He raised his voice, almost shouting it out.
"Yan Yu! Brigade Commander Yan will not agree!"
This time, Yan Yu finally stopped.
He slowly turned around.
Under the cover of night, those unfathomable eyes fell on Gu Jinzhou without any emotion, as if looking at a speck of dust that was getting in his way.
"I am not you."
Four words, light and airy, yet like an invisible slap, struck Gu Jinzhou's face hard, leaving a burning pain.
"What do you mean?!" Gu Jinzhou felt a tightness in his chest from the condescending gaze and questioned him angrily.
"Literal meaning."
Seeing that Yan Yu was about to leave after speaking, Gu Jinzhou could no longer hold back. He rushed forward and blocked Yan Yu's path, his eyes filled with an almost obsessive madness.
"Explain yourself clearly!"
Yan Yu lowered his eyes impatiently, looking at Gu Jin-zhou, who was a head shorter than him but had a stubborn expression and a stubborn neck, and finally spoke.
His voice was as cold as if it were filled with ice, capable of freezing a person's bones.
"I am the master of my own life."
"Ha, what nonsense are you talking about?!" Gu Jinzhou laughed as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. "In a family like ours, how could we possibly have control over our own marriages..."
Yan Yu's gaze grew even colder, the biting chill of which directly interrupted his words.
“Since I was born, I have never spent a single penny of the Yan family’s money.”
His voice was flat and unwavering, yet it was like the sharpest sword, piercing deeply into Gu Jinzhou's heart.
"After the age of eleven, he never used a single resource from the Yan family."
"They never raised me."
"Therefore, I am naturally in charge of my own life."
After saying that, he turned and walked straight past Gu Jinzhou without looking back.
Gu Jinzhou was struck dumb, frozen in place.
The tall figure appeared fragmented and distorted by the dim light.
He muttered to himself absentmindedly, over and over again.
"Impossible...this is impossible..."
Yan Yu paid no attention to how distraught the people behind him were; whether Gu Jinzhou believed him or not was none of his concern.
The original owner was like this before he was ten years old, and after he transmigrated here at the age of ten, it was even less likely that he would take any resources from the Yan family.
Even though he had moved into the military compound because he really didn't want to deal with an old man for the past six months, he still paid the old man's rent, utilities, and food expenses every month.
He didn't need to explain these things to an unimportant outsider.
No one knew about the conversation between the two, while on the other side, Ruan Tang and Lin Xiangnan were walking towards the village.
As night deepened, Shen Yishan walked to Ruan Tang's right, her voice carrying a lingering sense of melancholy.
"Ruan Tang, don't be fooled by Jin Zhou's cold attitude towards me now. We actually grew up together."
She drifted into her memories, a hint of anticipation in her voice.
“Our two families live in the same compound. My mother and his mother are best friends, like sisters. Aunt Bai has always liked me since I was little and always said that she wanted me to be her daughter-in-law in the future.”
Shen Yishan lowered her voice, as if she were describing a long-treasured painting.
"He's always been a quiet person, not one to talk much. But I know he cares about me."
“Back in school, he always walked ahead of me, at a distance that wasn’t too close or too far. None of the mischievous boys in the compound dared to mess with me, all because of him.”
"Another time, I accidentally fell down the steps and scraped my knees. He didn't say a word, but turned around and ran home to get his grandfather's most treasured safflower oil for me. He was clumsy and applied it, making me cry out in pain, but I felt so sweet inside."
As she spoke, a sweet blush rose on her face, as if she had returned to that afternoon.
Ruan Tang and Lin Xiangnan listened quietly without interrupting. You can't wake someone who's pretending to be asleep. (This chapter has been read. Please click to continue reading the next chapter!)
