"Wanying, are you sure you don't need me to go to the hospital with you for a checkup?" Su Zhichen asked, somewhat worried.
“Zhichen, it’s just a small inspection. Don’t worry, I can handle it by myself. It’s rare that you and the old chief get along so well. You two should chat more. Our Wantang is so grateful for the care of the old chief’s family.”
Su Zhichen hesitated for a moment, then said, "Alright."
After calming Su Zhichen down, Song Wanying left the compound.
Instead of going to the hospital, she went straight to the Friendship Store.
As soon as I entered, I went to the clothing section and spent 180 yuan to buy two down jackets. I put one on myself and packed the other away.
I went to the jewelry section and bought some pearl earrings and a solid gold necklace to dress myself up.
When she got to the cosmetics section, she bought four or five more boxes of face cream.
Finally, I also went to the grocery section and bought some canned meat, canned fruit, sunflower seeds, and other snacks.
After spending almost 400 yuan in small amounts, Song Wanying finally stopped.
Song Wanying entered the Friendship Store in an ordinary manner, but when she came out, she had transformed into a fashionable lady.
Unfortunately, it didn't last long. Song Wanying arrived at the bus stop with her bags and squeezed onto the crowded and smelly bus.
Her brows were so furrowed they could trap a fly.
But then, as if remembering something, her furrowed brows relaxed a little.
Cui Cui, Mom has come to see you.
After a nearly one-hour bus ride, Song Wanying got off at the bus stop closest to the Shengli Brigade where Huo Jun was stationed.
After walking for another half hour on a dirt road, Song Wanying finally entered the Shengli Brigade.
"Whose relatives from the city are visiting? Look, they've brought quite a lot of things."
"I don't know. I've never seen this person come to the brigade before, and I've never heard of anyone in our brigade having such a relative."
The people who were working in the field stopped what they were doing, huddled together, and pointed at Song Wanying, talking amongst themselves.
Having been accustomed to being a noblewoman, Song Wanying looked down on these lower-class people.
At this moment, surrounded by people pointing and whispering, his expression was extremely unpleasant.
But she felt even more sorry for Liu Cuicui.
Her Cui Cui is now working in the fields just like these peasants.
It's so cold today!
She had just gotten off the bus when a gust of cold wind blew in through her collar, making her grit her teeth and shiver.
Cui Cui, you're so silly!
If they had listened to her back then and hadn't gone through with this arranged marriage, she would be the one being pampered and cherished by the Lu family now!
Song Wanying thought angrily, but her eyes searched through the crowd. After a while, she frowned impatiently.
They all look the same, so tacky, where can you find them?
But Song Wanying couldn't bring herself to lose face by shouting and yelling to find Liu Cuicui; she couldn't bring herself to do that.
Since having her head shaved and being paraded through the streets, Song Wanying has become more concerned with her appearance than before.
As he frowned, Qian Guochao walked over.
"Miss, who are you looking for in our brigade?"
"Liu Cuicui".
Qian Guo's expression changed: "Who are you to her?"
"I am her—"
Song Wanying quickly corrected herself when she called her "Mom," saying, "Auntie, come and see her."
Qian Guo glanced at Song Wanying, pondered for a moment, and decided it was best not to say anything more to avoid getting into trouble.
"Wait here, I'll go and call her mother-in-law."
A short while later, Qian Guo came over with Huo Xiaoyan and Huo Yan.
"Auntie, what brings you here? You didn't even say hello, and there's not a single meat dish to serve you." Huo Xiaoyan walked over, grabbed Song Wanying's arm, and greeted her warmly.
Song Wanying abruptly took two steps back, dodging Huo Xiaoyan's attacking black claws, and said with a look of disgust, "You didn't wash your hands, don't touch me. This down jacket of mine is expensive! 120 yuan! If you get it dirty, can you afford to pay for it?"
Upon hearing these arrogant words, Qian Guo secretly rejoiced that he hadn't revealed the news that "Liu Cuicui is dead."
"You guys have a good chat, I'm going to get back to work."
The envy in Huo Yan's eyes turned into resentment: "My mother welcomed you, how could you look down on her? You're humiliating her with money!"
After Huo Yan finished speaking, Huo Xiaoyan called out, "Yan'er, you mustn't be rude."
“This is your sister-in-law Cui Cui’s aunt. According to seniority, you should also call her Aunt.”
Under Huo Xiaoyan's oppressive gaze, Huo Yan pouted, unwillingly calling out, "Little—"
Song Wanying reached out to interrupt her: "No, I don't have a relative like you who comes from the countryside."
"Mom," Huo Yan said, looking at Huo Xiaoyan with a wronged expression.
Huo Xiaoyan patted her hand silently to comfort her.
Song Wanying had no time to watch the two of them put on a show of motherly affection; it only annoyed her.
"Where's Cui Cui? Why are only the two of you here!"
The mother and daughter exchanged a glance and led Song Wanying home.
"Auntie, Cui Cui has been sick these past few days and is resting at home. I'll take you home."
"What?" Song Wanying looked distressed. "Why is Cui Cui sick? Why didn't you say so earlier? What are you dawdling for? Take me to your house right now!"
Upon arriving home, Song Wanying was eager to go into the inner room to see Liu Cuicui, but Huo Xiaoyan quickly stopped her.
"Auntie, Cui Cui has smallpox. Don't go in, it's contagious."
Song Wanying hurriedly slapped Huo Xiaoyan's hand away, took several steps back, and angrily retorted, "Smallpox? Why didn't you say so earlier? Who knows if you've been infected?"
Huo Yan puffed out her cheeks and said, "I had it when I was little, but my mom took care of me, so I won't get it."
“Auntie, how about I open the window for you so you can peek inside? You can come back to see her again once Cuicui is better?”
After thinking about it, Song Wanying reluctantly agreed to the proposal.
Huo Xiaoyan gave Huo Yan a wink, and Huo Yan opened the door a crack and squeezed in.
