Chapter 91 Going to the Forest Farm to Learn

The farm commander chuckled: "Don't ask me about that. I'll report it up, but the specific decisions regarding rewards and such will have to be made by your side."

Zhang Shanlin chuckled. This commander was notoriously cunning; he knew he couldn't get any information out of him.

Ignoring his polite words, Zhang Shanlin told the farm commander the purpose of his visit.

Upon hearing that Lin Ying was going there to learn the techniques and make irrigation tools, the farm commander said anxiously, "What are you waiting for? Let's go, I'll go make a call right now."

They got the farm commander's phone number. The main reason was that Lin Ying needed to be transported from the border defense headquarters to the forest farm. As everyone's granary, the farm's authority was more substantial.

Sure enough, the matter was settled in less than half an hour.

Tell Lin Ying to go directly to the forest farm for training tomorrow.

Afterwards, Zhang Shanlin took Lin Ying back to the compound.

Everyone in the family compound had just returned from the fields and was asking questions about irrigation techniques.

Lin Ying told everyone she was going to study for half a month, and everyone was very happy when she came back with the knowledge. These past few days, everyone had been planting medicinal herbs and knew how tiring it was to carry water; if they had new irrigation technology, it would be much more convenient.

No one thought Lin Ying was shirking her duties; they only thought she was helping everyone.

Back home, Lin Ying sat down and began writing down the precautions for the medicinal herbs, and then, how to properly dig the irrigation ditch. Lin Ying had been to the countryside with her grandfather, and her youngest son had also grown up in the countryside.

She had seen irrigation ditches for watering fields. But when it came to crossing a road, she figured she could simply use the principle of communicating vessels to build an underground irrigation canal.

Lin Ying drew out the requirements for the irrigation canal. This canal was crucial; the other canals all sloped down to the river. This one, however, needed to be raised so that water could flow from one end to the other.

After finishing the blueprints, Lin Ying prepared the medicinal herbs. She then clearly recorded the usage methods and contraindications. She even noted that the herbs could only be used in the base's medicinal fields, and their use elsewhere was none of her business.

The medicinal herbs Lin Ying used to repel the insects were poisonous. For self-protection, Lin Ying used carbon paper when writing, making one copy and printing it out. She sealed the photocopy, along with the carbon paper, in an envelope. She would pass through a town on her way to the forest farm tomorrow, and she would mail the letter to herself from the town's mailbox.

Lin Ying was busy until midnight before she finally finished organizing all these things.

The next day, Lin Ying packed a lot of things.

Although the tiger family had left, they would occasionally bring prey at night to give Lin Ying water.

When the snow melted, Lin Ying had no choice but to turn all the meat into cured meat or meat sauce. Zhao Qinghuai took a lot with him when he left, and Lin Ying still had quite a bit left.

She brought a small can and two canned food jars with her. In addition, she also brought her own food rations.

Lin Ying knew she had a big appetite, and that if she went, some people might go hungry. She was scheduled to stay there for half a month, so she brought a bag of mixed grain noodles and half a bag of rice.

In addition, there was kimchi made with pickled radishes and cabbage.

It's a time of transition, and things aren't going well anywhere.

After putting all the ingredients into her basket, Lin Ying also brought a change of clothes, her own toiletries, and a quilt with sheets and blankets.

Although she has the space, the surface things must be done well.

The next day, when Zhang Shanlin came to see Lin Ying off, he saw that Lin Ying had brought a basket and a woven bag, and couldn't help but laugh: "Comrade Lin Ying, you're going to be gone for ten days or so, not a dozen months or even a dozen years. Do you need to bring so much stuff?"

Lin Ying smiled and said, "I have a big appetite. We're going there to learn skills, so we can't let them teach us techniques and give us food subsidies at the same time."

Zhang Shanlin gave Lin Ying a thumbs up: "As expected of a college student, her ideological awareness is excellent."

That's right, Lin Ying has a university degree, which is extremely rare in this era. After the establishment of the Traditional Chinese Medicine University in Shanghai, her grandfather was hired as a special lecturer by that school.

Because Lin Ying had a good memory and learned quickly, she graduated from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the age of sixteen.

Lin Ying's file contains this information, so Zhang Shanlin naturally knows it.

Lin Ying handed over everything she had prepared all night to Zhang Shanlin. Zhang Shanlin glanced at it and was overjoyed:

"I was just saying that Comrade Lin Ying has a high level of ideological awareness, and she really is extraordinary. I was thinking that once you get there, we would have to call you if we encountered any problems here. I didn't expect that you would have thought of all the problems in advance. Great, this is really good. With these, everyone will know how to get the job done."

After saying that, Zhang Shanlin carefully put the things away.

"Let's go, I'll take you to the forest farm."

Upon arriving in town, Lin Ying suggested buying some pastries for Master Amu. Zhang Shanlin thought this was a good idea, since he felt obligated to help him, and Lin Ying might be able to learn a lot from him this way.

Zhang Shanlin also had something to do, so he let Lin Ying go by herself, and they would meet up later.

Lin Ying first put the letter into the mailbox in front of the supply and marketing cooperative, and then went inside to buy things.

The supply and marketing cooperative was still crowded. However, because of the significant difference in Lin Ying's appearance before and after, the sales staff at the cooperative had a deep impression of her, and everyone treated her very politely every time she came.

Because they also knew that Lin Ying was willing to spend money on things.

Just like now, Lin Ying not only bought a sponge cake, but also two pairs of gloves, and a bag of tea.

These days, besides tea sellers, only a few people with some power can afford to drink tea. She was a military wife, so the man who could accompany her to the military must be an officer.
