Hua Changle thought of the girl who had left, raised his chin, swallowed the tears welling up in his eyes, and said softly:
"Death is not a bad thing."
The boy let out a "ha," as if exhaling his last breath.
The boy, aged twelve or thirteen, spoke with maturity, yet exuded an aura of death.
Hua Changle paused for a moment, then turned and left.
She stood frozen outside the door for three seconds, then suddenly took a step and strode quickly toward the terrifying room at the other end of the corridor.
She knocked on the door and said to the person who opened it, "I'm looking for Lord Igor!"
Before long, Igor emerged carrying a saw, the blade still clinging to bits of meat, and he carried with him the chill that had been kept inside to preserve the meat.
Is there anything I can help you with?
Hua Changle remained calm and briefly recounted what had just happened to him, explaining that she needed to ascertain the situation regarding the "raw materials."
Igor rubbed his relatively clean arm against his forehead and said decisively, "I'll let you know when I have news."
"Thank you, sir." Hua Changle bowed slightly, his attitude respectful.
Igor was quite pleased: "No need, just call me by my name, I like my name! Go back to work!"
Hua Changle turned and left, her faint smile instantly turning into icy fury.
She composed herself before picking up the list again.
She thought to herself that she should be glad Igor was a "brute force but simple mind" guy, otherwise someone else would have suspected her motives.
She re-entered the original room 1 and was startled—
The boy was lying in the cage!
She stepped forward, lifted the restraints, opened the cage, checked the boy's breathing, and breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that he had only fainted.
She thought for a moment, then picked the person up and locked the door again.
The boy must have fainted from excessive grief and weakness.
Hua Changle fed him a few sips of water and then flicked a few drops onto his face.
The boy slowly woke up, opened his eyes and was stunned for a moment, then was startled, before calming down with a bit of vigilance.
The two remained silent for about ten seconds.
How old are you?
She suddenly spoke up and asked a question.
The boy remained silent for a moment, showing no desire to chat.
After all, he had been here for so long that he had long since grown accustomed to silence. His outburst just now had exhausted all his strength.
But the same question was repeated.
The boy spoke: "...Fourteen."
She looks older than her thin appearance suggests.
How long have you been here?
The boy hesitated for a moment, but continued to answer: "...three years."
Hua Changle was surprised: "You have a good mental fortitude."
The boy gave a sneer: "I've been crazy for a long time."
"Studied medicine?"
The boy's eyes dimmed: "My parents are doctors."
"Very professional."
"We can't save them..."
The conversation suddenly became difficult to continue.
"Can you hold on?" Hua Changle suddenly asked softly.
The boy stared blankly at the ceiling: "Who knows?"
Isn't this world inherently characterized by the impermanence of life and death?
Hua Changle controlled her breathing and silently let out a sigh of relief: "Just hang in there, there's still a long road ahead."
The boy did not answer.
Hua Changle didn't say anything more, but leaned down to look at him: "If you're not going to die, go back."
The boy slowly got up, propped up his weak body, and walked back to the cage by himself.
Hua Changle looked at him for a while, then suddenly asked, "Number 09, what's your name?"
The boy hesitated for a moment before answering her question: "Fu Guang."
Hua Changle was momentarily dazed before regaining her senses: "The name... is very good."
She turned around calmly, took the equipment, then drew blood from a boy, and left room 1.
Once outside, her fingers trembled as she held the vacuum tube, but she dared not deform it.
It was as if she tried her best to spare even one life inside, but dared not and could not plead for them.
There are so many people waiting and hoping behind her; she is not a solitary madwoman.
Nothing unexpected happened in the afternoon, but Igor told her some terrible news—the girl number 16 didn't survive the third surgery.
Igor could tell she was soft-hearted, so he kindly gave her the only keepsake the girl had left behind.
—A bloodstained, intact fingernail.
Hua Changle didn't ask what would happen to the girl afterward, because she might not be able to bear the thought of leaving only one nail.
When she went to Room 1, she casually slipped the nail clipper to Fu Guang.
A few seconds after being stuffed in, Fu Guang's face suddenly turned pale and his eyes reddened.
A moment later, he lay down in a corner of the cage and wept silently.
Hua Changle remained silent for a long time before turning and leaving.
Maybe……
The world on earth is the real prison.
Nothing unexpected happened after that. This time, Hua Changle calmly and resolutely ate her fill.
But when she couldn't fall asleep for a long time that night, 422 suddenly asked: "Do you regret it?"
She simply replied with one word: 【No】
The exhaustion in her heart forced her to fall asleep.
The thin blanket trembled slightly, and 422 sighed softly:
I hope you'll never regret it.
Goodnight, my... princess.
——
The next day, Hua Changle composed himself and waited outside Kazmir's door early in the morning.
Kazmir came out dressed in a very youthful style, wearing a T-shirt, sweatpants, and a baseball cap, like a mannequin in a men's clothing store.
He frowned when he saw Hua Changle: "What's with this outfit?"
Hua Changle looked down at her clean and tidy little shirt, trousers, and boots. There was nothing wrong with them!
