A respite in a temporary refuge
I. Exhaustion and Confusion After Escaping
Night fell like a vast, black ribbon, pressing heavily over the city. Neon lights flickered in the darkness, outlining the city's bustling yet indifferent silhouette. Ayu and Lin Wanqing ran frantically through the narrow, dimly lit streets, the relentless footsteps and shouts of Gu Yanting's men close behind. They were like two frightened birds, each rapid breath filled with fear and tension.
Ayu held Lin Wanqing's hand tightly, the hand turning slightly white from the force. Lin Wanqing's hair flew wildly in the wind, and a corner of her skirt was torn, fluttering as she ran. They turned into alley after alley, their footsteps echoing in the silent night, as if the whole world consisted only of their rapid breathing and the shouts of their pursuers behind them.
Finally, after a thrilling chase, Ayu discovered a secluded little house. Hidden in a corner of an abandoned factory, the house was surrounded by overgrown weeds, its walls covered in mottled moss, like a corner forgotten by time. Without a second thought, Ayu pulled Lin Wanqing and quickly slipped inside.
Upon entering the hut, Ayu immediately turned and slammed the dilapidated door shut, using her body to block it. Lin Wanqing leaned against the wall, panting heavily, her chest heaving, her eyes still filled with the terror of her escape. The two remained silent, listening to the footsteps fading away outside, only relaxing their tense nerves slightly once they were certain they had temporarily shaken off their pursuers.
Ayu slowly released her grip on the door and turned around. A musty, decaying smell filled the small house. By the faint moonlight filtering through the cracks in the dilapidated roof, their eyes met. In that instant, a thousand words seemed to flow in that complex gaze. Ayu's eyes held worry for Lin Wanqing, relief at surviving the ordeal, and uncertainty about the future. Lin Wanqing's eyes, however, were filled with guilt and unease; she felt she had brought this undeserved disaster upon Ayu.
II. Undercurrents of Emotion in Silence
A silence spread between them, as if an invisible film enveloping them. Ayu quietly approached Lin Wanqing. By the moonlight, he saw a few beads of sweat clinging to her pale cheeks, strands of hair sticking to them. He instinctively reached out to smooth her hair, but hesitated, withdrawing his hand halfway through.
Lin Wanqing slightly raised her head, looking at Ayu's hesitant expression, and felt a pang of pain in her heart. "Ayu, I'm sorry, I've dragged you into this." Her voice trembled slightly, but it sounded particularly clear in the quiet little house. Ayu gently shook her head, "Don't say that, it's not your fault, Gu Yanting... he went too far." Ayu's tone was tinged with anger, and her fists clenched unconsciously.
Lin Wanqing bit her lip, tears welling in her eyes. "But, if it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been dragged into this mess. You and Zhong Hua..." Her voice trailed off as she spoke of Zhong Hua. A-Yu felt a pang of pain in his heart. Zhong Hua's image flashed through his mind, and the thought of the pressure Zhong Hua might be facing filled him with helplessness and guilt. "As for Hua Hua, I..." A-Yu was speechless, unsure how to express his feelings.
Silence fell between them again. The occasional cry of a night bird outside the hut added to the stillness and desolation. Ayu walked to the window and gazed at the pitch-black night through the broken pane. Moonlight spilled onto the ground, like a layer of silver frost, but it couldn't illuminate their uncertain future. Lin Wanqing watched Ayu's retreating figure, her heart filled with mixed emotions. She knew that because of this turn of events, her relationship with Ayu had become more complicated and delicate. The once pure affection was now mixed with too much helplessness and pain.
III. The Interweaving of Memory and Reality
After an unknown amount of time, Lin Wanqing broke the silence. "Ayu, do you remember when we were little? Back then, we were carefree in the village, playing together every day, running around in the fields..." Lin Wanqing's eyes softened, as if she were lost in memories of those beautiful times. Ayu turned around, a faint smile on her face. "Of course I remember. Those days were truly wonderful. We even made a wish under that old locust tree, promising to be best friends forever."
Mentioning the old locust tree, their thoughts seemed to travel back in time to that small village filled with laughter. On summer afternoons, sunlight filtered through the locust tree's dense foliage, casting dappled shadows. They played and frolicked beneath the tree, drawing their future plans on the ground with twigs. Those simple and pure joys stand in stark contrast to the complex and chaotic situation of today.
“But now, everything has changed.” Lin Wanqing sighed softly, a hint of desolation flashing in her eyes. Ayu walked to her side and patted her shoulder. “Although the situation is terrible now, as long as we face it together, there will always be a way.” Ayu tried to comfort Lin Wanqing, while also encouraging himself. However, he knew in his heart that the road ahead was full of thorns, Gu Yanting would not let them off easily, and he also needed to face and explain things to Zhong Hua.
Memories were both a solace and a torment at this moment. The beautiful memories reminded them of their past innocence and warmth, while the harsh reality pulled them back to the coldness of the present. Ayu and Lin Wanqing both understood that they couldn't remain immersed in the past forever; they had to come up with a solution as soon as possible.
IV. Confusion and Choices about the Future
"Ayu, what should we do next?" Lin Wanqing looked up, her eyes filled with helplessness and confusion. She saw Ayu as her only support at this moment. Ayu pondered for a moment, then slowly said, "First, we need to find a way to clarify the facts and not let Gu Yanting's conspiracy succeed. He bribed paparazzi to expose our relationship, causing Hua Hua and me to suffer so much malice. We must clear our names." Ayu's eyes revealed a firm determination.
