Dark clouds loom over the city
The afternoon sun, which should have been bright and warm, was obscured by layers of thick clouds, allowing only a few dim rays to barely pierce the city's skyscrapers. Zhong Hua sat in the hospital corridor, clutching her mother's medical record tightly in her hand. The complex diagnostic data on it felt like sharp blades, cutting into her heart. Her mother's condition was critical; every treatment was like a race against death. And now, the resources needed for that treatment hung like a Damocles' sword over her head, threatening to vanish at any moment.
Just then, Zhong Hua's phone rang abruptly, its shrill ringtone particularly jarring in the quiet hospital corridor. She glanced at the caller ID, her brows furrowing instantly—it was Gu Yanting. She took a deep breath and slowly answered the phone. Before she could speak, Gu Yanting's gloomy, smug voice came through: "Zhong Hua, you should know your mother's current condition very well. Treatment resources are entirely at my disposal. If you want her to continue her treatment peacefully, leave Ah Yu and stop interfering in our affairs."
Zhong Hua's hand trembled violently, and she almost dropped her phone. She bit her lip, her anger and helplessness churning within her like a surging tide, nearly engulfing her. "Gu Yanting, how could you be so despicable! My mother is innocent, she's already so ill, and you still won't let her go!" Zhong Hua's voice trembled, a tremor born of anger and despair.
"Hmph, innocent? No one in this world is innocent. If you don't agree, I guarantee that your mother's treatment will be completely interrupted within three days. You know what the consequences will be." Gu Yanting's voice was devoid of warmth, as if it came from a cold hell.
Inner struggle
After hanging up the phone, Zhong Hua sat there blankly, staring at the hospital wall. Her mind kept replaying the image of her mother's increasingly frail face lying in the hospital bed and Ah Yu's warm and resolute smile. She loved Ah Yu; this love had taken deep root after countless trials and tribulations. But her mother was her closest person in the world, who had raised her with such hardship, and now, with her life hanging by a thread, how could she bear to watch her mother lose her last hope because of her choice?
If she agreed to Gu Yanting's offer, she would have to push away her own love, a pain that felt like her heart was being torn apart. But if she didn't agree, her mother's life would be in grave danger. Zhong Hua clutched her hair tightly, caught in an extremely agonizing decision. She felt like a moth trapped in a spider's web, and no matter which way she struggled, she would only sink deeper.
After an unknown amount of time, Zhong Hua got up and, with heavy steps, slowly walked out of the hospital. The outside world was bustling with traffic, people busy with their lives, but she felt as if she were in another world, a world full of pain and struggle. She went to the park where she and Ah Yu used to frequent, sat on that familiar bench, and tears welled up in her eyes.
Difficult test
That night, Zhong Hua returned home to find Ah Yu busy in the kitchen. Upon seeing her return, Ah Yu immediately smiled with concern: "You're back! How was your day at the hospital? I made your favorite dishes." Looking at Ah Yu's gentle smile, Zhong Hua felt a pang of pain in her heart and almost blurted out Gu Yanting's threat, but she swallowed the words back down.
During the meal, Zhong Hua kept her head down, deliberately avoiding Ah Yu's gaze. Ah Yu noticed her unusual behavior, put down her chopsticks, and gently took Zhong Hua's hand: "Zhong Hua, is something on your mind? Don't hide it from me, let's face it together." Zhong Hua looked up at Ah Yu's sincere eyes, her heart filled with conflict. She hesitated for a moment, then whispered, "Ah Yu, how about we...we separate for a while?"
Ah Yu was stunned, as if he couldn't believe his ears. He held Zhong Hua's hand tightly and asked anxiously, "Why? Zhong Hua, is there something I did wrong? Tell me, I'll change." Zhong Hua turned her head away, forcing back tears, and said, "There's no reason, I just feel that we're not suitable to be together. Too many things have happened recently, and I want to be alone."
Ah Yu looked at Zhong Hua, her eyes filled with pain and confusion: "Not suitable? We've been through so much together, how can you say we're not suitable? Zhong Hua, is there something you can't tell me? Tell me!" Zhong Hua bit her lip, her heart aching. She knew that revealing the truth now would only put Ah Yu in greater danger. She hardened her heart, pulled her hand away from Ah Yu's, and stood up: "Don't ask anymore, I said we're breaking up, and that's final!" With that, she turned and ran back to her room, leaving Ah Yu sitting alone at the dining table, her face filled with bewilderment and pain.
The truth is gradually being revealed
Over the next few days, Zhong Hua deliberately avoided A Yu. She spent every day at the hospital with her mother, watching her mother's condition, which was temporarily stable due to treatment, and felt a mix of emotions. Meanwhile, A Yu searched everywhere for Zhong Hua. He couldn't believe that Zhong Hua would suddenly stop loving him; there must be some reason.
By chance, Ah Yu met Lin Wanqing. Seeing Ah Yu's haggard appearance, Lin Wanqing felt deeply sorry for her and asked what had happened. Ah Yu told Lin Wanqing about Zhong Hua's sudden proposal to break up. After hearing this, Lin Wanqing felt something was amiss and decided to investigate with Ah Yu.
After some twists and turns, the two finally discovered some clues. They found that Gu Yanting was secretly manipulating things, seemingly related to the medical resources for Zhong Hua's mother. Ah Yu's heart tightened; he immediately realized that Zhong Hua's suggestion to separate was likely due to Gu Yanting's threats.
Breaking the deadlock
Upon learning the truth, Ah Yu was frantic with worry. He decided he could no longer sit idly by and had to find a way to solve this problem, so that Zhong Hua wouldn't have to bear all of this alone. After discussing it with Lin Wanqing, they decided to first collect evidence of Gu Yanting's threats against Zhong Hua, and at the same time contact the police for help.
