"Are you very free?" Lu Huai'an's eyes narrowed slightly, his tone seemingly laced with sarcasm, as if he were about to drag Luo Xiao out for some training if he nodded.
"Huh?" Luo Xiao scratched the back of his head. "It's alright! Brother Huai'an, don't change the subject, this is very serious..."
Lu Huai'an closed the document, stood up, grabbed Luo Xiao by the back of his collar, and dragged him out.
"You still have the mind to meddle in my private affairs? Looks like you're bored. I happen to be free, so I'll give you a massage."
The two figures disappeared into the corridor of the administration building.
After they left, Yang Bing, who had been lying flat against the door next door, slowly walked out.
He stared at the empty corridor, a single thought flashing repeatedly through his mind.
Nan Zhi and the captain had talked before...
-
Lu Huai'an didn't take this to heart; he even thought it was a joke.
He didn't even mention it to Su Wantang.
Luo Xiao secretly tattled on her, but Su Wantang didn't take it to heart.
She believed Lu Huai'an more than what Gu Nanzhi said.
Another point is that love has never been Su Wantang's everything; she has the composure and confidence to face it.
Three days had passed since Su Wantang left the army to do publicity work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Hello comrade, I'm looking for Director Wen Wanqing. Could you please go in and call her?"
"Looking for Director Wen?" The guard's lazy gaze suddenly became intriguing.
Is he not here?
Su Wantang asked, "Has Director Wen gone out on fieldwork?"
"Who are you to her? What do you want with her?"
Su Wantang didn't think much of it: "I'm her daughter-in-law, and I've been here once before."
This reminder stirred something deep within the guard's memory: "It was you?"
A hint of sympathy appeared in his eyes as he said, "Director Wen has made a serious mistake in his work and has been suspended from his duties."
"What?" Su Wantang's voice rose involuntarily, but after a moment, she calmed down and asked for details, "When did this happen?"
"The day before yesterday afternoon."
The day before yesterday afternoon?
It's been two days, and Mom hasn't shown any signs of anything amiss.
Mom is so career-oriented, how did she manage to spend the last two days?
Su Wantang couldn't help but feel sorry for him: "Comrade, do you know why?"
The guard waved his hand: "How could I, a mere gatekeeper, possibly know anything about this place? You should leave now; the person you're looking for isn't here."
"Brother, please have mercy, could you please shout—"
Halfway through her speech, Su Wantang stammered. Last time she came, Wen Wanqing personally greeted her, so she didn't get to talk much with the people inside. Now she couldn't even say a name.
"My mom's colleague came out for a bit, so I asked her a couple of questions."
At the gate, Su Wantang wanted to give a gift, but fearing it would have a bad influence, she could only plead in a low voice.
The guards, being professionally trained, naturally rejected Su Wantang without hesitation.
"Get out! Get out now! Otherwise, we'll have someone kick you out!"
-
"Sister-in-law, what brings you here?" Wen Yingying asked, her cherry-like lips slightly parted.
Is it time to catch up?
My aunt came yesterday too, saying she was taking a break and wanted to keep my grandparents company.
Su Wantang asked anxiously, "Yingying, is my mom home?"
Wen Yingying shook her head: "Auntie came yesterday, but not today."
She was very observant and noticed that Su Wantang's expression was not quite right. Wen Yingying's impression of this cousin-in-law was that she was indifferent, but right now, even the strands of her cousin-in-law's hair seemed to be expressing her urgency.
Wen Yingying asked softly, "Sister-in-law, has something happened to Auntie?"
Wen Wanqing didn't mention this matter when she came yesterday, so Su Wantang naturally wouldn't bring it up.
"It's alright." Su Wantang stuffed the gifts she had hurriedly bought into Wen Yingying's hands. "Yingying, your cousin-in-law has something to do, so she won't go in. Please give my regards to Grandpa, Grandma, and all the uncles and aunts, and say apologies."
"Cousin-in-law—"
The wind blew, and Wen Yingying's voice was carried away.
She closed the courtyard gate, took the gifts, and went inside.
As soon as Wen Yingying entered, Grandpa Wen noticed the empty space behind him and the fine wine and malted milk powder in her hands.
"Who came? Why did they leave again?" He asked seriously, but without questioning, only with a hint of doubt.
Wen Yingying bit her lip and said, "It's my cousin-in-law. She was on her way to make a house call and passed by our house, so she bought some gifts and brought them over. She said she was busy with other things and would come over to visit next time."
Grandma Wen's wrinkled eyes crinkled into a warm smile: "This child is thoughtful."
Grandpa Wen stroked his beard: "Huai'an has found a good wife."
"Yingying, next time you get your medicine, tell your grandma to make some dried meat to take with you. I saw that girl really liked it around Chinese New Year."
Wen Yingying breathed a sigh of relief: "Okay."
-
She's not at home, nor at her parents' house. Where could Mom have gone?
Without a clue, Su Wantang unconsciously walked to the phone booth, her eyes suddenly shifting.
Just as my fingers pressed two dial buttons, a flash of inspiration suddenly appeared in my mind.
Su Wantang immediately stopped dialing, and the receiver struck the telephone slot with a clattering sound.
After searching through Xinhua Bookstore and Chinese bookstores, Su Wantang found Wen Wanqing studying diligently in a foreign language bookstore, and her gaze paused slightly.
The warmth inside chased away the wind and frost of the journey, and Su Wantang truly understood the meaning of "concern leads to confusion" at this moment.
That's true. Mom is so strong and composed, how could she be easily defeated? She underestimated Mom's excellence.
Su Wantang did not go forward to disturb her. She glanced around, found a foreign medical book, sat down opposite Wen Wanqing, and began to read it carefully.
Wen Wanqing watched intently, and when she heard the sound of the chair scraping against the floor, she didn't look up, but only frowned slightly.
The bookstore was quiet, with only the rustling sound of pages being turned.
