Chapter 7 [Would you rather talk to the enemy than to me?]
"Ah... I forgot to give my lunch to Mr. Koyasu!" My wife, Sayuri, stood in front of the shop where her future boyfriend, who might just be in unrequited love, worked, her mind racing. She brainstormed for a long time. When she came to her senses, she realized she was still holding the lunch she had made.
Like the last straw that broke the camel's back, the girl's eyes, adorned with cosmetic contact lenses, suddenly dimmed. A mist gathered in her eyes, a dampness thickening in them. Her delicately painted red lips were tightly pursed, revealing an expression that looked as if she might burst into tears any second.
The people in the store were sent back to work by the store manager, but due to human nature of watching gossip, no matter how hard the clerks focused on their work, they still kept some of their attention on the people outside the door.
When they saw Zi Anliang leaving, the shop assistants had already sighed in their hearts. They didn't know what was going on with this new temporary worker. He was a good person in every other aspect, but his attitude towards his girlfriend was so...hard to evaluate.
At this moment, noticing the girl's dejected look, the onlookers' feelings of pity overflowed. If it weren't for the meager salary, someone would have rushed out to comfort the child.
Perhaps because so many people in the store were paying attention to the relationship between my wife, Sayuri, and Koyasu Ryo, the store manager was drawn into the atmosphere, and a gloomy air snorted through his nose. He dropped the documents in his hand, stood up from his office chair, and rushed out of the store's rare office.
Most of the shop assistants focused their attention on work and my wife Sayuri - well, they had to admit that they focused more on my wife Sayuri, and work was just a side job.
In short, the consequences were obvious. They didn't even notice the manager storming out of the store. It wasn't until the grumpy manager said something to my wife, Sayuri, in front of the staff, which made the tearful little cat smile again, that they started to worry about their jobs.
Hopefully, the store manager didn't notice they were distracted before he left.
The middle-aged store manager was usually serious in front of his employees, and whenever he spoke, it seemed his only words were to urge them to work. However, everyone in the store knew that the manager was a typical good person with a cold heart but a warm heart.
Amidst the varying attention of the shop assistants, the usually talkative manager seemed a bit embarrassed when faced with the young woman. He scratched the back of his head, unsure where to put his hands. He then seemed to gesture towards the store.
The girl, who looked gorgeous with makeup, followed his movements and glanced inside the store. She gave an awkward but polite smile, apologized and thanked the store manager, said goodbye, and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
The clerk sighed in regret, only to hear a similar sound echoing throughout the store. At first, thinking his own sigh was too loud, he quickly covered his mouth, exchanging a bewildered glance with his colleague who had done the same.
"Don't feel sorry. The girl is here just to see Zi'an-kun and she didn't even want to come in." The store manager walked in and took in all the employees' little movements. With a few words, he dispelled the irrelevant personnel's delusions.
On the other side, my wife Sayuri ran a distance towards home, looking at the lunch box in her hand, she felt a little unwilling after all.
[How about trying to send it to Mr. Koan again...?]
My wife Sayuri doesn't know where Ryo Koyasu lives, so usually she goes to the store where Ryo Koyasu works to wait for him, or Ryo Koyasu takes the initiative to find her at the milk tea shop.
But this time...
Maybe it's there.
Sauri's mind flashed back to the image of Ryo Koyasu looking toward the alleyway, the same direction he'd left in. Although she didn't immediately enter that alleyway, she instinctively felt that Ryo Koyasu had taken a detour to avoid the eyes of others, including her.
Theoretically speaking, the other party had deliberately taken a detour to prevent her from seeing him enter the alley. My wife Sayuri should have been "sensible" and pretended that she knew nothing and just continued to live her own life.
But my wife Sayuri is not willing to give up!
How could she accept this? She didn't know if she was attractive, nor did she know what kind of woman Zi Anliang liked. But because she didn't know, she couldn't find a way to improve herself!
Even if Zi Anliang doesn't like her style anyway, she can't get the position herself, but she can still help screen the "candidates". Knowing more about them will help the screening be more accurate.
After such wild thoughts, my wife Sayuri suddenly felt a surge of motivation from somewhere and turned around to walk back the way she came.
This time, she walked straight past the shop where Zi Anliang worked, stopped at the entrance of the dim alley, and stuck her head out to observe.
The main road was brightly lit, but just around the corner, the alley was pitch dark. The two intersecting roads seemed to extend in different dimensions.
She swallowed and touched the Zhufu Jingguang pendant hanging around her waist. The soft touch of the doll seemed to give her some courage, and the young woman took a step, and then another, toward the alley.
As darkness enveloped her, she thought she would be too frightened to take another step, defeated by the darkness and forced to retreat into the alley. But that person had walked in the darkness for four years and eventually left in the darkness as well. How could she, who loved that person so much, just give up so easily?
What she is pursuing is the shadow of that person in real time.
The third step, the darkness before me faded. In the alley, garbage bags were piled cluttered along the wall, accompanied by a faint stench. The road, which still had room to walk, twisted and turned into a darker end.
As far as the eye can see, there seems to be no fork in the road where we can turn.
The exquisite little leather shoes are paired with a pearly bow, and the ribbon trembles with every step, like the wings of a butterfly ravaged by wind and rain, a contradiction of being fragile yet strong.
It had come to this point, and she no longer wanted to turn back. If she left now, she would no longer have the courage to stand in front of Zi Anliang.
Although these two things are completely unrelated, Agatsuma Sayuri forced them together, equating entering the alley with pursuing "love" in her mind.
Her nose seemed numb, and even the foul smell lingering at the tip of her nose could not affect her determination. She tried to ignore the unknown liquid flowing out of the garbage dump, and tried not to let her shoes step into the puddle, walking towards the deeper part with one foot deep and one foot shallow.
The bad condition only lasted for a period of time at the beginning. After going deeper, perhaps because it was inconvenient to throw away the garbage, or perhaps the garbage collection point was in that area, there were no more dirty-looking roads after passing it.
A few steps further in, the sound of someone talking could be heard faintly. My wife Sayuri didn't even know if it was someone she knew, but just hearing the voice made her heart happy and she quickened her pace.
Her steps became faster and faster, and finally she started to jog in the alley with poor visibility.
I don't know how much distance there is, it vanished in an instant. Ignoring the several forking roads further down, I headed straight for the path from which the sound had come. Turning the final corner, the first thing I saw was a man with blond hair illuminated by an old-fashioned tungsten light. Not far from the blond was another person clad in black, even their hair was a gleaming black, darker, shinier, and straighter than my wife Sayuri's real hair beneath her wig.
When she didn't see the person she'd expected, Agatsuma Sayuri paused, the courage she'd been forced to maintain by the darkness vanishing the moment she saw the light. She hesitated, shivered, and clutched the pendant of Morofushi Kagemitsu tightly under the gazes of the two men, as if just touching the object symbolizing that person would bring her courage.
"That..." Before the other party could say anything, Agatsuma Sayuri mustered up all her courage. She didn't dare to delay, for fear that if a second passed, the strength she had accumulated with great difficulty would sneak away from somewhere.
"I might be lost, can I..."
The dark-haired man, standing on the border between darkness and light, perhaps heard Sayuki's voice, or perhaps simply spotted someone who shouldn't be there, but he began to advance towards Sayuki. Far above the average height of an adult male in the area, he could peer down at the rabbit that had strayed into danger. The woman, still unaware of the extent of her danger, stared at him with bewildered eyes, innocent, pitiful, and vulnerable.
"You shouldn't be here."
The man's figure blocked the dim light, casting a shadow over the woman, turning her brightly colored skirt into a dull gray. The air around them seemed to have taken on a new quality with his presence, becoming heavy and solid, as if transformed from a gas into a solid, making it difficult to deliver oxygen to the nose.
Agatsuma Sayuri felt like she was being watched by a predator, afraid to move. Even though her mind was screaming at her to move, her muscles seemed to have a mind of their own, tensing and stiffening, freezing in place, unable to budge.
"Ley."
My wife Sayuri was already declaring her own death and silently saying "My life is over" in her heart when a familiar voice sounded in the darkness, calling out a name that was familiar yet not so familiar to my wife Sayuri.
"Rye, rye whiskey. It's probably a code name or something, right? It can't be his real name. There's no "Detective Conan" in this world, yet someone still uses "Rye" as a code name, and it fits the image so well. What an ironic coincidence."
The man called Lei stopped, and then another sound of footsteps was heard, as if the footsteps were deliberately increased to attract someone's attention.
Agatsuma Sayuri only dared to move her eyes, looking for a gap in the shadow cast by Lei, and cast her gaze in the direction where the sound came from.
Sure enough, it was a familiar person, the one she was looking for. The man who perfectly matched the image of the two-dimensional male god she loved in her mind was slowly emerging from the darkness.
Because he had been hiding in deeper darkness before, he was not seen by the girl at first sight. But now, because of the girl's arrival, he took the initiative to walk to the place where the conflict between light and darkness was the most intense.
There has never been a moment like this when Agatsuma Sayuri feels that the undercover agent, Keimitsu Morifushi, should be like the current Ryo Koyasu, cold, dark and ruthless.
Zian Liang stopped Lei's action, but immediately turned back and glared at the blond man, his voice filled with obvious anger. "You don't think that just because Lei said 'Don't touch my woman', you can do that to my woman, do you, Bourbon?"
Agatsuma Sayuri felt only sadness in her heart as she listened to Ryo Koyasu saying the number of words that they could only say after spending a whole day together, with an attitude that he would never use in the past.
"What? Mr. Koan would rather talk to this scary guy than talk to me more normally?"
If Zhu Fujingguang heard the girl's inner voice at this moment, he would probably cry out in injustice: "In this dangerous time, is the only thing you care about that I talk more to others?"
