Chapter 72 Dereliction of Duty

Several older children came over to help Lin Ying hold the cart, and Lin Ying started moving the cans. Just as Lin Ying was about to move the big can, a pair of bright red hands covered in chilblains were stretched out in front of Lin Ying.

Lin Ying paused, then grabbed those hands, only to see that not only their hands, but also their faces were frostbitten.

Lin Ying put down those hands and ran to another guard. Without permission, she pulled his hands out of his gloves as well. His fingers were frozen like little carrots, and the backs of his hands were covered in frostbite. Like the soldier, his face was also frostbitten.

Lin Ying put the gloves back on for everyone before walking over and asking, "Are all your hands like this?"

The soldier then understood what Lin Ying was doing and chuckled, "It's nothing, I'm used to it."

Lin Ying didn't say anything, but after putting the things down, she left with the children.

Just as Lin Ying was leaving, a military vehicle pulled up from outside. The people inside saw from afar that Lin Ying had put her things down and was leaving. So they stopped the vehicle at the gate and got out.

"Who was that just now? A villager from nearby?"

Upon seeing that it was their division commander, the soldier quickly saluted: "Greetings, sir. Reporting, sir. That was our regimental commander's wife. She came to bring him some food."

Liu Fajin raised an eyebrow: "Who is your regimental commander?"

The soldiers dared not be careless and immediately replied, "Reporting to the commander, we are the regimental commander, Zhao Qinghuai."

Liu Fajin exclaimed, "Oh, it's that kid. What's wrong? Is the food in the regiment bad? Is he cooking for himself?"

The soldier fell silent.

Liu Jinfeng didn't expect him to reply. He came here for Zhao Qinghuai: "Alright, help me put the things in my car, I'll take them to him. I want to see how this kid explains himself to me."

Liu Jinfa came because someone reported Zhao Qinghuai for abandoning his post.

It's important to know that deserting one's post can have very serious consequences in the military if the offense is deemed serious.

However, he also had a medal to commend Zhao Qinghuai's wife for contributing food and providing medicine prescriptions to the troops, and another award for the successful development of a table saw based on the blueprints provided by Zhao Qinghuai's wife.

What those below didn't know, Liu Jinfeng knew that Zhao Qinghuai had come here to hone his skills. He was a lateral transfer from an elite unit, someone favored by those above. He would definitely be transferred again in the future.

If something happens to someone here, who knows what might happen.

It just so happens that things all come together at once, and he happened to be here, so he can take this opportunity to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The three jars were placed on the seat next to him. The fragrance inside them forcefully entered his nose.

Liu Jinfeng even saw the guards in front of him swallowing hard.

"Zhao Qinghuai's wife is quite skilled; there's definitely meat in it!"

He sniffed, then confirmed, "Roe deer! It's definitely roe deer meat inside! Does this kid eat this well every day?"

The guard in front chuckled, "Whether it's good or not, I've never smelled anything so fragrant. It didn't smell this good at any of those banquets you attended before."

As they spoke, the two arrived at the regimental commander's office.

Zhao Qinghuai and Wang Shan were sitting inside warming themselves by the fire when they heard the commotion outside, so they came out.

Liu Jinfa saw Zhao Qinghuai gesturing to him: "The things your wife gave you in the car, unload them!"

Zhao Qinghuai immediately saluted, but was very suspicious as to why the gift Lin Ying had given him was in the division commander's car. However, his hands moved swiftly.

When Zhao Qinghuai saw the two jars of meat sauce, he knew they were meant for him to share with the rest of the group.

A slight smile involuntarily crept onto his lips.

Wang Shan came over to help, and together with the guard, the three of them put the three jars in the office.

Liu Jinfeng sat there, waiting for them to finish their work, before throwing the letter of complaint at Zhao Qinghuai: "Take a look, and explain to me what happened."

After reading it, Zhao Qinghuai said directly, "Reporting to the commander, there is nothing to explain. I am willing to accept the punishment."

Wang Shanyi immediately recognized it as a whistleblower letter and quickly took it to examine it carefully.

He immediately explained to Zhao Qinghuai, "Commander, there's a misunderstanding here."

Liu Jinfeng was furious at Zhao Qinghuai's appearance, but luckily Wang Shan provided a breakthrough: "Speak, what misunderstanding is there?"

Wang Shan hurriedly explained, "Commander Zhao just arrived here and doesn't know this place very well yet. In principle, commanders and above don't have patrol duties. He just arrived, and because the farm and forestry station are quite busy, the troops have all been sent over to help."

This month's patrol is the third regiment's first since Regiment Commander Zhao took office.

Then we encountered the night blindness issue. We documented it very carefully in the report; if it weren't for Commander Zhao and his wife, half of our unit would be in a semi-rest state, practically paralyzed.

Wang Shan wanted to say more about Zhao Qinghuai and Lin Ying's treatment for night blindness, but Liu Jinfeng interrupted him:

"Don't talk about those things, I know those. Just talk about the contents of the whistleblower letter."

Wang Shan wasn't annoyed and said with a smile, "That's what I'm talking about. Because everyone's eyesight was poor at the beginning, Commander Zhao and I had to join the patrol. Especially Commander Zhao, who patrolled for three consecutive nights, and during the day he also had to go up the mountain to hunt and go to the city to purchase medicinal herbs."

Seeing that Liu Jinfeng was getting impatient, Wang Shan changed the subject:

"Now that everyone's eyesight has improved, patrols can proceed normally. Those at the regimental level and above can go home and sleep normally at night."

However, Commander Zhao was worried, so he stayed here every night instead of going home.

He went home in the middle of the night because he was worried about his wife. How can that be considered desertion? If this counts as desertion, then what about other regiments that aren't on duty at night? Deserters?

Upon hearing this, Liu Jinfeng breathed a sigh of relief: "Alright, since that's how it is, you can write a written explanation, and I'll take it back to shut those people up."

Wang Shan immediately said, "Commander, I wrote the written explanation report and sent it to you that same day."

The guard standing nearby also reminded him, "Yes, Commander, I remember you also scolded them a few times, saying that these people have nothing better to do than submit reports for everything. You said they would have to submit reports every time they went to sleep with their wives or even just to go to the toilet."

Upon hearing this, Liu Jinfeng immediately thought of something: "That makes things even easier. Once this is resolved, there are other things to do. Xiao Liu, bring the things from the trunk."

The guard immediately saluted and went to get the items.

Zhao Qinghuai and Wang Shan exchanged glances. They didn't seem to have made any other mistakes, did they? Was there something else going on?
