Sang Feiyu went to bed early last night and woke up early this morning.
She needed to be on an empty stomach in the morning, so after washing up and changing her clothes, she waited for Ning Zhiyuan to come and find her so they could go to the military hospital for a physical examination together.
While waiting, Sang Feiyu habitually grabbed a rag, intending to wipe the yellow dirt off the shoes.
When her gaze fell on the arched sole of the thousand-layered sole sewn by the old craftsman of Guangzhou, she paused in her hand holding the rag. Never mind, she decided not to wipe it off, lest someone discover that there was something wrong with her shoes.
Bored, she played Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" in front of her. This piece was dedicated by Beethoven to his lover at the time. Beethoven was going through a lot of troubles, so the piece is full of melancholy.
She started practicing piano at a young age and also studied ballet with exiled Nordic nobles.
As Sang Feiyu played the air, her body involuntarily began to spin, and the familiar yet unfamiliar dance moves made the corners of her mouth turn up slightly.
When the music ended and the dance was over, she instantly returned to her original appearance, sitting quietly on the stool waiting for Ning Zhiyuan's arrival.
It was as if that scene had never happened.
Not long after, there was a knock on the door, "Xiao Yu".
Sang Feiyu quickly walked out, locked the door, and followed Ning Zhiyuan to the military hospital.
To ease Sang Feiyu's tension along the way, Ning Zhiyuan briefly explained the main items and procedures of the premarital checkup to her in advance. Sang Feiyu did not expect that in addition to checking physical fitness and fertility, the premarital checkup also included special procedures, such as tests of fidelity and cross-examination.
In fact, Sang Feiyu felt that military marriages were quite troublesome. Getting married required preparing three forms and five certificates, including a political review form, a physical examination form, a household registration certificate and application form, an identity certificate, a certificate from the employer, a letter of introduction, and a public notice certificate.
When the two arrived at the military hospital, Sang Feiyu's gaze couldn't help but fall on the female doctor in the white coat whose green military uniform collar was showing. The women's clinic had a sign that read "Women Hold Up Half the Sky," while the men's examination room had a sign that read "Prepare for War and Famine for the People."
The first thing they did was submit a "Certificate of Marital Innocence" and a "Military Personnel Marriage Application Approval Certificate" specially approved by the military. In addition, they each submitted a one-inch photo to be affixed to their premarital medical examination registration card.
The second step involved reciting "Quotations from Chairman Mao" in the hospital corridor and signing a guarantee promising not to conceal illnesses or marry into hostile forces.
The next step is the examination process, with men and women examined separately.
During the examination, the hospital will ask questions unexpectedly to observe the couple's reaction speed and ability.
The final result will be sealed in wax-sealed kraft paper and stamped with a five-star sealing wax seal. It will also need to be checked and confirmed by the military doctor, political commissar, and director of the Women's Federation.
Only Category A results are eligible for marriage; the other categories are pending observation and prohibited from marriage, respectively.
Because the premarital checkup is particularly rigorous, Sang Feiyu and Ning Zhiyuan took it very seriously and could not let their guard down until the results came out.
The two walked out of the military hospital around noon. Sang Feiyu rubbed her stomach and asked, "Shall we go eat?"
"Uh-huh."
"I'll take you home first, then I'll go to the cafeteria to get food."
Ning Zhiyuan had his own reasons for not wanting Sang Feiyu to eat in the cafeteria.
It was lunchtime, and the cafeteria was packed with men who smelled sour and pungent. He was worried that Sang Feiyu would run out and vomit before even going in, which would cause unnecessary misunderstandings and be troublesome.
Sang Feiyu didn't want to go to the crowded cafeteria, so she said, "I know the way myself. You go to the cafeteria to get your food first, and I'll wait for you at home."
Hearing "I'm waiting for you at home" made Ning Zhiyuan's heart pound and his face flush slightly.
Sang Feiyu thought it was just because the sun was too strong and his face was red, so he didn't think much of it.
"Then be careful, see you later." Ning Zhiyuan said reluctantly before turning and walking towards the cafeteria.
Sang Feiyu turned back the way she came, trying to avoid people as much as possible. Her status as a capitalist's daughter constantly reminded her to keep a low profile. As long as she didn't cause trouble and had the Ning family's protection, she should be able to survive.
When she finally got home, Sang Feiyu's face was covered in a fine layer of sweat. She found a towel, washed her face, and changed into a comfortable set of home clothes before she felt a little better.
