"There's nothing there." Zhao Qinghuai deliberately provoked his sister-in-law's family yesterday. Since they were able to find out that the child had indeed been switched, they were already certain that they wouldn't dare to try anything more.
However, being cautious as always, he waited outside until nightfall to make sure no one came out before returning home. He went to keep watch again until midnight, but no one came out to report anything.
This made Zhao Qinghuai's heart sink, because she felt that the child might really have been taken to a very far place.
Therefore, he needed the help of the police station to have any chance of finding the child. However, Zhao Qinghuai felt that the chances of finding the child were very slim.
The two went to the county town together. Lin Ying went to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought another White Rabbit candy. After asking about the price of a water pump, Lin Ying didn't buy one. Instead, she planned to tell the uncle who was digging the well when she got back, because she needed a water pipe. It would be better to buy the water pipe at the same time.
However, she bought Xiao Shuanzi a pair of shoes and a set of clothes.
It's not for any other reason, it's just that this child is quite rare.
I didn't buy anything else. We have enough food at home, and we don't plan to stay here long, so there's no need to buy anything else.
When Zhao Qinghuai came to find her, he was followed by two ordinary-looking men. One looked to be in his forties, and the other was around twenty.
Zhao Qinghuai explained, "I've already told them that we'll go directly to Xiaxi Village later, and then go back."
Lin Ying replied, "Okay."
Zhao Qinghuai drove an oxcart, and two policemen rode bicycles to the home of Zhao Qinghuai's sister-in-law, Gao Youfa, in Xiaxi Village. When Gao Youfa and his wife saw the two men approaching, they raised their identification badges to show their identities.
The two of them collapsed to the ground.
Gao Youfa's wife burst into tears: "Didn't you say you wouldn't call the police if we told you everything we needed to know? You liar, you deserve to die a horrible death!"
Zhao Qinghuai said coldly, "Whether or not we arrest you is the police's business. I'm only here to find my brother's child! You are also the child's maternal and paternal grandparents, how can you be so heartless?"
Lin Ying wasn't interested in their investigation; she was still thinking about the heart-wrenching cries of a child she'd heard as she passed the village entrance. The child sounded breathless.
This made Lin Ying somewhat concerned.
Although she didn't think it was a big deal, Lin Ying was still worried: "I'm going out for a walk."
Zhao Qinghuai nodded: "Okay. Don't run around."
Lin Ying smiled and said, "Mm."
When Lin Ying arrived at the spot where the child had just cried, she could still hear the child crying, though the sound was weak and feeble.
She became anxious and pounded on the door. She even called the neighbors across the street, but still no one from that house came.
Who are you looking for?
Lin Ying explained, "I heard the child inside crying and seemed to have trouble breathing. I was worried that something might have happened to the child."
Upon hearing this, the neighbor cursed, "That damned woman, Duan Meixiang, is probably off gallivanting somewhere again, leaving the child at home."
As she spoke, the neighbor hurried over to open the door, skillfully running into the house. Lin Ying followed her into the room. She saw the child lying there, no longer crying, but his face turning slightly blue.
A step ahead of her neighbor, Lin Ying quickly brought the child over, stripped off the child's clothes, and began to perform emergency treatment.
Fortunately, the child was successfully rescued.
The child, who had caught his breath, started crying again.
Lin Ying dressed the child, picked him up, and comforted him.
The neighbor's cursing hadn't stopped; he kept cursing: "These two old folks, Li Baocai and his wife, are such honest people. How could they have such a terrible daughter-in-law? The old couple are busy from morning till night, just to take care of their daughter-in-law and child. Who knew that this mother would just throw the child out every day? I've never seen a mother so cruel."
Seeing that the child still seemed weak, Lin Ying asked, "Auntie, the child might be hungry. Is there anything you can give the child to eat?"
Upon hearing this, the auntie said, "I really don't know. How about this, I'll go to my house and get some rice porridge for the child."
Lin Ying quickly stopped her, saying, "No, Auntie, I have some milk candy here. You hold the child, and I'll go find something from his house to make some for the child to drink. The child looks very hungry. It'll be good for him to have some candy."
If such a young child has low blood sugar, it will harm the child's health.
The neighbor lady fell silent. She then sized up Lin Ying, noticing that Lin Ying's clothes and mannerisms suggested she wasn't an ordinary person, and the Mandarin she spoke indicated she was probably from the city. No wonder she could just pull out that White Rabbit candy so easily.
"Okay, I'll look after the child."
Lin Ying went to find a bowl, only to discover that there was no hot water in the house. Left with no other option, she simply took the hot water she had boiled herself from her spatial storage and added some spiritual spring water to it.
Lin Ying's spring water is cool; she's already checked it, and the cool spring water is the same as the previous well water. She knows the effect of that. She hasn't tried the hot water yet, so naturally she doesn't dare to use it recklessly.
After making a bowl of milk sugar water for the child and feeding it to him, the neighbor auntie coaxed the child to sleep.
After all this time, the family still hadn't arrived.
The neighbor was afraid of waking the child, and although she wanted to scold them, she thought about it and didn't: "Never mind, take the child to my house first. I'll bring him back when this family comes back."
Lin Ying smiled, "Auntie, you're a good person." She may have a sharp tongue, but she's kind at heart.
The neighbor was a little embarrassed to hear someone praise her like this for the first time: "If we're talking about good people, you're the real good person. I've been their neighbor for decades, so it's only natural for me to help out. You were just passing by, and you came all the way here to check on the child because you heard him crying. That's really commendable. I just saw what happened; if it weren't for you, the child might have died here today."
