Chapter 50 Xia Fanxing and Xie Jingchen have a little secret
The protagonist, Xie Jingchen, was standing next to their table at some point, and it was unclear how much he had overheard.
He held a plate in his hand, his face expressionless, but there seemed to be a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"Report, Commander!" Ma Nanzheng jumped up, so nervous he almost spilled the soup in front of him. "I, I just..."
"Are you introducing the regimental headquarters to Comrade Xia?" Xie Jingchen interjected.
He was clearly trying to help Ma Nanzheng out of a predicament, but instead made Ma Nanzheng so embarrassed that he wanted to kill himself.
Who would understand? He had never talked about the leader behind his back, but he never expected that the leader himself would catch him joking with Xia Fanxing for the first time!
The old saying is true; you really shouldn't speak ill of others behind their backs.
Ma Nanzheng nodded repeatedly, then smiled awkwardly and said, "Yes, I was just explaining the situation."
Xie Jingchen turned his gaze to Xia Fanxing and asked, "Do you mind if I sit here, Comrade Xia?"
"Of course I don't mind," Xia Fanxing said with a faint smile.
Xie Jingchen put down his plate and sat down opposite her, next to Ma Nanzheng.
Ma Nanzheng was so nervous and embarrassed that he was almost moving his hands and feet in unison.
Xia Fanxing couldn't help but chuckle and secretly gave him a reassuring look.
After Xie Jingchen sat down, many eyes in the cafeteria turned to them, seemingly curious and surprised that Xie Jingchen would be eating at the same table with a strange woman.
After a brief silence, Xie Jingchen suddenly spoke up: "I think I heard you guys discussing...eye contact?"
Ma Nanzheng immediately coughed, choking on a mouthful of steamed bun, which made his face turn red.
Xie Jingchen handed him a bowl of soup and gently patted his back.
Xia Fanxing smiled faintly and said, "Yes, Staff Officer Ma said your eyes are very powerful."
Ma Nanzheng drank the soup, wishing he could bury his whole head in the bowl.
Xie Jingchen raised an eyebrow slightly. "So Comrade Xia thinks so too?"
Upon hearing this, Xia Fanxing put down her chopsticks and carefully examined his eyes.
Xia Fanxing's direct gaze made Xie Jingchen, who was usually unmoved even if Mount Tai collapsed before him, feel somewhat uncomfortable.
But he didn't look away, because if he did, people would notice something was wrong.
“Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes ‘observation, auscultation, inquiry, and palpation,’ with particular emphasis on observing the eyes during observation,” Xia Fanxing explained. “Your eyes are indeed very bright and your gaze is sharp, which is a sign of abundant liver qi, since the liver opens into the eyes.”
Xie Jingchen was intrigued by this professional interpretation, "So, is a sharp gaze a sign of good health?"
"That's one way to put it," Xia Fanxing nodded. "However, too much rigidity can lead to breakage, and excessive liver qi can also cause irritability and insomnia. Have you been using the calming herbal pack consistently? How effective has it been?"
"Very good, sleeping soundly." Xie Jingchen said, his eyes softening unconsciously. "Thank you for your trouble, Comrade Xia."
Ma Nanzheng, who was standing to the side, was dumbfounded.
He had never seen the regimental commander speak in such a tone, nor had he ever seen anyone chat with the regimental commander so naturally.
And the topic of conversation was still the "gaze" he had just used to tease the team leader!
My goodness, how is Comrade Xia so amazing?
Xie Jingchen noticed Ma Nanzheng's expression, coughed slightly awkwardly, and changed the subject, asking, "How's Staff Officer Ma's work lately? Is it going smoothly?"
"Huh? Me? Not bad." Ma Nanzheng casually mentioned a few things.
Xie Jingchen listened, nodding occasionally.
After Ma Nanzheng finished speaking, he suddenly asked, "Do you really have nightmares?"
Ma Nanzheng was stunned for a moment, unable to react.
Xia Fanxing couldn't help but chuckle; she could tell that Xie Jingchen was deliberately teasing Ma Nanzheng.
A hint of a smile appeared in Xie Jingchen's eyes.
"Looks like I'll have to rein in my 'weapons' a bit," he said half-jokingly.
Such words would be normal for anyone else, but coming from Xie Jingchen, they sounded very abrupt.
At least in Ma Nanzheng's case, it was abrupt.
He had never seen the commander like this before!
Is this still the same stern and unsmiling regimental commander known as the "cold-faced devil"?
Xia Fanxing smiled faintly, "There's no need to restrain yourself. Traditional Chinese medicine also says, 'When the body's vital energy is abundant, pathogens cannot invade.' This is a sign that your vital energy is sufficient, but..."
She paused, seemingly considering her words.
"But what?" Xie Jingchen leaned forward, very interested in what followed.
Xia Fanxing leaned forward slightly and lowered her voice, saying, "It just might need some proper guidance; too much will cause it to overflow. I can prepare some liver-cleansing and vision-improving tea for you, which can keep your eyes clear without turning them into 'weapons'."
The distance between the two people gradually closed, creating a unique and subtle atmosphere in the noisy cafeteria.
Xie Jingchen could even see Xia Fanxing's long, curled eyelashes clearly.
They trembled slightly as she spoke, like tiny brushes brushing against his heart.
It tickled, making him want to laugh.
Xie Jingchen's lips curled up slightly, but he quickly suppressed it.
He stepped back slightly, but his gaze remained fixed on Xia Fanxing's face. "Then I'll have to trouble Comrade Xia."
“No trouble at all.” Xia Fanxing suddenly remembered something and took out a small paper packet from the cloth bag she carried with her. “I just happen to have prepared some chrysanthemum and goji berry tea today. It’s good for the liver and eyes, and it can also calm the nerves and help you sleep. You can try it first.”
Xie Jingchen took the tea bag, his fingertips inadvertently brushing against Xia Fanxing's palm.
They both paused for a moment, then simultaneously withdrew their hands.
"Commander, you should try it! Comrade Xia's medicine is really effective!" Ma Nanzheng finally found an opportunity to interject, trying to make up for his previous "disrespect".
Xie Jingchen couldn't help but smile as he thought of the calming medicine packet that emitted a minty scent every night by his pillow.
"Yes, I've tried it, and it really works."
"Huh? What did you try? When did you try it?" Ma Nanzheng was shocked.
He looked at Xie Jingchen, then at Xia Fanxing.
When did these two start secretly meeting behind his back?
He knew absolutely nothing.
They were having a little secret behind his back!
·
On the other side, Qiao Feitian, like a mouse hiding in the shadows, kept eavesdropping on their conversation.
From the moment Xie Jingchen sat down, her envy, jealousy, and hatred grew wildly like weeds.
She was jealous, she was furious!
But she is no longer engaged to Xie Jingchen, so she doesn't even have the right to stand by Xie Jingchen's side. How can she criticize Xia Fanxing?
Qiao Feitian reluctantly gripped her chopsticks, forcefully poked the steamed bun into her mouth.
But after only a few bites, she couldn't help but spit it out.
She suspected that there was sand mixed in the cornbread, otherwise how could it be so rough and hard to swallow?
Just then, Xie Jingchen asked, "Comrade Xia, do you have enough rice? Don't worry about saving food for me, just make sure you're full."
Xia Fanxing said, "Don't worry, Commander Xie, I won't make myself suffer. I'll definitely have enough to eat."
