old man, who drank the broth from his bowl clean, exclaiming how delicious it was.
"During the war, sometimes when it was cold, we would chew a few chili peppers. Even if it didn't fill our stomachs, at least it would keep us from getting too cold. I was willing to eat that strong-flavored food. But now, the food is like boiled water, with no flavor at all."
I was thinking of asking Aunt Xu to give me a different flavor, but those doctors were still blocking my way.
Haha, this is still the most fun!
She simply grinned, and after having a late-night snack together, she felt their relationship had improved considerably, and she spoke more relaxedly.
"The doctor is probably worried about your health; indeed, high-oil and high-salt foods are bad for your health."
At this point, heavy salt intake might be possible, but heavy oil intake would be unacceptable, as most families don't have the means to do so.
Speaking of this, the old man started to complain.
