Sister Wang pointed to the back of their row of houses in the family compound. "They're breaking ground there now. The foundation's been dug, and half the walls are up. It looks like the houses will be finished soon."
"Are more people coming?"
Jian Dan glanced back as well; it wasn't a secret, so she didn't say anything more.
"Sister-in-law, someone is coming. Just wait and see, you'll find out in a few days."
"You're still keeping me in suspense,"
However, she didn't press the issue further. This was a military region, and she knew the basics of caution.
"By the way, I see your in-laws are here?"
"Ah, yes, my parents-in-law are both veteran revolutionaries. They've been through countless battles their whole lives, and even in their old age, they can't stay idle. Knowing that this place needs to be rebuilt from scratch, they wanted to contribute their remaining revolutionary energy, so they simply retired early and came over to lend a hand."
Sister-in-law Wang was filled with respect.
"As expected of an old revolutionary, his mindset is different from ours."
"You know what, with them here, none of those monsters and scoundrels dare to cause trouble."
Simplicity brings laughter.
"That's what I think too. Besides, I don't have any elders around me, so if something happens, we can discuss it."
Sister-in-law Wang's gaze drifted towards Jian Dan's belly, clearly indicating that she had already begun to speculate.
I simply made a bright red face.
"What are you thinking? No, I didn't,"
"Really not?"
Why do you seem so disappointed?
Sister-in-law Wang patted the wall, lowering her voice.
"You've been married for over half a year, and there's really no sign of a baby?"
She gestured and winked at the old lady.
Aren't your in-laws pressuring you?
He paused for a moment, then subconsciously shook his head.
"No, my in-laws are very open-minded."
She herself was a little worried. Logically speaking, after being married for so long, not to mention her in-laws, even her own parents should have asked her a few questions. A few days ago, when Tang Sumei came over, she even pretended to casually take her pulse, but the old lady really didn't mention it once, let alone urge her.
Before, in Beijing, it might have been because of the distance, but now that I've been here for so long, even though we don't eat together every day, we still see each other all the time, but we haven't mentioned each other at all. Why is that?
Are grandchildren not a big deal?
However, the old lady's affection for her was genuine.
Jian Dan had thought about the issue of having children, but since she was married, she didn't object and just let things take their natural course. She had no obsession with it and didn't bring it up specifically.
Qin Qinghuai thought his wife was too young to want anything yet, so he never brought it up. The couple tacitly skipped the topic, which was quite a wonderful misunderstanding.
However, the sudden mention of this topic really got her into a rut. When Qin Qinghuai returned, she was still frowning and struggling with her thoughts.
Qin Qinghuai looked around. She was alone in the house; there were no outsiders, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. She frowned, her expression serious—an expression she rarely wore—and couldn't help but find it strange.
"What's wrong? What happened?"
Jian Dan seemed a little lost in thought and a little aggrieved.
"Why do you think Mom has never asked us anything about the children?"
"ah?"
Even Qin Qinghuai, whose mind was full of convoluted thoughts, was stunned. After a couple of seconds of blank stare, he also lowered his gaze to Jian Dan's belly, his tone tinged with excitement.
"Wife, are you...are you pregnant?"
The expectation in her eyes was something Jian Dan had never seen before. She felt a pang of pity, but still shook her head.
"No, it wasn't like that. My wife asked me today, and it suddenly dawned on me that my parents haven't asked me about the children even once in all this time since we got married."
Qin Qinghuai didn't answer. Instead, he sat down and hugged the person, facing them.
"And what are your thoughts?"
It was so abrupt and disjointed that even Jian Dan didn't react in time.
"What?"
I said,
The man's gaze was fixed intently on her eyes, his eyes burning with a intensity that made her involuntarily flinch. He lowered his voice and softened his tone.
"I said, what are your thoughts on having a child? Or do you not want one?"
Qin Qinghuai wasn't obsessed, but for that brief moment, when he thought Jian Dan was pregnant, he felt a strange, indescribable feeling welling up inside him, a feeling that seemed about to explode, yet he suppressed it.
"I'm not saying I'm forcing you to have children. What I said before was my true thought. In my life, my partner is primarily you, and you are the first and foremost person before anyone else."
We've been avoiding the topic of having children. I want to know your thoughts so I can have a suitable reason with Mom and Dad. You always said you didn't like children, and I thought you didn't want any, so I told them I wasn't fully recovered and it would be a few years later. What do you think?
Simple surprise,
"When did I say I didn't want it anymore?"
Qin Qinghuai was even more surprised.
"Didn't you say you didn't like children?"
"I mean I don't like taking care of children. I'm afraid I don't know anything, I can't raise children well, and I won't be a mother."
They started off confident, but after a few words, they lost their nerve.
"I don't even dare to hold such a small child,"
Qin Qinghuai looked at the person in front of him, who was blushing slightly and whose eyes were darting away as he explained, and his heart pounded.
"So, you don't not want children, you're just afraid to?"
Hesitating briefly,
"I guess so. But I didn't say I didn't want it, and I didn't specifically use contraception,"
Qin Qinghuai felt as if a sky full of stars had bloomed in his heart, and he suddenly pulled the person into his arms, his chest shaking with laughter.
