Chapter 8 Going Up the Mountain to Dig for Wild Vegetables

Having made up her mind, Lin Ying waited with great ambition for Li Yue'e to call her.

"Hey sis, are you there?"

Hearing Li Yue'e calling, Lin Ying quickly grabbed the vegetable basket and small hoe she had prepared and went out the door.

Seeing Lin Ying like this, Li Yue'e found it inexplicably funny, but she didn't know why.

Li Yue'e knew that the others didn't want to be with Lin Ying, so she didn't want to cause any unpleasantness and didn't invite anyone else along this time.

Instead, she brought her two sons with her.

She and Lin Ying dug for wild vegetables, while their two sons collected dry branches.

Although it had only been half a day, Li Yue'e had already gotten used to Lin Ying's silence.

To be honest, although it was a bit awkward at first to have only her talking, now that there's someone there listening to you the whole time, and their eyes are always bright when you look at them, it means they've been listening to you. It's actually a pretty good feeling.

At least she's better than the kind of person who argues back every time you say something.

"We can just dig in the mountains around here. We can't go into the mountains behind here, there are bears there."

Lin Ying quickly wrote down the question she wanted to ask: "Can the trees here be cut down?"

"Sure, only military dependents live around here. Everyone else lives near the town, a bit far from here. But don't worry, our troops patrol here and come by. It's very safe."

By the way, it gets cold here starting in September and doesn't warm up until next April. If you have time, you should stock up on plenty of timber. The winters here can be deadly.”

Lin Ying wrote it down in her notebook before starting to work with Li Yue'e.

She also learned a lot of useful things, such as the wood; as long as she could get it back, she could take whatever she wanted. Not only that, but things from the mountains didn't have to be confiscated. Whatever family took from the mountains, they considered their own.

This is a military dependents' housing compound, not a commune. In a commune, everything belonged to everyone, and at least you could get grain as long as you worked. In the housing compound, there was nowhere to earn work points, and because the location was too remote, there weren't many jobs to be assigned. It certainly wouldn't be enough to live on the men's wages alone, so the military dependents were allowed to find their own food in the mountains.

Of course, if the troops obtained something by hunting in the mountains, then it would naturally be distributed uniformly by the troops.

Hearing this, Lin Ying felt much happier. It wasn't that she was stingy and didn't want to share the food; it was just that she had a big appetite, and if the food was divided like this, she might not have enough to eat.

Now that she knows she can find food on the mountain, she feels much more at ease. At least she can eat less of Zhao Si's food in the future. And he won't kick her out just because she eats so much.

She wasn't sure how long she would stay here. Zhao Si left in such a hurry... well, that didn't sound quite right.

Anyway, she's not sure what kind of deal Zhao Si made with her grandfather, and everything will have to wait until he comes back.

Before that, she simply followed the plan of finding food in the mountains to be self-sufficient. She would worry about the rest later.

Having made up her mind, Lin Ying seriously began digging for wild vegetables. There were plenty of good things on the mountain, including wild vegetables, wild wood ear mushrooms, and various kinds of mushrooms. Before long, Lin Ying's basket was full.

After pointing it out to Li Yue'e, Lin Ying went to gather firewood.

She felt her basket was a bit too small, and she didn't have any other baskets at home, so while gathering firewood, she also collected some rattan, planning to weave a larger basket so she could come up the mountain to forage for food later.
