"Old man, let me tell you, we made the right choice coming here."
The old man looked completely bewildered.
"Are you exhausted? You just got here, what's wrong with that?"
However, my daughter-in-law's arrangements were indeed very thoughtful.
The old lady rolled her eyes at him, giving him a look that said, "You don't understand anything," before turning around and haughtily going into the house.
"Xiao Jing, tell them to pack their things, go wash up, change into clean clothes, and then go to Auntie's for dinner later."
The old man didn't react for a long time.
"Huh? Huh? You old woman, you're being mysterious now. Just explain what you mean!"
Fearing that people would notice something when they came over, Jian Dan and his family had already put away any unsuitable items in the house, and had also put some of the ingredients out in the open. They weren't worried about people seeing them now. After returning, they opened the doors and windows to ventilate the house, tidied themselves up a bit, and then prepared to prepare dinner.
Today is their first day here, and since she is the hostess and her daughter-in-law, she should be treated well.
There aren't many vegetables available to eat this season, and the seedlings in the yard haven't grown yet, so we mainly eat dried vegetables.
It's no secret that they can hunt easily, so it's not surprising that they have meat at home.
Pork stew with vermicelli, braised pork ribs, braised pork belly, chicken stew with dried mushrooms, stewed dried potatoes and dried eggplant, stir-fried cabbage with vinegar, scrambled eggs with scallions, stir-fried shredded potatoes, shrimp with chives, stir-fried peanuts, and finally, radish ball soup, sprinkled with a handful of tender cilantro, making the children swallow their saliva.
Qin Jing came to help. He watched as the dried vegetables were transformed into fragrant dishes by his third aunt. He observed the whole process: pork, chicken, chives, shrimp, cilantro, and the rest were dried vegetables and any winter vegetables that might have been stored. The pork and chicken could have been caught in the mountains. He saw the chives and cilantro in the garden, although they were still small. There was only one shrimp left. His third uncle and aunt had taken some large shrimp when they went back a few days ago, so it wasn't surprising that they had some themselves.
Without saying anything, the child figured it all out on their own.
"Third Aunt, it smells so good!"
The children watched longingly, but they were well-behaved; even though they were tempted, they only looked and none of them asked to eat, let alone mischievously reach for the food. This made Jian Dan feel very comfortable.
A family's values can be clearly reflected in its children, and the Qin family's children are obviously excellent in this respect.
The youngest, Qin Heng, couldn't help but sniffle, drooling and staring intently at the table. Jian Dan couldn't help but chuckle, deliberately teasing him.
"Oh dear, is that little glutton about to cry from hunger?"
The child reached out and rubbed his eyes.
"I didn't cry, I didn't cry,"
He simply reached out and touched the corner of his mouth; there was still a trace of drool there.
"Really? What is this? Isn't it just tears streaming from the corner of your mouth?"
The child puffed out his cheeks, correcting him angrily, but his tone was completely serious.
"That's drool from my mouth. It's because your cooking smells so good, Auntie. It made my mouth water."
She was joking, but the child's serious expression instantly broke her guard.
"Hahaha! Xiao Heng, you're so funny!"
Suddenly being hugged by her aunt, whose soft body carried a dry, fresh scent, made the child blush again, and she squirmed slightly.
"Third Aunt, I'm a boy, and you're a girl, so you can't hug me!"
"Oh dear, really? Sigh, Auntie was thinking of finding a child to help her taste the meat to see if it was cooked through. It seems Xiao Heng doesn't want to help Auntie?"
The child stared with wide, round eyes.
"Really? Really? Then you,"
After hesitating for two seconds, she leaned her small body forward slightly.
"Then you carry it, I'll carry it for you, Third Aunt, I'm very good with my mouth, I'm the best at tasting meat."
The more she talked, the more tempted she became, her eyes fixed on Jian Dan, afraid she might break her promise.
After we'd had our fill of laughter, and true to his word, the last dish left in the pot was braised pork ribs. He simply picked out a few pieces, and without bias, gave one piece to each child.
"Come on, help me taste it to see if it's cooked through, whether it's too salty or too bland?"
"Awoo!"
Xiao Qinheng happily took a bite, his eyes narrowing into slits.
Qin Shao, Qin Ming, and Qin Guan have all started school. Their parents usually tell them to give in to their younger brother, a simple and impartial rhyme that makes them happy. They all obediently wait to be fed.
Qin Jing was older now and more perceptive; the excuse of "just a taste" was clearly just to fool a child, and he felt quite embarrassed about it.
"Third Aunt, they can have a little something to satisfy their cravings, I don't need it, I'm all grown up now."
“Even when you’re grown up, you’re still children. To me, you’re all the same. Come on, open your mouths.”
After feeding them one by one and scooping the ribs out of the pot, the elderly couple from next door came over with two guards.
Qin Qinghuai and Cheng Chao returned shortly after, accompanied by Commander Lin and Qin Yi. They had just taken out a large sum of money; Commander Lin felt a pang of regret, but also a sense of satisfaction.
“Political Commissar, ever since you came, we brothers have had hope for the future. Let me tell you, I’m so happy I could wake up laughing in my dreams now.”
Qin Qinghuai was not polite at all.
"What are you saying? You're good at leading troops, but logistics, isn't that my job?"
To be honest, I didn't really contribute much to any of these things. There were only a few major events: hunting and donating grain. My wife did all of these. She was the one who first suggested them. The same goes for this machine. If my wife hadn't talked to it a bit, do you think any of us would have been able to come up with this idea?
