Chapter 45 It's Snowing

With the basement secured, Lin Ying turned her attention to the stove for the underfloor heating.

We hadn't built a stove before, thinking that it would be inconvenient to light a fire, and that it might let in drafts in during the winter.

Given the size of the underground ash tunnel that Lin Ying built, it should be able to withstand at least one winter without needing to remove the ash.

With the first problem solved, Lin Ying is now considering how to solve the second one.

Make sure to put out firewood only once a day, and reduce the frequency of putting out firewood.

Therefore, Lin Ying decided to build an automatic wood-feeding machine next to it.

Of course, Lin Ying didn't have any ideas at first, but that didn't stop her from building the stove first. For convenience, she made the ash channel a ramp with a gap about a finger's width inside. This way, small amounts of wood ash could fall directly down the ramp. Of course, if a major cleaning was needed, the board could simply be pulled out.

The stove grate was something Lin Ying had bought beforehand, so she could use it directly. The stove itself was paved with small stones, with an opening on the side for adding firewood and an opening at the bottom for cleaning ash.

However, this opening can be sealed with a stone slab.

We'll determine the size of the gaps in the stone slabs based on the fire's intensity and the room's temperature.

As October approached, Lin Ying pulled up the vegetables in the garden and then removed the remaining soil from digging the cellar. The entire courtyard was now completely clean.

Having collected almost everything and made the pills, and prepared some commonly used pills and powders for later use, Lin Ying resumed her carpentry work.

With the shed in place, Lin Ying simply put all her tools inside.

Although the temperature inside the shed wasn't very high, it wasn't too cold when you were working.

Lin Ying first made a medicine cabinet and placed it in the kitchen where her bed used to be. She put all the medicinal herbs she had collected into it. Although there was enough space, she still needed a legitimate reason to use it.

After that, Lin Ying made another large wardrobe and put all the quilts that were still on the floor at home and the thick clothes that Lin Ying had made into it.

The weather is getting colder, and it's really inconvenient for Lin Ying to only have two sets of clothes to change into. So, she plans to make herself two more sets. She'll also make two sets of cotton-padded clothes, one thick and one thin.

Lin Ying doesn't like wearing sweaters because she finds them itchy. She's also unsure if it will be cold at home, so she'll decide what to wear based on the situation. For now, she's not thinking about it.

Lin Ying had no ideas for the automatic diesel feeder for the time being, so she put it aside for the time being.

That day, while Lin Ying was sewing at home, she heard someone calling outside. When she went out, she found a boy who didn't look very old. Judging from his clothes, he wasn't a military dependent, but rather a new recruit in the army.

Upon seeing Lin Ying come out, the boy immediately saluted and said, "Sister-in-law, there's a package for your family here. Please sign for it."

Lin Ying hurried over, glanced at it and saw that it was indeed Zhao Qinghuai's, so she signed her name: "Thank you."

The boy blushed and gave another salute: "Serve the people!"

Lin Ying watched the boy leave with a smile before taking the rather large package back with her.

Judging from the size of the package, it's probably made of cotton or something similar.

Lin Ying raised an eyebrow. Where did Zhao Qinghuai buy cotton from again?

Lin Ying didn't touch the package; she'd wait for Zhao Qinghuai to return.

Just as October began, a light snow fell from the sky, and the weather became noticeably colder.

Lin Ying originally planned to draw a wood-throwing machine, but instead of finishing the wood-throwing machine, she made a set of wooden sofas and a coffee table for the living room.

She wanted to make a desk, but she was worried that it would be too cold in winter and if she built a pit, there wouldn't be enough space in the house.

I simply didn't do it.

As the second snowfall began, it got very cold outside, and the underfloor heating in the house started working. While Lin Ying was studying blueprints at home, Zhao Qinghuai returned.

Lin Ying had blocked the front door of the house. She only heard some noise outside, so she shouted, "Go out the back door."

The person at the door paused for a moment, then walked towards the back.

Lin Ying arrived at the door and was surprised to find Zhao Qinghuai, whom she hadn't seen for a month.

Seeing that Zhao Qinghuai had lost even more weight, Lin Ying couldn't help but feel sorry for him: "Don't you eat anything while you're out?"

Zhao Qinghuai's eyes were filled with Lin Ying. Seeing the person he hadn't seen for a month right in front of him, he couldn't help but hug her tightly.

Lin Ying was actually quite happy to see Zhao Qinghuai like this, but this tenderness didn't last long before Lin Ying snuggled out of Zhao Qinghuai's arms:

"What does it taste like? It stinks!"

Zhao Qinghuai smiled helplessly: "Are you looking down on me?"

Lin Ying nodded: "To be precise, I'm disgusted by the smell on you. How long has it been since you took a shower?"

Zhao Qinghuai thought for a moment and said, "Okay, it has been a long time indeed."

Lin Ying went into the room first. "I'll boil some water for you, so you can take a shower first."

Zhao Qinghuai followed her in and noticed that there was another curtain between the kitchen and the bedroom. He lifted the curtain and Lin Ying handed him a pair of slippers.

It's obviously handmade.

"Wearing slippers at home is more convenient, and I find them quite comfortable. You should try them."

Zhao Qinghuai took off his shoes, and the smell from his feet immediately came out. He thought for a moment and said, "I think I'll take a shower before putting them on."

Lin Ying couldn't help but laugh again: "See, even you're disgusted with yourself. Then you can wear these slippers for now."

As she spoke, Lin Ying took out the slippers from the bathroom. She had bought them after the weather turned cooler, and because slippers were slow-moving items, they were surprisingly cheap. This was something Lin Ying hadn't expected.

As soon as Zhao Qinghuai entered the room, he felt it was warm and cozy inside, and he couldn't even wear his thick coat anymore.

Lin Ying felt sorry for Zhao Qinghuai and didn't let him fetch water: "Oh right, there's a package for you in the back room. Take a look. I'll call you when the bath water is ready."

Zhao Qinghuai roughly guessed what it was and nodded: "Okay, I'll go take a look."

Lin Ying first lit the stove for the bath, and started heating the water in the pot. Once it was heated to a certain temperature, Lin Ying went outside to fetch more water.

Although it wasn't cold outside, it wasn't warm either. Lin Ying was worried that it might suddenly snow and freeze, so she would take the handle of the water pump home when she wasn't using the water.

Now that she needed to pressurize the bathwater, Lin Ying directly replaced the channel in the water channel specially made above the stove and took the handle to the well.

Soon, the well water flowed along the drain into the heated pot. Because there was more water in the pot, it overflowed and flowed down the sink into the bathtub next door.

Feeling it was about time, Lin Ying took off her watch and brought it back. By then, the heated wall was already warm. Lin Ying sealed the stove, keeping the water in the pot hot, and lit the remaining matches to continue heating the wall.

Lin Ying went to the bathroom and, after confirming that the temperature inside was warm and the water temperature was suitable, went to call Zhao Qinghuai.

Unexpectedly, Zhao Qinghuai was asleep in the back room.

Seeing Zhao Qinghuai sitting on the floor, asleep on his bundle, Lin Ying couldn't help but feel both amused and sorry for him.

Lin Ying had just added matches to the stove; the house was quite warm. He wouldn't get cold, but it was still very uncomfortable.
