“Those children, last year they had a happy family with both parents, but this year they almost became orphans. Old Qin, it breaks my heart!”
Qin Qinghuai offered silent comfort, while also having some vague ideas in his mind and starting to make plans.
The place Qin Yi was going to wasn't particularly far, a village in the next county called Lizhuang. The man Liu Yulan was nicknamed Da Xiaozi.
Qin Yi was quick-witted and talkative. Along the way, he went through almost every ancestor of the Li family, and he also learned a lot about the situation in Lizhuang. He had a general idea of what was going on. When he arrived at the commune, he didn't stop at all and went straight to Lizhuang, which was a rather remote village.
The four-wheeled vehicle was indeed conspicuous. As soon as it entered the village, it was surrounded by villagers who followed it almost all the way to a secluded and obviously simpler courtyard, where it stopped at the entrance.
Qin Yi could clearly see that most of the villagers following behind were just there to watch the excitement. There were some who were genuinely concerned and worried, but not many. However, this was only human nature, as long as there was no malice.
As soon as I got out of the car, several people hurried out of the courtyard to greet me. Two men led the way, followed by two nimble women. They glanced at the car, then their gaze settled on the elderly woman holding the child, and they even quickened their pace a few steps.
"Mom, did you bring the baby back?"
"Come in quickly, come in quickly. Sister-in-law, go and take the child from me. I'll go add some fuel to the fire."
As they spoke, the people behind turned back, and the woman in front agreed, skillfully taking the child from the old lady and helping her inside with her other hand.
"Mom, are you tired? Are you cold? Hurry up and come inside to warm up. I reckon you'll be back soon, the kang (heated brick bed) is already heated."
The two men in front also craned their necks to glance at the swaddled baby, then looked into the car again.
"Dad, is this... just the child? My sister-in-law really doesn't want the child anymore?"
The old man's big eyes widened.
"Alright, enough of that nonsense. Come inside. This is Comrade Qin, who brought us back. Comrade Qin, come inside and warm up."
Qin Yi originally wanted to see what the house was like, so he followed along and naturally glanced around the yard.
My first impression was that it was clean.
You can hear the crowing of chickens right outside the door, but there's not a trace of chicken droppings in the yard; even the dust and weeds are kept very clean.
Then, I heard a series of footprints behind me, "tap tap tap," and a bunch of children's voices.
"Are my grandpa and grandma back?"
"Little sister, has she been brought back?"
"Hmph! Get out of here! You're not allowed to come to my house anymore! I want a little sister too!"
Qin Yi's lips curled up slightly.
"Uncle, are these all your grandsons?"
