Episode 106: Standoff in the Rainstorm

Heartbreak and the truth on a stormy night

Night fell as dark as ink, and a torrential downpour threatened to engulf the world in endless darkness and chaos. Large raindrops pounded the ground, splashing up layers of water and forming a hazy curtain of rain. On the city streets, vehicles struggled through the rain, their dim headlights flickering in the rain like bewildered eyes.

Zhong Hua stood dejectedly in the rain, raindrops streaming down her face, her soaked hair clinging to her pale cheeks. In her hand, she gripped the USB drive inside the pink delivery box tightly, her knuckles white from the pressure. The shock of seeing the images on the USB drive, and the pop-up message on the computer, "They're getting engaged soon," felt like countless sharp needles piercing her heart, the pain almost unbearable.

“No, this can’t be true… there must be some misunderstanding…” Zhong Hua’s lips trembled as she murmured to herself. Her eyes were bloodshot, filled with pain and resentment. Rain blurred her vision, but she had only one thought in her mind—to find Ah Yu and get to the bottom of things. She couldn’t believe that their relationship was so fragile.

Finally, as if she had made up her mind, Zhong Hua took a deep breath and, ignoring the rain soaking her to the bone, ran wildly towards the brightly lit building. Rain splashed at her feet, and the howling wind tried to stop her, but she rushed forward relentlessly, as if that was her last hope.

As Zhong Hua rushed into the building, raindrops dripped from her clothes onto the gleaming marble floor, forming a small puddle. She was breathing heavily, her eyes scanning the corridor anxiously. Just then, she heard faint noises coming from the direction of the security department's interrogation room, and without hesitation, she ran towards that direction.

"Tell me! Is it true?!" Zhong Hua's voice was choked with sobs as she shouted desperately. She finally reached the interrogation room door, clutching the USB drive tightly in her hand as if it were her last lifeline.

Just then, the interrogation room door slowly opened. Lin Wanqing walked out gracefully, her high heels making each step elegant and confident. The diamond brooch on her shawl sparkled dazzlingly under the lights, almost blinding Zhong Hua.

Lin Wanqing slightly raised her chin, her eyes filled with a hint of smugness, yet also a touch of pity, as she looked at Zhong Hua. Then, she gently waved the gold-embossed bail letter in her hand and said in a leisurely tone, "Mr. Bai is innocent." She paused, deliberately drawing out her words, "After all, he is my...fiancé."

"Fiancé?" Zhong Hua's body trembled violently as if struck by lightning. Her eyes widened as she stared at Lin Wanqing in disbelief, her gaze filled with shock and anger. "No...it can't be...Ah Yu, say something! Tell her this isn't true!" Zhong Hua turned to look into the interrogation room, her eyes urgently searching for Ah Yu's figure.

Ah Yu walked out of the interrogation room, looking somewhat tired. A complex emotion flashed in his eyes—helplessness, pain, yet something he seemed to be deliberately hiding. He opened his mouth, as if to say something, but in the end, he simply lowered his head in silence.

"Ah Yu, why aren't you saying anything? We've been together for so long, were all those feelings just a lie?" Zhong Hua's tears flowed uncontrollably, mingling with the rain on her face. She took a step forward, wanting to get closer to Ah Yu, but Lin Wanqing subtly stepped aside to block her.

“Zhong Hua, don’t you understand? You and Ah Yu are from completely different worlds. Some things are far more complicated than you imagine,” Lin Wanqing said coldly, a hint of contempt in her eyes.

“I don’t care about anything complicated, I only believe in the feelings between Ah Yu and me. Ah Yu, look at me and tell me, tell me you don’t love me anymore. As long as you say it, I’ll leave right away!” Zhong Hua’s voice was almost pleading. She stared straight at Ah Yu, her eyes full of expectation.

Ah Yu slowly raised his head and met Zhong Hua's gaze. His lips moved, but his throat seemed to be choked by something, and he couldn't utter a single word. His heart was in turmoil, torn between his deep love for Zhong Hua and his helplessness and inability to control his own destiny as he was caught up in a complex conspiracy.

"Enough, Zhong Hua! Stop arguing here." Lin Wanqing interrupted impatiently. "I'm here to bail Ah Yu out today. If you know what's good for you, leave now."

"Lin Wanqing, what exactly did you do to him? Why does he listen to you?" Zhong Hua looked at Lin Wanqing angrily and questioned her.

"I didn't do anything. Ah Yu just came to terms with reality. This world isn't a place where you can survive on love alone," Lin Wanqing said with a cold laugh.

Just then, a flash of lightning illuminated the window at the end of the corridor, followed by a deafening clap of thunder. Zhong Hua could no longer bear the pain and anger in her heart. She let out a scream, a scream that, mixed with the sound of rain outside, was like a sharp blade piercing straight into Ah Yu's eardrums.

Ah Yu's body trembled slightly. His hands clenched into fists, his nails digging deep into his palms, leaving crescent-shaped marks. Looking into Zhong Hua's desperate eyes, he felt as if a million ants were gnawing at his heart.

“Zhong Hua…” Ah Yu finally managed to speak, her voice so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable.

"Stop talking! I don't want to hear it!" Zhong Hua interrupted him loudly, tears streaming down her face. "I hate you, Ah Yu! I hate you all!" With that, Zhong Hua turned and ran towards the exit of the building without a second thought.

"Zhong Hua!" Ah Yu instinctively wanted to chase after him, but Lin Wanqing stopped her. "Don't forget our agreement," Lin Wanqing said coldly.
