Chapter 6 Insomnia

After receiving several packets of rapeseed, Lin Ying thought she couldn't take advantage of others for nothing, so she also bought a pound of Yihecheng pastries, the only kind available in the supply and marketing cooperative, and gave it to the sales clerk.

The saleswoman, speechless after being once again choked by the Little Red Book held up, never expected that the pastries she was selling were actually a gift to her, and her emotions became even more complicated.

These days, nobody has anything good. She was also a military wife, and because she was literate, she had the opportunity to work as a saleswoman.

Besides her husband's salary, she also receives 24 yuan a month. That adds up to over a hundred yuan. But everyone has poor relatives. They can't just think of themselves and ignore the elderly in their families, can they?

So, although she would buy pastries and the like for her children, she could count them on one hand.

She swallowed back the words she was about to say in refusal, but the woman, who had already turned and left happily, made her swallow them back. She could only watch the plump woman leave.

But she became curious about this woman she had never met before.

She couldn't help but ask the person next to her who had just been called over for help, "Whose daughter is this? I've never seen her before."

The person next to him couldn't help but shake his head: "I don't know. I heard that only two people have come to our family compound recently. One is the daughter of the new regimental commander of the Third Regiment, and the other is the sister of Battalion Commander Zheng of the First Regiment. Didn't we meet that sister before? She's quite pretty. So this one is probably the daughter of Regimental Commander Zhao."

Upon hearing that it was from Commander Zhao's family, the saleswoman recalled the gossip she had heard recently: "I was wondering why that girl had just pulled out such a large wad of bills from her pocket. She looks like that capitalist's daughter?"

"Oh, she's a capitalist's daughter? I thought she was a nice girl. What a pity."

"Who says otherwise? She's fair-skinned and chubby, with big, bright, sparkling eyes. It's a shame she can't talk. And her family background isn't good either. Sigh, I just gave her some rapeseed, will that be okay?"

"Who knows? But she's mute, so she won't tell anyone. Nobody else knows either. It should be fine. We can just cut off contact in the future."

"Sigh, what a world this is. Let's hope so."

Lin Ying didn't know what others were talking about her. After she got back, she found tree roots and installed them on all the farm tools she had bought.

Lin Ying noticed a problem: she seemed to have a lot of strength now.

Just now, when she was looking for the vertical stick, she cleaved a vertical stick as thick as her arm in one go.

At first, she thought it was because the machete was more powerful. But when she was clearing the land, digging with a shovel was effortless for her. Lin Ying initially thought it was because she had gained weight.

However, when she easily lifted a large rock in her house, she realized that she seemed to be stronger than the average person.

Lin Ying suddenly remembered Mo Zi. She looked at her hands in disbelief. What was this? Mo Zi had taken away her spatial ability and was now using her physical strength to give it back to her?

Lin Ying couldn't help but smile at this idea, and then continued with her work.

Although she wasn't very familiar with growing vegetables, she knew about traditional Chinese medicine. It's best not to sow seeds immediately after clearing the land. Let it dry for a few days to kill any insects in the soil. If possible, it's best to sprinkle some wood ash on it.

Lin Ying knew that people here burned firewood, but she didn't know if there was any wood ash in this house.

It was already getting dark, so Lin Ying packed her things to prepare dinner.

Fortunately, there were a few eggs, flour, half a cabbage, and seasonings in the kitchen. Lin Ying guessed that these were leftovers from Zhao Si's cooking at home.

She didn't pick and choose, and simply made a bowl of noodles with these ingredients to finish her dinner.

After it got dark, Lin Ying went back to her room.

Lin Ying woke up before dawn the next day. To be precise, Lin Ying realized she had insomnia, and it wasn't until midnight that she finally gave herself an injection to fall asleep.

Even so, she started to stir. She pricked herself with needles several times throughout the night.

The next morning, Lin Ying first collected the wood ash from the stove. She planned to let it dry outside for another day, then spread the wood ash tomorrow, and after turning the soil, she should be able to sow the seeds.

Lin Ying is no longer the person she used to be; she knows this era is cutthroat. Especially since she's not very good at interacting with people now, Lin Ying has decided to minimize contact with others to avoid making mistakes.

She didn't know when Zhao Si would return, but she hoped he would come back soon because she had many questions to ask him and many things she needed him to do.

She's home alone now. She had porridge for breakfast and stir-fried the leftover cabbage.

Lin Ying was surprised that she couldn't eat all of this normally, but now it wasn't enough for her. Unfortunately, there were no steamed buns at home, so Lin Ying made noodles and ate a large bowl before she was full.

She didn't realize it yesterday, only that she was hungry because she had done a lot of work. Now she realizes that she has more energy and is eating more.

I wonder if Zhao Si would still want her to live here if he knew how much she could eat.

Grandpa had previously told her not to withdraw foreign currency. She doesn't have any money on her now, and if she relies entirely on Zhao Si to support her, wouldn't he be unhappy?

Thinking this through, Lin Ying decided to do something so that Zhao Si wouldn't feel cheated.

"Is Commander Zhao's family home?"

At first, Lin Ying didn't react and correct herself, until someone outside called out, "Zhao Qinghuai's wife, are you home?"

Lin Ying then realized that the people outside were calling her.

Lin Ying rushed out of the kitchen, and sure enough, it was Li Yue'e from next door.

Upon seeing Lin Ying, Li Yue'e didn't expect Lin Ying to reply. Instead, she said, "Commander Zhao isn't home, is he? You've just arrived, so you probably don't know anything. Have you had breakfast?"

Lin Ying nodded and pointed to her home, indicating that she had already eaten.

Li Yue'e breathed a sigh of relief: "Well, we need to fetch water from the river in front of us. I'm going over there now, do you want to come with me?"

Upon hearing this, Lin Ying immediately nodded. Seeing that Li Yue'e was holding a carrying pole and two wooden buckets, Lin Ying remembered that there was a similar one next to the water bottle in the kitchen, so she immediately ran back and took it out as well.

Seeing Lin Ying like this, Li Yue'e felt very complicated.

Knowing that Lin Ying was the daughter of a capitalist, she originally didn't want to get too close to her, but yesterday her husband talked her through with his ideas.

"If there really were a problem with Commander Zhao's family, would they have passed the political vetting? Although it would have an impact, the fact that they got married at this juncture shows that the problem isn't too serious. Besides, your husband will be working alongside Commander Zhao in the future, so there's no way he can avoid it. Our family has a good class background, and it's just a matter of neighbors helping each other out; nobody can say anything about it. If anyone does say anything, your husband will have a point!"

Li Yue'e knew what her husband meant: he wanted her to help Commander Zhao's family so that Commander Zhao wouldn't have any worries. If Commander Zhao was doing well, it would be easier for her husband to do his job.

Military wives need to be ideologically aware.

Besides, this girl doesn't seem unpleasant.
