"strawberry?
Did he actually grow it?
I found those strawberry seeds sometime ago, and I'm not even sure if they'll sprout.
He also wanted to plant blueberries, but my two vines hadn't fruited yet. He said he'd just wait until they did, and then new seedlings would sprout from under the vines, saving him the trouble of digging them up and taking them home.
Mingzhu pointed at her with her finger.
"I knew it. Who else would carry this stuff around here? It's useless for food or drink. I should have realized it sooner. There's no one else but you."
"Hehe! I don't really like anything. I just picked it up when I saw it. It doesn't take up much space anyway, and I wasn't really expecting it to come in handy someday."
"Look at my blueberry bushes, they've all blossomed, they'll bear fruit this year."
“I saw it a long time ago,”
Mingzhu is a frequent visitor here and is quite familiar with the area. She went over to take a look.
"Your flowers have already blossomed and set fruit, they're already the size of a fingernail,"
"Really? Then we won't be long before we can eat blueberries?"
It's simple and delightful, and the sense of accomplishment comes instantly.
"So, I guess I've unlocked another skill?"
Although her words sounded a bit awkward, Mingzhu admired her quite a bit.
"I really didn't realize you were so talented in this area. You're not afraid of farming at all, and the garden is the same; whatever you plant there will thrive."
This plant is only in its second year of cultivation. It will bear fruit in its second and third years.
"What's this? Now even the plants know to be selective about who they're planted with?"
"That's right, there must be a reason why I was chosen."
I don't know if I'll like them or not, but if they don't grow well, I'm sure I'll pluck them all and replant them.
Pearl, ...
The car left in the morning, and the train was in the afternoon. After purchasing more supplies, Qin Yi picked up the people and headed back, and it was already dark.
Not far from the county town, there was only a desolate wilderness with no one around. Several educated youths were crammed into the carriage, looking at the pitch blackness on both sides, shivering as they clutched their luggage. Qin Yi, who was driving, would occasionally slam on the brakes or suddenly accelerate. Looking at the few people in the carriage being tossed around, a strange smile appeared on his face.
Inside the driver's cab, the young soldiers relied on their quick reflexes and good physical fitness to maintain their balance and avoid being thrown against the window.
The group exchanged glances, observing Qin Yi's behavior—a mixture of venting anger and childishness. After enduring this for a while, someone finally mustered the courage to ask a question.
"Brother Yi, have these people offended you?"
"Um?"
After venting his anger by playing pranks, Qin Yi returned to his usual self.
"Oh, no, this is the first time we've met. I don't know them at all. What's wrong? Do you know them?"
"No, no, we don't know each other, Brother Yi. Then who were you just now?"
Qin Yi looked completely innocent as he glanced back through the rearview mirror.
"Just now? What happened just now?"
The young soldiers stared in disbelief, unsure of what to ask, but they didn't want to be subjected to any more unpredictable jolting.
"Brother Yi, you've been driving for so long, why don't you let us practice a bit while you take a break?"
Other courses at the military region were newly assigned, but driving had already been incorporated into daily training. Several young soldiers had already learned it and were quite skilled. Saying it was just practice was merely a way of being modest with Qin Yi. Qin Yi understood this; as Qin Qinghuai's man, it wasn't easy for him to become one of the soldiers, but he was always approachable and easy to get along with.
"Okay, then I'll take a break. You guys take turns driving for a while. When we get back, I'll treat you to meat."
After finding a place to park and changing locations, the young soldiers secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Qin Yi saw this and chuckled to himself. He glanced at the people in the carriage and was secretly pleased. He thought to himself, "This is a good way to vent my anger, isn't it?"
The group passed the torch to Qin Yi, but didn't dare give it to him again. By the time they returned to the camp, it was already past midnight. Even if Qin Yi disliked them, he couldn't really mistreat or ignore them on his own turf.
Fortunately, Zheng Aiguo was reliable. He tidied up the yard and gave instructions to the sentries, so Qin Yi and his men went straight there.
“We haven’t assigned any educated youth here before. You are the first batch. The military region attaches great importance to you. This courtyard is a newly set up educated youth settlement. As you can see, the houses and courtyard are all new. It was specially cleaned up today.”
The yard and house were spotless, leaving Qin Yi speechless with amazement; they had really put in a lot of effort.
"Your neighbors on both sides are all teachers at military schools, and the other families are mostly veterans as well. So as long as you don't go up the mountain casually, you are safe in terms of personal safety."
"Please arrange your own rooms. It's too late now, so please rest. We can talk about it tomorrow."
There were only four people in total, two men and two women. Being newcomers, they weren't likely to do anything significant, so Qin Yi didn't say much, only giving them some instructions.
"This is a military area, and many places are restricted areas. You can't move around freely. Since you're not familiar with the area, you should rest first. You can also get to know your neighbors tomorrow. I'll come over tomorrow to explain other things to you."
He turned and left.
"Comrade, comrade,"
Qin Yi frowned.
"Is there anything else?"
The speaker was a timid girl, her eyes seemingly filled with tears, clutching her stomach and forcing a bitter smile.
"Comrade, we haven't eaten anything since we got off the bus, and we've run out of water. Could you please give us something, food or drink? We'll treat it as a loan, and we'll pay you back."
The other three people wore almost the same wry smiles and awkward expressions. Qin Yi was annoyed, but he really couldn't just walk away.
"You guys go deliver the car, then see if the cafeteria has anything and get some for them,"
The young soldier glanced at it, agreed, and trotted out. A moment later, he returned, one carrying a thermos and the other a plate of cornbread.
"Brother Yi, that's all we have. The thermos is from the canteen; we can return it tomorrow. This cornbread is for the sentries."
The educated youth were really hungry and thirsty, so they practically snatched the food and started biting into it, then unsurprisingly choked as they stretched their necks to swallow.
Then, in a flurry, he frantically rummaged through his water cup and teacup, pouring water.
Qin Yi and the others quietly withdrew.
"Brother Yi, aren't they from the city? They seem even less capable than us."
Qin Yi sighed.
"People in the city also need to eat and wear clothes. How many of those who are sent to this poor, remote rural area by their families are truly valued?"
"That's true. When they got off the bus, you said they could go eat and buy things first, but none of them went."
"Alright, forget about them. Let's go back to the dorm. Once we're done with these last couple of days, I'll treat you guys to some meat."
"Brother Yi is a true righteous man!"
"But if the sentries' rations are all given to them, what will they eat?"
Qin Yi put his arm around the shoulder of the person next to him.
Why are you so worried? Didn't we buy steamed buns?
"Wasn't that for my sister-in-law?"
"That was prepared in advance by the political commissar..."
