Chapter 8 Make something delicious

When the town mayor announced this decision, the village was thrown into chaos. Even the village elders said that in all their years, they had never heard of a village mayor being dismissed.

Village Chief Xu never expected it to cause such serious consequences, and he hurriedly pleaded with the town mayor for leniency.

The town mayor completely ignored him, preoccupied with talking to Constable Zhu. As soon as Constable Zhu left, Xiao Wan hurriedly went to find a doctor from another village. He Tong, having been beaten, quickly developed a fever.

Wan Hai initially didn't take the wound from the weapon seriously, but the blood kept flowing. This six-foot-tall man couldn't withstand it; he experienced waves of dizziness, and the He family cried out in despair.

He Zifeng carried his son and led his wife back to the dilapidated house. He tenderly placed his son on the bed, wanting to check his injuries. The child's skin was delicate, and there were red marks on his arms after being pinched by Xiao Wanshi.

Seeing his father both angry and heartbroken, Xiao Heran tried to comfort him, saying, "I'm not in pain!"

Qiu Yu's tears fell, and as soon as she reached out, Xiao He Ran was in her arms: "Silly child."

Xiao Heran had external injuries all over his body, so he was told to stay in bed for a while.

He Zifeng said, "We've separated our families, so they'll never bully you again."

Xiao Heran nodded heavily: "Yes."

Qiu Yu patted the child's head, and the little guy nestled affectionately in his arms, saying somewhat shyly, "Daddy, can you sleep with me for a while?" After saying that, he buried his face in the blanket, feeling embarrassed.

Xiao Heran has been very sensible since he was a child. Sometimes when he sees other children snuggling in their parents' arms, he is very envious. Yesterday, both of his fathers were lying next to him, and he was so happy that he wanted to do the same.

Qiu Yu said, "Okay." Then she lay down on the bed with her son in her arms.

He was trying to fulfill the little guy's wish, but the little guy wouldn't behave and kept moving around in his arms. Anyone could see how happy the little rascal was.

He Zifeng breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that his son had regained his energy so quickly.

He was somewhat looking forward to the new life that was about to begin.

First, the house needs some repairs; it's been uninhabited for too long. There's also a huge hole in the roof that needs to be fixed. To be precise, there are quite a few places that need repairs.

He Zifeng went to get some wood and started sawing it into pieces in the yard.

It was still broad daylight, and Xiao Heran couldn't sleep at all. He just played with Qiu Yu on the bed for a while. This was a feeling he had never experienced before since he was born, and he was also curious and wanted to go out and help his father.

Qiu Yu seemed to have read his thoughts and said, "Let's go, shall we go out and take a look?"

When Xiao Heran realized that his father had seen through his thoughts, he felt embarrassed and snuggled into his arms, even secretly kissing Qiu Yu's cheek.

Qiu Yu looked down at her son, and the little guy smiled and hid under the covers.

Qiu Yu said, "Alright." Her son's tantrums were truly irresistible.

Then I lifted the blanket, and my son rushed over excitedly, his eyes sparkling. He seemed to really enjoy this hide-and-seek game under the covers, and then hid his little head again.

Qiu Yu lifted the blanket.

This game is fun, but after only three or four rounds, the child's forehead was already covered in fine beads of sweat.

Qiu Yu took her son out, and the little guy struggled a few times before saying in a childish voice, "I'm all grown up now, I can walk by myself."

Qiu Yu said, "Be good, let me hold you for a while."

Xiao Heran wrapped his arms around Qiu Yu's neck.

Qiu Yu carried Xiao He Ran outside and saw that He Zifeng had already cut out quite a few planks. He was going to use them to repair the roof.

Xiao Heran looked excited and said, "We'll live here from now on?"

"Hmm." He Zifeng felt a little guilty towards his wife and child for making them live in such a dilapidated place.

Xiao Heran was very excited and happily pulled Qiu Yu to walk around the outside of the house. Although the place was dilapidated, the yard was big, and they could put some things there in the future.

He Zifeng gave Qiu Yu ten taels of silver. It seemed like a lot of money, but they had no other way to make money and would eventually run out of it. Although they had separated from the He family, the He family still had money, houses, businesses, and land, while they had nothing left except these ten taels.

He Zifeng needs to come up with a way to make money!

However, he was in a good mood today and said to Qiuyu, "I'll watch the child. You go and buy some meat. We'll cook something nice today."

Qiu Yu thought about it and realized it made sense, then went out.

He Zifeng borrowed a ladder to climb onto the roof and finally patched up a huge hole in the roof, and then repaired other parts of the house.

This house has been uninhabited for many years, and it gets covered in dust with the slightest movement.

Little He Ran is only four years old this year, which is the age when he's very clingy. He follows He Zifeng around no matter what he's doing, and soon the little guy's face turns black. He looks like a little kitten, but he doesn't know that every time He Zifeng looks over, the little guy flashes a big smile.

After a long while, Qiuyu returned, carrying over a pound of pork, half a palm-sized piece of which was all lean meat. Qiuyu was still a little annoyed: "You can't buy fatty meat at this time of year." These days, everyone is short of oil and fat; people are thin and pigs are thin too. Fatty meat is in high demand. If you buy a piece at the market, you can get half a jar of lard. Adding a little lard to anything makes it fragrant.

In contrast, lean meat, if not cooked properly, can become dry and is therefore unpopular.

At this time, two of Qiu Yu's close female relatives came over together: Sister Liu and Sister Shen. They brought some wild vegetables, potatoes, half a bag of millet, and four ounces of brown sugar. They also brought a large cabbage to warm the room.

This is a common saying when people move in.

"Why are you being so polite, sister-in-law? Take these back with you, I appreciate the thought." We're all people who toil in the fields, making money is hard. Wild vegetables aside, millet and brown sugar are rare items, costing at least ten coins each.

"Hey, it's nothing, just live your lives well," said Sister Liu.

Sister-in-law Shen said, "I really didn't know you lived like that at home. That old scoundrel was no human being." Then she added, "Now that Liu Zi has become the village chief, the village is going to be very lively." Liu Zi used to be in charge of some things and had some prestige in the village, but Village Chief Xu looked down on him and made things difficult for him a lot. Now the tables have turned, and Village Chief Xu is in for a rough time.

Qiu Yu said, "We live in a remote area, so please let us know if there is any news."

"Okay." Seeing that they still had work to do, knowing that there would be a lot to do after moving, Qiu Yu didn't keep them chatting and said, "We'll come again another day." After seeing them off, Qiu Yu turned around and saw that the father and son looked like cats covered in grime, and couldn't help but chuckle: "Go take a bath in the river, I'll make you pork and cabbage dumplings later." He planned to buy two more pounds of flour to celebrate properly.

Xiao Heran's mouth watered at the thought, as dumplings were only eaten during the Lunar New Year. Moreover, his uncle's dumplings were the best he'd ever had. He circled around excitedly, exclaiming, "That's wonderful!"

Then, with a sudden movement, He Zifeng picked up Xiao Heran and said, "Let's take a bath."

Xiao He Ran wasn't afraid at all and kept laughing.
