Chapter 38 Why are all the gentlemen at the mine bald?
Chapter Thirty-Eight
Xu Xunyuan was so startled she almost screamed. The magic barrier nearly collapsed, but luckily she turned around and saw a familiar face, thus avoiding being exposed in the enemy's stronghold.
"Bishop D, what are you doing here?"
"Your traits are quite interesting."
Du Yu squatted behind Xu Xunyuan and curiously touched the semi-transparent light screen above his head. "It can even block out sound."
"The sound is too loud."
Xu Xunyuan patted his chest and gave Du Yu a brief explanation of his special trait: "Three-Handed Magician".
A practical ability that not only allows one to make a living by performing magic on the street when unemployed, but also to use magic tricks to transform the fake into the real and deceive the senses of enemies.
"My mental strength level is too low; I can only perform some minor magic tricks at the moment."
Xu Xunyuan chuckled awkwardly at Du Yu's praise and added sheepishly, "Besides, the profession of magician is almost extinct now."
"Why?"
"Because magic is about knowing it's fake, but not being able to figure out how it's faked; that's what makes it interesting. Once magic becomes real, it loses its appeal. Nowadays, audiences prefer to see a living person dismembered rather than make them disappear."
Xu Xunyuan gave a wry smile and shook his head, "As for superpowers... if given a choice, who would choose a useless support ability instead of an offensive one?"
"A special trait is the deepest desire in a person's heart. If you really think that way, you won't awaken this ability... Don't come out."
Xu Xunyuan was taken aback. Du Yu suddenly stood up and walked out from the corner of the wall. A patrol of bald men was walking out of the door!
Xu Xunyuan was startled and instinctively grabbed her, but his hand slipped from his grasp. He was about to get up in a hurry when he heard the last three words of her sentence and paused. In that moment of hesitation, the patrol team had already spotted Du Yu!
Anyone who dares to go out like this must be quite strong in combat... I hate teammates who like to act recklessly.
Xu Xunyuan suppressed the anger rising within her. Under her tense gaze, the group of bald men looked at Du Yu with surprise, blocked her way, and scanned her up and down with suspicious eyes. Several bald men in the back row even raised their guns, and then—
Did that crazy bishop D scold me?
Xu Xunyuan's breath hitched. Those who believed in evil gods were not quite right in the head, so she was not surprised at all that the other party could do such a thing, but this was the enemy's headquarters!
What if a high-level superpowered individual shows up and sees through her disguise when a fight breaks out? She's not some fearless madwoman!
However, when she was so nervous that she stopped breathing, the bald man who had been scolded showed anger on his face, and the veins on his forehead were bulging and exposed without being covered by hair, but he forcibly held back.
Xu Xunyuan always habitually opened his half-closed eyes as wide as possible, his eyes filled with question marks.
Although the Bald Guys call themselves "gentlemen" and dress in a pretentious manner, you can tell from their fighting style that they have bad tempers.
In the large-scale brawls that have broken out in the lower city, they were involved in four out of every five. Now that bald guy has been insulted so harshly, he's actually putting up with it?
Xu Xunyuan stared at Du Yu's retreating figure, puzzled. Compared to her sudden arrival last night, she was dressed a little more decently today, but only a little.
A shirt that looked wrinkled from the back, the hem tucked carelessly into work pants. A pair of worn-out Doc Martens boots, with dark red splattered on the surface, as if they had just stepped on something.
Du Yu seemed oblivious to the barely suppressed anger on the bald man's face, and curled his lip, "Is this how you do things? I'm already here, and not a single person is there to meet me? Don't you know how dangerous it is in the gray fog?"
One of the bald men couldn't help but retort, "We've already sent out three groups of people to pick you up. How are we supposed to know how you got in? Aren't company dogs like you the ones who love to spy the most?"
"Are you saying I'm wrong? Is this how your Gentlemen's Club cooperates?"
"alright!"
The bald team leader stopped his subordinate but didn't reprimand him. He looked Du Yu up and down; the muscles in his eyebrows twitched, a comical yet slightly eerie gesture.
"Stop arguing, come with me! Boss Long has been waiting for you for a long time! Even if you were sent by Lan Ge, I advise you to be a coward, or the company won't be able to protect you!"
The bald man, who had no eyebrows, turned and led the way, his last words carrying a hint of threat amidst his anger. Logically, even a powerful dragon can't suppress a local snake, but unfortunately, the man before him was no ordinary person.
Du Yu sneered, "The company sent me to this godforsaken place without even thinking of protecting me!"
Those who can participate in highly confidential company missions are either trusted confidants cultivated by the big bosses and small bosses since childhood, who have been brainwashed multiple times to keep the secrets to themselves; or they are cannon fodder who can be discarded at the last minute, since in a sense, the dead are more trustworthy than confidants.
When Lange Company sent Dong Shiwu here, they weren't prepared for her to come back alive.
Despite this, people tend to deceive themselves, and no one could say it as confidently as Du Yu. The anger in the bald leader's eyes faltered, and he finally understood the origin of the other party's attitude.
Forget it, no need for a normal person to provoke a dying madman.
With one hand in his pocket and the other carrying a company-issued safe, Du Yu stopped in front of a three-story building after passing through several security checkpoints. The building had a very tight security system, and although it had been disguised, traces of artillery bombing were still visible.
"Hold on."
The bald team leader gestured to his subordinates to continue patrolling, while he tapped the access control on the building gate a few times, seemingly waiting for someone to reply.
Du Yu lifted the safe to his side, his ears twitched as if he had heard something, and he squinted at the large building in the distance that had suddenly started to emit black smoke: "What's that?"
"There?"
The bald man seemed to remember something, his burly body trembled, and he quickly looked away as if afraid of disturbing something. The automatic door in front of the building opened at the right time, and he led Du Yu inside, his voice low and indistinct: "You'll have to go see it sooner or later, it's a mine."
That mine that appeared out of nowhere?
Du Yu went over the name in his mind, and then, following the bald man in the suit, he met a bald man in a suit on the screen in the first-floor reception room.
The background on the other side of the screen seemed to be in some distant laboratory, with pipes and instruments frequently visible. A bald man in a wheelchair finished his work, looked up at the other side, and Du Yu's voice was captivating:
"Do you gentlemen's association have some strange traditions? It's one thing to have uniform clothing, but why do you even have to have uniform hairstyles?"
Although she had decided not to fully cooperate when Lan Ge accepted the mission, she asked the question not entirely out of mischief, but because she was genuinely curious.
She wanted to ask when she first saw Hu Tiankui chasing Xu Xunyuan and the others, after all, the rows of shiny bald heads were really eye-catching!
"What nonsense are you talking about?!"
The bald man beside him glared angrily, but the bald man on the screen waved his hand, his expression more interested than offended: "You're not the first person to be curious, but you're the first person to dare to ask me this in front of me."
Hu Tianlong smiled wryly, but showed no intention of explaining anything to Du Yu. His gaze shifted downwards, landing on the safe Du Yu was carrying:
“Although you were sent by Lange, just to be on the safe side, we still need to check. Ah Wu, don’t let this young lady do it herself.”
Du Yu glanced at the time, calculated the key according to the formula, unlocked the safe on the table, shrugged, and took a step back.
The safe wasn't large, containing only a strange device resembling a vacuum cleaner. The front had a flat opening leading to a hemispherical container via several curved pipes. Embedded in the center of that container was a glass disc with numbers engraved around its circumference, but instead of a pointer, there was a stationary balance scale at its center.
The bald man called A-Wu stepped forward, carefully took out the instrument, and handed it to the screen, his gaze as if afraid of being burned by the heat of the instrument's balance scale.
Hu Tianlong stared intently at the still scales. After a long while, seeing that the scales did not move at all, he let out a sigh.
Du Yu drew a fan-shaped diagram for him, a sigh that contained three parts regret, three parts relief, and four parts longing for something he couldn't have.
Hu Tianlong shifted his gaze to the instrument, carefully examining it from top to bottom several times. A person in a white coat whispered something in his ear, and he nodded.
"The equipment is fine. They're really pushing this on us. Take this lady to the mine first, transport the 'ore,' and then we can arrange other things."
A-Wu nodded, waiting for the light screen to go out before leading Du Yu out of the small building. Before leaving, Du Yu slightly raised her head, her gaze inadvertently glancing at the steps leading to the second floor. Her intuition told her that something dangerous was hidden there…
"Don't stop me! I can keep digging! Let me in!"
After leaving the small building, A-Wu led Du Yu around several times until they arrived at the strange building from which black smoke had just begun to rise.
The building, made of some unknown material, was coated with a gleaming silver metallic layer. It resembled the Colosseum of ancient Rome from a previous life, and in the ever-flowing gray fog, it looked like a giant mouth facing the sky.
A-Wu also saw the commotion in front of the mine. His brows furrowed as he looked at the bald gatekeeper and asked, "What's going on?"
