Chapter 1: Tracking the Shadow
When Ayu realized she was being followed, her heart leaped into her throat. She tried to remain calm and casually walked into the mall. The mall was bustling with people, and Ayu thought it was a perfect place to shake off her pursuer. She quickly went into the women's clothing section, weaving between the rows of racks, occasionally picking up a few items to try on, but her eyes remained constantly alert to her surroundings.
Seeing that she hadn't lost her pursuer, Ayu went into the jewelry section and lingered in front of various jewelry counters. Taking advantage of the crowd, she suddenly turned around and walked in another direction. Then she took the elevator to the top floor of the mall and quickly went down to the underground parking lot through the emergency exit.
After leaving the parking lot, she hailed a taxi and asked the driver to head west of the city. After driving for a while, she transferred to the subway, changing lines several times, and deliberately squeezed off at the busiest time of day to board another train.
To her despair, no matter what she did, the stalker was like an inescapable shadow, always following her at a leisurely pace. With the appointed time with the retired employee fast approaching, Ayu sighed helplessly, had no choice but to abandon her plans, and hailed a taxi back home.
Chapter Two: The Terrifying Note
Ayu opened the door to her home, where the silence was eerily quiet. She had just changed her shoes and stepped into the living room when her gaze was drawn to a note on the coffee table. Her hands trembled as she picked it up. It read: "Stop investigating, or you'll face the consequences." Those words seemed to carry a chilling coldness, sending a cold sweat down Ayu's back.
She looked around in fear, wondering if someone had broken in while she was away, a wave of dread washing over her. But after the initial shock, Ayu's eyes hardened. She knew she had come this far, and she couldn't give up halfway. She had to uncover the secrets of her past, the truths hidden in the past—she had a right to know.
"No matter who you are, I won't give up easily," Ayu gritted her teeth and silently vowed in her heart. She knew that the investigation ahead had to be much more careful and cautious; she couldn't be as reckless as before, or she might really be in dire straits.
Chapter Three: A Careful Plan
Ayu sat at her desk, took out paper and pen, and began to organize the clues she had and the resources she could use. She thought of some scattered information about past business disputes that she had found online before. Although it was not complete, it might provide a new breakthrough.
She decided to start by contacting the individuals mentioned in the reports, but not directly. Instead, she would try to find out about them indirectly. For example, she could find ordinary employees or business partners who had previously interacted with these people, and perhaps glean useful information from their casual remarks.
Ayu also thought of some of her old friends. Although they might not know about her background, they might be able to help in the process of finding clues, such as helping to find out information or providing some cover.
To ensure her safety, Ayu always disguises herself before going out, wearing a wig, sunglasses, and different styles of clothing to make herself look like a completely different person. She also prepares several spare phones specifically for contacting people who might be connected to the clues, to avoid being traced back to her real identity.
Chapter Four: An Unexpected Discovery
After several days of careful investigation, Ayu finally made an unexpected discovery. She learned from an aunt who had worked as a cleaner at one of the companies involved that many years ago, the company's senior management would often secretly receive mysterious guests. Each time these guests came, they would bring some documents, and the covers of the documents seemed to have a unique mark.
Based on her memory, Ayu felt that the sign looked somewhat similar to the sign on the gate of a villa in a photo from her childhood. She quickly went home, found the photo, and compared them carefully. She discovered that although there were some subtle differences, the overall style was very similar, which made her feel even more strongly that her background was closely connected to these mysterious people and events.
Following this clue, Ayu continued to dig deeper, inquiring through various channels about the meaning of the symbol. She learned that the symbol might be related to a mysterious organization that had long disappeared from public view. This organization seemed to have considerable influence in the business world back then, and had participated in many clandestine transactions and schemes.
Chapter 5: The Mysterious Visitor
Just as Ayu was thrilled with her new discovery and preparing to investigate the mysterious organization further, one evening, while she was organizing documents at home, she suddenly heard a knock at the door. Ayu's heart tightened, and she tiptoed to the door. Looking through the peephole, she saw a person standing there wearing a hat, whose face was obscured.
"Who is it?" Ayu asked, mustering her courage.
“Ayu, it’s me. Don’t be afraid. I know you’re investigating your background. I have important news to tell you.” A deep voice came from outside the door.
Ayu hesitated for a moment, then slowly opened the door. The man quickly slipped in, glanced warily outside, and then took off his hat. Ayu then realized he was a middle-aged man who looked somewhat weathered; she didn't recognize him.
"Who are you? How do you know I'm investigating my background?" Ayu asked warily.
The middle-aged man smiled slightly and said, "Who I am is not important. What is important is that I know key information about your background. However, you must promise me that no matter what you hear, you will not act rashly, otherwise you will really be in danger."
