Chang Le walked stiffly over, sat down in the same spot she had sat in before, and silently looked at him.
Lu Yanhuai smiled, but couldn't say anything.
He could crack jokes to lighten the mood when facing Lu Jin'an and the rest of the Wolf Faction, but he couldn't utter a single lighthearted word when facing Chang Le.
Worried, relieved, comforted, encouraging, supportive, warm, apologetic, heartbroken… a thousand words churned in my mind countless times, but in the end, they were all swallowed back, leaving only one sentence:
"It's okay, I was able to see you at the end, so I have no regrets."
Chang Le's body trembled, but she couldn't make any expression, including sadness.
Lu Yanhuai felt heartbroken, but he didn't show his sadness. He still smiled and said, "Even now, I am incredibly grateful that I met you back then and became your friend and family."
"Lele, my time has come, but there's no need to be sad. I'm happy, and I have no regrets. The only thing I can't let go of is that I want you to be happy, and I hope you have no regrets."
Lu Yanhuai had to take several breaths to say a single sentence, but he tried his best to keep his voice from trembling at all.
"Lele, take good care of yourself."
He said this solemnly.
Chang Le felt a huge cavity in her heart, riddled with holes and leaking air. The cold wind scraped her lungs and caused excruciating pain, making her as stiff as ice. Her sorrow was overwhelming, but she couldn't cry.
So she took his cold hand in hers, slowly and gently tilted her head, resting her cheek on the back of his hand, snuggling close in lingering affection.
A hint of pity flashed in Lu Yanhuai's eyes as he raised his hand and hovered it above her head.
After hesitating for a long time, I finally decided not to make a decision.
The following evening, Lu Yanhuai sat by the window for a while, then went to bed and fell asleep without opening his eyes again.
It snowed that day.
This winter is very cold.
...
In November, the previous Wolf Lord Lu Yanhuai was buried, and Lu Jin'an, despite his grief, personally handled his funeral arrangements.
Chang Le followed the coffin the whole way, but never shed a tear. She simply followed the coffin silently, going wherever it went.
After the funeral, the Wolf Faction and the Dragon Faction agreed to bury Lu Yanhuai's body in the Dragon Tomb.
Chang Le and Lu Jin'an carried the coffin into the Dragon Tomb.
Chang Le kept his promise and preserved Lu Yanhuai's lingering soul.
Lu Yanhuai was quite surprised to see the two of them again in his divine form, but he immediately understood. He didn't scold or express his dissatisfaction, but just sighed helplessly, "You two silly children!"
Lu Jin'an had no ability to communicate with the soul and couldn't hear its voice, so he turned to ask Chang Le.
Chang Le replied simply, "He said you're stupid."
Lu Jin'an chuckled, then burst into laughter, and then started crying, sobbing uncontrollably. She turned her back to the two of them, unable to face them.
Chang Le watched him cry in silence, then watched Lu Yanhuai in silence.
Lu Yanhuai looked at her with heartache and suddenly said, "I left a letter for you. It's in the drawer in the room. Go and take a look. I need to adjust first."
Chang Le nodded, and Lu Yanhuai's figure disappeared.
Upon hearing that a letter had been left, Lu Jin'an couldn't wait to go back with Chang Le and found the two letters.
Chang Le did not open the letter immediately, nor did she disturb the sobbing Lu Jin'an. She returned to the Dragon Tomb with the letter.
She didn't wake Lu Yanhuai again, but walked to his tombstone, sat down, and opened the letter on her lap.
...
"Dear Lele:
hello.
The stars and moon are bright and clear tonight, so it shouldn't be too sad to say goodbye. After meeting during the day, I've thought it over and decided to give a proper farewell.
Normally, I can talk a good game about anything and anyone, but now, with so much to say, I don't know where to begin.
Thinking back, I've already said a lot, so let me talk about what I haven't said yet.
Do you remember the first time we met?
"Young Master Chang Le, you will be staying in the Gray Zone for the next one to three months."
"Don't laugh like a bad uncle."
"Uncle Lu can't always glare at you like that, that's too impolite."
"At that time, you were far less important to me than the part of the business that Fu Guang gave up. And seeing your attachment to him, I only saw a sad ending that was almost inevitable, but I felt no pity for you and did not want to stop it."
To me, you're like a moth drawn to a flame. Even if I discover you're a pitiful little thing, I'll just coldly think, what's it to me?
But I regretted it.
After spending two months together, I promptly proved myself wrong. I had developed an interest in you and feelings for you.
Have you ever seen a small moon amidst mountains of corpses and seas of blood? That's the feeling you gave me back then.
The secrets you possess are a treasure, but the pure heart you have never lost despite the filth and corruption of the world is an even greater treasure.
I once resorted to any means necessary, and compared to you, I suddenly feel ashamed. So, I began to try to get closer to you, help you, and look forward to your growth.
"Old Lu, you've lulled me to sleep again."
"That was just a lullaby. Don't slander my singing ability; I won't take the blame for that."
"You heartless wretch, when have you ever sung for anyone other than yourself?"
"But what I regret most is that I couldn't give you a definite answer back then, or rather, it seems that I really couldn't give you a response."
—"Lu Yanhuai".
--"Um?"
"If we're all going to die, I want to go before you. I don't want to be left there alone."
"Brother Lu, you can't die before me again. Let's call it a deal."
"Silly girl, how can I, with my crippled and filthy body, accompany you through the long years? I want to, but I really can't. I'm so sorry."
