Lin Ying was preparing medicine at home when Zhao Qinghuai went to call people back. Together, they removed the roof tiles and replaced them.
As a result, the house that Lin Ying cleaned yesterday was once again a mess.
Fortunately, she had taken everything out beforehand, so nothing in the house got dirty.
Perhaps because they heard that working for Zhao Qinghuai paid one yuan a day, more people came to remove the roof tiles today. Naturally, the work was done much faster. The entire job, from removing the tiles to putting them back on, was completed in one day.
The room was a bit damp, so Zhao Qinghuai set up a tent and the two of them slept outside that night.
That evening, Lin Ying told Zhao Qinghuai that she had prepared the medicine and could treat him at any time.
Zhao Qinghuai also said, "Uncle Liu's wooden tub is almost ready. I reckon my dad hasn't had a bath in a long time, so I'll give him a bath tomorrow before giving him a medicinal bath."
Lin Ying nodded: "Okay. We'll go together then."
Zhao Daming's family waited for three days before the two finally arrived.
Guo Qiaoling came over once during that time because she was in a hurry, but left again when she saw how busy they were. There was one child and two children lying in bed at home, and even if she wanted to help, she was powerless to do so.
So all they could do was worry helplessly.
Guo Qiaoling was very happy to see the two of them coming.
Seeing Zhao Qinghuai carrying a large wooden tub, Guo Qiaoling felt a pang of heartache: "Why buy this? It's a waste of money. We have a big basin at home. We can use it for bathing too."
Zhao Qinghuai said irritably, "This is for my father's medical treatment. And didn't you see I'm carrying such a big thing? If you're blocking my way, I'll have to carry it for a while longer."
Guo Qiaoling quickly made way for her.
In the past few days, Zhao Qinghuai taught her a few phrases in the local dialect, and with what she heard from the villagers, she was able to understand some of it.
Even now, knowing about their conversation still makes me laugh so hard.
As soon as I entered, I heard Guo Qiaoling say, "I heard that you're paying people one yuan a day to fix your house? How much would that cost for so many people? It's not like we don't have a house; we can just live at home. Why waste money like that?"
Zhao Qinghuai didn't tolerate her at all, saying bluntly, "I earned this money, and I can spend it however I want. My wife hasn't said anything, so don't be a nuisance here. If you really have nothing to do, go boil some water and give my dad a bath first. My wife still needs to take my dad to see a doctor afterward."
Guo Qiaoling choked again. Too timid to speak, she turned and left.
Lin Yingcai doesn't care about their family affairs.
In fact, Lin Ying knew that Zhao Qinghuai harbored resentment towards the couple for not wanting him. These past few days, she'd noticed Zhao Qinghuai constantly looking at her hesitantly, and she knew he was considering raising his older brother's two children. But... even if Zhao Qinghuai adopted the children, wouldn't she be the one raising them in the end?
To be honest, we have plenty of food at home, so raising a couple more children wouldn't be a problem. However, she couldn't help feeling a little uneasy about raising other people's children for no reason.
So she kept quiet and waited for Zhao Qinghuai to tell her himself.
On one side was his kind older brother, and on the other were his parents who had abandoned him. Zhao Qinghuai felt a surge of anger that he couldn't vent. He felt incredibly frustrated and aggrieved.
But he couldn't just leave them like that.
So he could only grumble as he worked.
As for Guo Qiaoling, Lin Ying also discovered that, in the words of her current neighbor, Aunt Zhang, her mother-in-law was "simple-minded and cunning." That is to say, she wasn't very bright, but she was full of bad ideas.
When Zhao Qinghuai's sister-in-law was at home, she was like this, trying to act like a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, but she always did some petty things that were not presentable.
For example, in the past, whenever it was time to cook, this person would come out for a stroll.
For example, she feels unwell all the time when she goes to work. But she's always the first to run when it's time to collect her things, afraid that her daughter-in-law will take them.
She's the kind of person who's clever in a little way, but doesn't have the guts to actually be a wicked mother-in-law.
The villagers aren't stupid; anyone can see through what she's doing.
Lin Ying noticed that Zhao Si had tried to lecture her several times. But she didn't dare. Not only could Lin Ying possibly cure her husband, but if she dared to say a single word about Lin Ying, Zhao Si would take his wife and leave without hesitation. He wouldn't hold back at all.
Although she's been busy at home these past few days, she's still had some neighbors coming over to visit.
I also heard that when Lin Ying was cleaning the house and borrowing the roof, she heard a lot of noise inside, so Zhao Si jumped over the wall and went in. Several people saw how nervous he looked.
After boiling the water, Zhao Qinghuai poured the remaining cold water from the water tank into a wooden bucket, and then took the bucket to fetch more water.
By the time the water tank was full, the water in the pot had been boiling for quite a while.
Zhao Qinghuai poured the water into the wooden bucket upside down.
Zhao Qinghuai and Guo Qiaoling bathed Zhao Daming at home, while Lin Ying boiled water and cooked medicinal herbs outside.
As soon as she turned around, Lin Ying saw a timid pair of big eyes secretly watching her.
These eyes look so much like Zhao Qinghuai's. Thinking that Zhao Qinghuai might have looked like this when he was little, Lin Ying felt a pang of sadness and a softening of her heart for the child.
"Come here, Auntie has some candy, do you want some?"
Upon hearing Lin Ying speak, the child not only didn't come over, but ran away instead.
Lin Ying shook her head with amusement, then continued to observe the heat.
Unexpectedly, after a while, the child came over again, but this time there was a hint of longing in his eyes.
Lin Ying didn't tease him anymore and directly took out two White Rabbit candies: "Here, eat them."
Seeing that the child hadn't come over, Lin Ying put the candy on the cutting board next to her and said, "Come and get it yourself."
