Chapter 65 I'm Happy to Peel Shrimp for You
Xu Runli's hand was suspended in the air, and the color on her face had completely drained away.
She pulled her hand back abruptly, and the ribs fell into the bowl with a thud, splashing oil onto her clothes.
"Oh!" she cried exaggeratedly, picking up a handkerchief and wiping the collar of her dress. "This greasy spot is really disgusting. It's dirty even on a newly made coat. Zhicheng specially asked someone to buy me the fabric, saying it's the most fashionable color this year."
Yun Tangyin was eating the shrimp that Fu Yucheng had peeled. She didn't even look up when she heard this. "Fashionable colors don't get dirty easily. How can they be as practical as a gray cloth jacket? People from capitalist families should dress more simply to avoid gossip."
Fu Yucheng immediately responded: "Well, Yinyin looks good in anything she wears."
He placed the peeled shrimps on the edge of Yun Tangyin's bowl, forming a small circle. "Is that enough? If not, I'll peel more."
Xu Runli's hands, which were holding the handkerchief, were twisted into a knot. She mentioned the new jacket on purpose, just to imply that Yun Tangyin was not as well dressed as she was, but she didn't expect to be fed with dog food again.
"It's simple, but it makes me look old." She forced a smile, "Sister, you're obviously older than me, but when you dress simply, you look like you're a generation older than me."
As soon as these words left her mouth, Yu Xia burst out laughing. "How could that be? The last time I took Yinyin to the supply and marketing cooperative, Accountant Wang said she looked like a recent graduate. But you, if you didn't know better, would have thought you were someone's sister-in-law from another province visiting relatives."
Xu Runli's face flushed and paled: "I just wanted to dress decently. I couldn't embarrass Zhicheng."
"How could Zhicheng think you're embarrassing?" Jiang Jianhua finally found an opportunity to talk. "If he dares to dislike you, I'll speak up for him! I can't stand a man who disgraces his wife for another woman."
Fu Yuanshan put the bowl on the table and frowned: "When have I ever disliked you?"
Jiang Jianhua also got angry: "Why are you taking it for granted?"
Seeing that the two were about to quarrel again, Song Yushuang was about to speak, but Yun Tangyin picked up the soup bowl and changed the subject: "Mom, after the new clothes are made, do you want me to go with you to get a perm?"
Song Yushuang nodded and praised Yun Tangyin a few more times.
Fu Yucheng peeled the last shrimp and placed it in Yun Tangyin's bowl. "Are you full? If you're full, I'll take you to the army. We've just received a batch of new books. Pick out a few to read and cheer you up."
"Okay." Yun Tangyin stood up, and the silver bracelet on her wrist made a crisp sound: "Mom, we're leaving first."
Song Yushuang waved his hands: "Go, come back soon."
Fu Yucheng walked in front, Yun Tangyin followed beside him, the evening breeze blew the loose hair on her temples, and the silver bracelet on her wrist swayed gently with her footsteps, making a tiny sound.
"Just now at the dinner table, Xu Runli was almost embarrassed." Yun Tangyin thought of Xu Runli's pale and blue face, and couldn't help but curl the corners of her lips.
Fu Yucheng stopped and turned around to straighten her hair that was messed up by the wind: "If she had been more obedient, this wouldn't have happened."
His fingertips touched the skin behind her ear, and when he saw the tip of her ear turn slightly red, he withdrew his hand and continued walking forward. "Next time someone gives you trouble, you don't have to ask for it yourself, I'll do it."
"How can I always let you stand up for me?" Yun Tangyin took out a candy from her pocket, peeled off the candy wrapper and handed it to his mouth, "Try it? This is the fruit candy that my sister-in-law bought at the supply and marketing cooperative. It's quite sweet."
Fu Yucheng held the candy in his mouth, the sweetness spreading on the tip of his tongue. His eyes fell on her fingertips which were stained with candy residue, and his Adam's apple moved slightly: "Sweeter than candy."
Yun Tangyin didn't react: "What?"
"You." Fu Yucheng's voice deepened. The setting sun stretched his shadow very long, just enough to encircle hers in his arms: "You are sweeter than sugar."
Yun Tangyin's cheeks instantly became hot, and she raised her hand and gently pushed him: "Still outside."
Although she said this, her steps slowed down and she quietly moved closer to him.
The two of them walked to the entrance of the army. The sentry saluted with a smile, then said with a grin, "Brother Fu, are you bringing your family with you?"
"Well, come get some books."
Fu Yucheng returned the greeting and stepped aside to let Yun Tangyin pass first: "This is my love, Yun Tangyin."
The sentry's eyes lit up: "Hello, sister-in-law! Brother Fu always said that you are a cultured person and well-educated. We have never seen you before, but now we finally see you."
Yun Tangyin smiled and nodded: "Hello, sorry to bother you."
After entering the barracks, Fu Yucheng took her to the reading room: "The new books are all in there, you can choose."
The reading room was very quiet, with a faint scent of ink floating in the air.
Yun Tangyin walked to the bookshelf, ran her fingertips across the spines of the books, and just as she pulled out a copy of "How the Steel Was Tempered", Fu Yucheng gently put his arms around her waist from behind.
"Don't move." He rested his chin on the top of her head, his voice mixed with sweetness and warmth, "Let me hold you for a while."
Yun Tangyin's back was pressed against his chest, and she could clearly hear his steady heartbeat.
She relaxed, put the book on the shelf next to her, and held his hand with her backhand: "Today at the dinner table, the way you peeled shrimp was like a little wife."
Fu Yucheng chuckled softly, the vibration of his chest coming through their skin: "I'm happy to peel shrimp for you."
He paused, stroking the silver bracelet on her wrist with his fingertips. "Does the bracelet still fit? If it's loose, I'll take you to the silver shop to have it altered."
"It fits my hand quite well." Yun Tangyin turned the bracelet. "How do you know what size bracelet I should wear?"
"I touched it." Fu Yucheng seemed like a different person. He became much thicker-skinned and even directly confessed that he had held Yun Tangyin's wrist so he remembered it clearly.
Yun Tangyin felt warm in her heart. She turned around, stood on tiptoe, and gently touched his cheek: "Fu Yucheng, why are you so nice?"
Fu Yucheng's ears instantly turned red, as if burned, but he hugged her tighter with his backhand: "It will be better in the future."
He lowered his head to look into her eyes, which were filled with tiny glimmers of light. "When I'm done with this busy period, I'll take a day off and take you for a walk along the Songhua River. I heard the sunset there is beautiful."
"Okay." Yun Tangyin's eyes lit up, "Then I have to make a pair of comfortable shoes in advance, otherwise my feet will hurt after walking for a long time."
"You don't have to do it, I'll buy it for you." Fu Yucheng scratched her nose, his eyes full of doting: "The department store just got a batch of rubber-soled shoes, soft and light. I'll buy you a pair tomorrow."
The two of them leaned against the bookshelf and talked for a while. Fu Yucheng was afraid that she would be tired of standing, so he moved a wooden stool for her to sit on. He squatted in front of her and told her interesting stories in the army.
She said that Old Zhang from the kitchen always put too much salt in his cooking, that the communicator Xiao Zhou was caught by the instructor writing a love letter, and that she won first place in the last shooting competition and the prize was an enamel pot, which she planned to use as a mouthwash cup when she got home.
Yun Tangyin listened attentively, laughing out loud from time to time, her fingers unconsciously curling the corner of his clothes.
"It's time to go back, or Mom will be worried." Fu Yucheng looked at the sky, stood up and dusted off the corners of her clothes. "Have you picked out the books? I'll hold them for you."
