Liu Jianshe was not surprised at all. His previously gloomy face immediately lit up with a smile, and his eyes brightened with joy.
"Oh, Little Jian has made his move? What else is there to say? He can handle wild boars, how could he let this guy get away? Haha!"
"Little Jian, does that mean you won't have a chance to make a move over there?"
He simply grinned, tilting his chin up.
"Of course! Surrounded by a group of soldiers, I feel completely safe. Why would I need to show off my mediocre skills?"
Qin Yi grinned from ear to ear. His sister-in-law was still on their side; how prestigious that made him look.
Qin Qinghuai pursed his lips, feeling a little embarrassed. These words were a bit too grandiose and empty, completely ironic. It seemed that there was no one on the border with stronger martial arts than his wife.
She simply ignored the piercing gazes of the other female educated youths, and didn't bother to glare at the two troublemakers. She didn't want to be a laughingstock, so she quickly pulled Qin Qinghuai away to say goodbye.
"Brother Jianshe, you guys are busy, we have to go now, we'll come back to see you next time."
Lin Dongfang nodded, then pulled Qin Qinghuai away quickly, with Qin Yi following closely behind, as if afraid someone would chase them. Lin Liu Jianshe was speechless.
"She gets scared away after a couple of compliments. Why is she still like this even after getting married?"
"That's just her personality. Everyone else likes to be praised, but she hates it the most. She always reacts the same way. Wasn't it the same when we hunted wild boars? We wished we could keep her out of the sight of anything from beginning to end. She hates these kinds of things in the open and finds them troublesome."
Liu Jianshe also laughed.
"He's still a child."
"Isn't that right?"
With reddened eyes, Cheng Jin saw Professor Zhu and Professor Yu off to their cars. He was still somewhat unhappy that they refused to stay, but he knew what was important. After seeing them off, he stared at them intently until they were out of sight before turning to walk back to his own car.
"Political Commissar, this is something Comrade Xiao Jian brought for you. He asked me to heat it up for you tonight."
Cheng Jinqiang roused himself and opened the bundle. Immediately, a fragrant aroma filled the car. The guard driving forced himself not to turn his head, but he couldn't help but swallow hard. This is meat, isn't it?
This smells amazing!
Cheng Jin wasn't much better off; the soldiers couldn't get meat, and he, the political commissar, was in a similar situation.
"That brat, she didn't make a wasted trip back; she even brought me something."
"Let's go. Xiao Jian brought some roast duck. We'll take it to the cafeteria and have the chef make it into soup. Don't underestimate this small amount of duck; there's winter melon and roast duck soup, roast duck and sauerkraut soup, roast duck and radish soup, and duck bone soup—they're all delicious. Everyone should try them."
"Why!"
The guards perked up; even if they couldn't get meat, a taste would be nice.
Jian Dan and his family ordered several hundred roast ducks in Beijing. They left a few for the old couple, gave two to Lin Dongfang, and one each to Liu Jianshe and Liu Sanye. Cheng Jin knew that he wouldn't secretly have a special meal, so he simply packed fifty for him. It looked like a lot, but if they wanted to share it, there wouldn't be enough for each person to have a bite.
So Cheng Jin came up with this idea: roast duck soup. It sounds like a luxurious and nourishing name, but here it's a last resort. In the end, there will definitely be more side dishes and soup.
Cheng Chao didn't stay behind; he went with the car to settle the people in. His recent work focus was on assisting with land reclamation, planting, and animal husbandry on the border.
After getting on the bus and embarking on the return journey, Jian Dan inexplicably felt a strong urge to go home. She was still a little puzzled, after all, she had lived here for five or six years, while she had only been in the family compound for half a year at most. When did she start to miss it so much?
"What's wrong?"
Qin Qinghuai quickly noticed that she was in a bad mood.
"If you want to go and take a look, then we can stay here for a day. It just so happens that your second aunt is here too."
Simply shake your head.
"No need, it's only a matter of time before my second aunt goes back, there's no rush."
Why,"
Her whole body was stiff and sore from the car ride, so she shifted her position and leaned against Qin Qinghuai's arm.
"I've only been away for a few days, but I already miss home."
Before Qin Qinghuai could even process his gratitude, he heard a disdainful "tsk tsk" from someone nearby.
"I'm all alone, is this really appropriate for you?"
"Whose fault is it that you're all alone? It's your own fault for not being able to win back a sister-in-law. You're so old, how dare you criticize me?"
Qin Yi, in the passenger seat, burst out laughing, then quickly covered his mouth and lowered his head, not daring to look back at Cheng Chao.
Qin Qinghuai smiled too.
"Hey? How can you talk like that? Who's this old? Do you think your man is that much younger than me?"
Upon hearing this, Cheng Chao objected.
"I volunteered to dedicate my life to guarding the borders of our motherland. Even if I'm not a hero, it's still a great honor, okay? Why does it sound so bad coming from you?"
She simply turned her head and grinned at him.
"You're quite proud of yourself, aren't you? My Qinghuai was waiting for me all along. He rushed to marry me as soon as he got here. Unlike you, tsk tsk!"
Why are you shaking your head?
"I'm telling you, no wonder there are so many bachelors in your camp. It's all thanks to you guys setting such a good example."
The regimental commander, political commissar, and company commander are all bachelors, tsk tsk!
Those below will surely follow suit.
Political Commissar Cheng also said he would help everyone solve their personal problems. Why don't you guys set a good example?
Otherwise, how can we convince them?
Your reasoning is quite sound. Of all those people, how many are as single as you, truly without any worries about the future? All those only children in every family want to follow your example, humph!
