Chapter 49 The Out-of-Control Old Man

Su Wantang's eyelids twitched, and she quickly turned her head to look.

"Auntie, we—"

The next second, a tall figure appeared in front of her.

"Mom," Lu Huai'an frowned, "Why were you eavesdropping?"

"You're talking badly about me, and you can't even do it behind my back. You're saying it right outside the door. Do you really think your mother is that perverted? Next time, say it behind closed doors. I don't want to see you, you bastard, saying such disgusting things."

Su Wantang raised the corners of her lips; her mother-in-law was truly a lively character.

When she caught the cricket on her son and daughter-in-law's back, instead of getting furious, she suggested that they talk about it behind closed doors next time.

This son was raised in vain!

Wen Wanqing sighed inwardly. Just as she reached the doorway, she glanced at the courtyard and turned back to ask, "Where's the toilet?"

"Auntie, over here."

Su Wantang stepped forward to give Wen Wanqing directions, a faint smile still lingering on her lips.

She didn't want to laugh, but she couldn't help it.

"Laugh if you want to! Your face is all scrunched up like an old woman's, it's so ugly!"

Su Wantang instantly stopped laughing.

Her mother-in-law's mouth... is truly indescribable.

After using the restroom, Wen Wanqing returned to her room to rest, and Su Wantang and Lu Huai'an also entered the room.

Su Wantang briefly recounted what had happened that day to Lu Huai'an, omitting the "three-year agreement" with Wen Wanqing. Firstly, she felt it was unnecessary to mention it, and secondly, she didn't want the mother and son to have a conflict over it.

Finally, she said very seriously, "Huai'an, Auntie didn't make things difficult for me."

Upon hearing this, Lu Huai'an, who had been on tenterhooks, breathed a sigh of relief, but soon frowned again.

"Aunt?"

"Wantang, does Mom not approve of you as her daughter-in-law? She won't let you call her Mom?"

That's not it.

When Su Wantang saw the woman claiming to be Lu Huai'an's mother and her mother-in-law come to find her, she was confused and suspicious. But she had carefully looked at Wen Wanqing's eyebrows and eyes and found that they were five parts similar to Lu Huai'an's. Besides, Wen Wanqing had no reason to lie to her with such a lie that could be exposed with a simple question.

It was just too sudden. She and Lu Huai'an were in the stage of their relationship warming up but hadn't yet confessed their feelings. She just couldn't bring herself to call him "Mom."

With Wen Wanqing's sharp tongue right there behind her, she felt even more certain that calling her "Auntie" was the right thing to do.

Su Wantang's silence was the answer in Lu Huai'an's heart.

"Wantang, Mom is Mom, and I am me. I will not divorce you."

Upon hearing Lu Huai'an's words, Su Wantang knew he had misunderstood. She was about to explain when she heard the second half of the sentence, "not to divorce," and suddenly felt like teasing him.

"Lu Huai'an! I never agreed to be your wife! If you don't satisfy me, we'll still get a divorce in a year!"

As she spoke, Su Wantang deliberately put on a stern face, her expression particularly serious.

Unconsciously, a pair of large hands gripped his heart tightly, and a fine layer of glistening tears appeared on Lu Huai'an's forehead.

But the panic and confusion only lasted a few seconds before Lu Huai'an's brows furrowed and he said seriously, "Wantang, I will try my best to satisfy you. If, after a year... I still cannot win your heart, I will divorce you and let you go."

Giving up after a year of unsuccessful pursuit made Su Wantang doubt Lu Huai'an's feelings for her. Her face darkened, but the next second, upon hearing Lu Huai'an's next words, she curled her lips into a smile. That's more like it.

"But I will not give up on you. As long as you are unmarried, Wan Tang, I will continue to pursue you. If you choose to marry someone else, I will never appear in front of you again."

I will apply to be stationed on the border and never marry again!

Lu Huai'an didn't say this aloud because he was afraid Su Wantang would feel burdened.

"Come closer." Su Wantang took out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from Lu Huai'an's forehead: "I was just teasing you, look how scared you are."

"Wantang, could you please not say things like that in the future?"

Su Wantang asked blankly, "Why?"

"I'll take it seriously!"

As if afraid that Su Wantang wouldn't believe him, Lu Huai'an suddenly grabbed Su Wantang's wrist. He held Su Wantang's hand against his left chest, feeling the pounding heartbeat under his palm. Su Wantang felt her palm burning hot and subconsciously tried to pull her hand away, but she couldn't.

She looked up and was met with the fiery passion in the boundless darkness, her heart leaping into her throat.

For a fleeting moment, Su Wantang was bewitched and wanted to blurt out a sentence.

"Okay! Lu Huai'an, let's live a good life together from now on!"

Knock knock knock.

The rhythmic knocking interrupted the tranquil atmosphere of the room.

Lu Huai'an let go of her hand, and seeing Su Wantang's dazed look, he felt a little guilty.

"I'm sorry, I startled you, Wan Tang."

"I will try to be more restrained."

A 25-year-old man, once aroused, can be quite fierce. With Su Wantang constantly provoking him, Lu Huai'an lost control and his usual composure.

Lu Huai'an rubbed Su Wantang's head: "Don't worry about Mom, I'll take care of it."

Lu Huai'an was talking about feelings, but Su Wantang misunderstood.

Her eyes widened, and she immediately looked down, but only managed to catch a glimpse of Lu Huai'an's back as he opened the door.

Realizing what she was doing, Su Wantang's face instantly turned bright red.

She muttered to herself, "Su Wantang! What nonsense are you thinking?! Huai'an was clearly apologizing for suddenly grabbing my wrist!..."

"Wantang, I'll go make dinner."

Hearing this, Wen Wanqing, who was standing at the door, felt dizzy. After eating delicacies, who would want to eat coarse food?

But she didn't say anything, after all, her daughter-in-law wasn't brought in to be her family's maid.

It's such a pity.

Looks like I'll have to wait until next time to freeload.

"Wantang, what's wrong? Your face is so red. Are you sick? Shall I take you to the hospital?"

"Are you stupid! You could have rushed to the hospital instead of asking such pointless questions!"

After Wen Wanqing said that, Lu Huai'an didn't delay. However, just as he was about to pick up Su Wantang, Su Wantang dodged away.

"I'm not sick, I'm just a little hot."

"real?"

Why is your face so red if you're not sick?

Wen Wanqing couldn't stand Lu Huai'an's foolish behavior and said irritably, "What, do you think she, a doctor, could fool you?"

"Mom," Lu Huai'an called out, frowning.

"Alright, you two will have plenty of time to be lovey-dovey tonight. Now hurry up and cook dinner."

Lu Huai'an was sent to cook by Wen Wanqing. Su Wantang felt uncomfortable being alone with Wen Wanqing, so she followed her into the kitchen.

"Huai'an, I'm here to help you."

Seeing this, Wen Wanqing was delighted.

This rascal is actually somewhat useful.

Wen Wanqing enjoyed her dinner to the fullest, though it would have been even better if Lu Huai'an hadn't said a word.

"Mom, when are you leaving?"

She just arrived, and they're already kicking her out. How afraid they are of her becoming a wicked mother-in-law?

Wen Wanqing didn't indulge Lu Huai'an: "Let's go see Wan Tang! I'll go with her!"
