The pet section on the 4th floor.
Ran Mouri rushed up the stairs to this spot and hurried inside with Officer Sato and Conan. However, a quick glance revealed only rows of neat counters—no Sonoko Suzuki, no security guards, and no shards of rock from the broken aquarium.
"Sonoko?" Ran Mouri called out anxiously, "Are you there? Sonoko!!"
Conan ran to the aquatic animal section, looked at the undamaged fish tanks, and his heart sank: "They're not broken..."
Could he have made a mistake? The sound of scattering gravel he heard in the stairwell wasn't from the aquarium stones, but something else entirely, like... the Go set in the stationery section on the 8th floor?!
"Quick!" Conan shouted to the bewildered Ran Mouri and Miwako Sato, "Get to the 8th floor!"
...
The stationery section on the 8th floor.
Inspector Megure performed exceptionally well, managing to guess the correct location before Conan could.
He strode into the floor and shone his flashlight in the direction the sound came from. Seeing what was inside the beam of light, the officer nearly had a heart attack.
—Beside the Go board counter, Sonoko Suzuki collapsed to the ground, utterly exhausted. Before her, the murderer raised a long stick high, about to bring it down with tremendous force.
Without time to say more, Inspector Megure pushed off the ground with a burst of energy he hadn't felt in a long time, and charged forward. Just as the killer swung his baton down, he actually blocked it with a speed he himself could hardly believe.
With a muffled thud, blood flowed down from under the brim of the hat.
Ding Jin Fangxiong stared blankly at the policeman who had appeared out of nowhere.
Inspector Megure steadied his swaying body and coldly stared at the murderer before him. He was about to speak when he suddenly paused, glancing behind Yoshio Sadakin.
—How could such a dense shadow be cast behind the murderer?
There was clearly no wall at that spot, and the only light source was the flashlight lying at my feet. The light shone from this angle... The position of that shadow doesn't seem quite physics-dependent.
Inspector Megure rubbed his eyes blankly, wiped away the blood, and looked at the wound again.
However you look at it, there is indeed a dark figure behind the murderer, as thick as a physical shadow, wielding a baton.
Before the science-believing policeman could figure out what was going on, his shadow moved before the murderer could swing the long stick down again.
—The shadow and the body moved out of sync; the shadow swung the stick down faster than the body itself.
With a long, echoing bang, Ding Jin Fangxiong rolled his eyes and fell to the ground, leaving only a dashing black shadow standing there.
The dark figure swung its baton with incredible agility, like a dagger, creating a stark contrast with the murderer lying sprawled at its feet.
Mumu Police Department: "..."
Mumu Police Department: "???"
He briefly wondered if he was dreaming. But the next instant, Inspector Megure saw the dark figure effortlessly lift his leg, firmly pinning down Yoshio Sadakin, who was struggling to get up, and then swing his baton down with it.
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
The familiar rhythm, the familiar tone, the familiar movements.
Certain memories etched into his DNA were suddenly awakened, and Inspector Megure blurted out, "Brother Jiang Xia?!"
Jiang Xia, dressed in all black, paused for a moment, and the floor fell silent again.
But two seconds later, the banging sound started again, and it became subtly more urgent than before.
Inspector Megure's eye twitched as he finally understood: What shadow? This was none other than his brother Jiang Xia dressed in all black!
Sonoko Suzuki was stunned. She had just fallen to the ground, her entire field of vision filled with Yoshio Sadakin's ferocious face. She thought she was going to lose her life here today, but who knew that just as she was about to be beaten to death, with a bang, Yoshio Sadakin's face fell down, and what was revealed again was a pleasing face that symbolized safety.
“…Jiang Xia!! And the police inspector!”
After a brief silence, Sonoko Suzuki let out a scream and rushed over, hugging her classmate's leg and wailing, "I almost died, I almost died! That stick was only this close to me! Waaaaaah..."
Vermouth, a dozen meters away: "..."
She sat in the shadows of the counter, disturbed by the series of cries, her temples throbbing with veins.
At the same time, as an actress skilled at capturing emotions and details, she clearly heard the lingering fear in Sonoko Suzuki's voice—this kind of terror at the moment of life and death is not something a clueless high school girl could portray.
"Uzo was following me the whole time, while that security guard was chasing Sonoko Suzuki. She had no protection and was really just one step away from death—if he had missed a single blow, the person lying here now would be a fresh corpse."
“Uso’s usual attitude towards her is no different from how he treats Angel and Cool Guy, but now…”
A classmate who seemed so important actually brushed with death so easily.
Vermouth had always thought that Uzo might have some conscience, just like she, a creature of darkness, had seen those two beams of light, but...
Does Uzota really have a conscience?
Even though the danger had passed, Vermouth's heart was beating faster and faster, showing no signs of calming down.
...
Sonoko Suzuki, halfway through her crying, suddenly remembered something. Wiping away her tears, she looked at Inspector Megure, sobbing, "Inspector, are you alright? I... I'll call an ambulance for you. I can get an ambulance very quickly."
"Okay." Inspector Megure didn't force himself. After nodding, he rubbed his slightly dizzy head and looked at the murderer who was being evenly beaten by Jiang Xia.
"..." It took Inspector Megure two seconds to consider whether the murderer still had the energy to listen to people, but in the end, he couldn't help but speak out.
He looked coldly at the person on the ground: "I understand that you want to use this iron bar to punish those who drive recklessly. But do you know? The girl you attacked hasn't even graduated from high school yet—she's not a driver at all, just an innocent student who went to put something in the car."
The killer, who was screaming in agony, paused for a moment and instinctively retorted, "No, impossible..."
Inspector Megure snorted coldly: "You don't even understand this most basic thing—your actions are not about 'upholding justice' at all, nor are they about avenging your dead son. You're just taking your anger out on others."
"You are not a righteous avenger at all; you are just a tyrannical criminal who manipulates human lives and indulges in venting his anger!"
Vermouth found this extremely strange—the case ended with a bit of Uzo mocking him about himself? ...Truly, that's him.
