It was Yu Aiguo's voice.
"dad……"
Yu Hao's throat tightened instantly, his voice trembled uncontrollably, and it was filled with a heavy sob.
Yu Aiguo paused for a moment on the other end of the phone, and the background noise decreased, indicating that he had moved to a quiet place.
He sighed heavily, his tone full of understanding.
"So, what trouble have you gotten yourself into this time?"
That brat, he never calls when he's broke, and if he does, it's never good news.
"Dad, I...I was wrong..."
Yu Hao could no longer hold back and recounted the whole story in a choked, incoherent manner.
How he bragged and fooled Yu Siyuan into becoming crippled, how he led people to the countryside, how he discovered his aunt and uncle picking up cow dung, and how he was ultimately scolded like a dog.
He still had some sense left and didn't dare mention his aunt and uncle's family on the phone. He only talked about the situation in the village, how the work was going, and how the people were behaving. He didn't say anything else.
There was a deathly silence on the other end of the phone.
Yu Hao thought the call had been disconnected, and his heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to jump out of his throat.
"You bastard!"
Yu Aiguo finally spoke, his voice filled with barely suppressed anger, "What did your mother and I tell you? We told you to behave yourself at home! And what did you do? You just kidnapped someone and sold them to the countryside!"
Despite the scolding, he's still his own son.
Yu Aiguo rubbed his throbbing temples and said, "Alright, what's with all this crying and wailing! Your grandfather has already arranged everything. Your aunt's husband's cousin, whom you should call your great-uncle, is in Guangzhou. I'll call him later and ask him what's going on, and get him there as soon as possible."
He paused, his tone carrying an unquestionable command.
"Give me the phone number of your brigade. I'll have the post office send you a telegram if I get any news."
"Yes, yes, yes!" Yu Hao quickly rattled off a string of numbers, which he had specifically asked the captain's office for before leaving home that day.
After hanging up the phone, Yu Hao felt as if all his strength had been drained, and he leaned limply against the wall, panting heavily.
The heavy weight that had been crushing me in my heart was finally pried open.
He dragged his weak legs out of the post office, and as the biting cold wind blew, his stomach started growling uncontrollably.
As if drawn by something, he plunged headlong into the state-run restaurant across the street.
The restaurant wasn't crowded, but the irresistible aroma of meat instantly whetted his appetite.
He ordered a large plate of braised pork and two bowls of rice.
When the piece of braised pork, with its perfect balance of lean and fat, stewed until tender and flavorful, slid into his mouth, the sweet and salty broth exploded on his tongue, and he almost swallowed his tongue.
He felt like he had come back to life.
After devouring the food, he gritted his teeth and used the last of his money and tickets to buy a serving of braised pork and a serving of braised fish.
As he boarded the oxcart back to the village, he clutched the two warm lunchboxes tightly to his chest.
The warmth of the lunchbox burned his chest through his cotton-padded coat.
He was thinking to himself that he should go back and apologize to his cousin properly.
This time, he truly understood what it meant to be arrogant and overconfident, and what it meant to be presumptuous.
Yu Hao is a big-hearted person. Although he regretted it to death last night, he has recovered now.
What he thought about most was how to get things back on track.
If they can get in touch with his father and have him contact Yu Siyuan's great-uncle, the cousin will probably be able to meet up with his grandfather in the end.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned... This chapter has been read (please click to continue reading the next chapter!).
