Chapter 52 A Warm Home

Lin Ying declined the commune director's invitation to dinner, and left the commune with a bag of brown sugar and a bag of sponge cake given to her by the director.

She originally planned to check if the town commune sold pickled vegetables or malted milk powder today, and if so, buy some, and then go to the city to check later.

Who knew that she would spend so much time at the commune? There was nothing she could do but buy whatever was available at the commune.

Lin Ying arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative and was surprised to find cabbage and radishes for sale there. However, vegetables here required coupons, which Lin Ying did not have.

Fortunately, Lin Ying cleverly asked a question and was relieved to learn that grain coupons could also be used to buy cabbage and radishes.

However, there was a purchase limit; each person could only buy a maximum of two cabbages and three catties of radishes at a time, and that three catties was the total amount of all kinds of radishes. Since Zhao Qinghuai hadn't taken the potatoes and sweet potatoes, Lin Ying didn't need to buy them. Therefore, there was nothing else she could buy.

But something is better than nothing; at least she needs to put on a show when Zhao Qinghuai is home.

Lin Ying bought cabbage and radishes, and two cans of malted milk powder. She couldn't find milk powder, so she bought two jin (1 kg) of White Rabbit milk candy. She heard that seven yuan can make a cup of milk with these candies, and there are about 90 candies per jin. Given Lin Ying's dislike for milk candy, two jin should last her a long time.

In other words, Zhao Qinghuai didn't spend much of his sugar coupons over the past two months. Fortunately, he probably knew that it was inconvenient for the military to buy these things, as the sugar coupons weren't valid for the current month. Otherwise, Lin Ying wouldn't have been able to buy these items either.

Canned fruit, on the other hand, didn't require coupons, but it was quite expensive. Lin Ying, having plenty of money, bought five cans. For the time being, this was the only fruit she could have in front of Zhao Qinghuai.

Afterwards, Lin Ying tore off a few more feet of cloth, intending to go back and make pajamas.

After putting everything into her basket, Lin Ying walked out of the supply and marketing cooperative.

Before leaving, Zhao Qinghuai said he would arrive in town around one or two o'clock. Lin Ying saw that the state-run restaurant was still open, so she went there to have her brunch.

After finishing her meal, Lin Ying bought a few steamed buns, thought for a moment, and then tucked them inside her thick cotton-padded coat. She then carried her basket on her back and left the state-run restaurant.

When Lin Ying came out, the trucks in the compound had already driven back. Lin Ying simply stood at the entrance of town and waited.

Fortunately, Lin Ying was dressed warmly, and the Lei Feng hat she had bought was warm enough. She didn't feel too cold while walking around outside.

Lin Ying didn't expect that she would wait until after 3 a.m., when it was already getting dark, before Zhao Qinghuai finally drove up.

Zhao Qinghuai parked his car next to Lin Ying and hurriedly ran over to help her with her basket: "Why are you waiting here? Why don't you go to the supply and marketing cooperative to wait?"

Lin Ying opened the car door, and Zhao Qinghuai put his things in the back seat, saying, "It's not good to be kicked out. Besides, I'm not cold from walking back and forth like this."

After Zhao Qinghuai put the things in the car, he held Lin Ying's hand and found that it was indeed warm: "You're not cold, are you? Your body and feet aren't cold either?"

Lin Ying nodded: "It's not cold, the shoes have rabbit fur insoles."

Seeing the dark circles under Zhao Qinghuai's eyes, Lin Ying handed her the steamed buns in her arms: "I'll drive, you eat and rest for a while."

Upon hearing this, Zhao Qinghuai readily got into the passenger seat. He hadn't slept for two days. The day before yesterday he was on night duty, yesterday he went hunting during the day, last night he was on duty again, and today he spent the whole day searching for medicinal herbs.

"I'm really hungry."

Lin Ying got into the driver's seat and started the car smoothly. Her driving skills were no worse than Zhao Qinghuai's.

Seeing how skillfully Lin Ying drove, Zhao Qinghuai felt relieved. He readily accepted the warm bun that Lin Ying had given him and ate it in large bites.

Halfway there, Lin Ying heard snoring and turned around to see Zhao Qinghuai sleeping soundly.

The roads were covered in snow, and after dark they started to icy and difficult to drive on. For safety, Lin Ying didn't drive fast. Fortunately, she arrived home safely.

The moment Lin Ying stopped the car, Zhao Qinghuai opened his eyes.

If it weren't for the bloodshot eyes that proved he had actually fallen asleep, Lin Ying would have thought he was faking it.

"Are you going straight back to your unit today, or are you going to stay home and rest for the night?"

Zhao Qinghuai wiped his face: "I need to go back to the unit and check the situation. Otherwise, I won't feel at ease."

Lin Ying felt sorry for Zhao Qinghuai, who might have to stay up all night again today, but there was nothing she could do: "Then be careful, I'll make sure you get some good nutrition after these few days!"

Upon hearing this, Zhao Qinghuai couldn't help but tap Lin Ying: "Your man is quite strong. Go back and lock the door tightly. I'm leaving now."

Lin Ying nodded: "Okay, be careful."

Zhao Qinghuai took Lin Ying's basket out of the car, and then took out a woven bag: "I bought these in town, you can take them back with you."

Lin Ying raised an eyebrow: "Zhao Qinghuai, are you hiding money from the world?"

Zhao Qinghuai choked: "No, it's all the pocket money you've given me these past few months, I haven't spent it."

Lin Ying was satisfied: "That's more like it. Okay, let's go."

Zhao Qinghuai couldn't help but laugh at Lin Ying's adorable appearance.

"Little housekeeper!"

Watching Zhao Qinghuai drive away, Lin Ying carried a basket on her back and a woven bag home.

By this time, it was completely dark, and some houses had already turned off their lights.

Lin Ying opened the shed door, put her things inside, and then fetched firewood to fill the automatic firewood feeder. Seeing that the feeder was about half full, Lin Ying filled it completely before taking her things home.

Although no one was home all day, the house was warm and cozy.

She felt even more strongly that her invention was incredibly useful.

Since Zhao Qinghuai wasn't there, Lin Ying naturally didn't want to make herself suffer. She went straight to her spatial storage to grow some vegetables, then took them out and made herself a big bowl of spicy rabbit noodles.
