Episode 213: The Rusty Car Bell at the Repair Shop

Echoes at the intersection of time

In the hustle and bustle of the city, there are always some corners that hide stories sealed by time. It was an ordinary afternoon, sunlight filtering through the dappled leaves and dappling the narrow street. Zhong Hua pushed his bicycle with a flat tire, slowly walking into an old alley. The alley was filled with an old yet familiar atmosphere, and the walls were covered with the marks of time, as if telling stories of the past.

Ayu followed quietly beside Zhong Hua, her eyes filled with curiosity and anticipation. This old alley was like an unknown treasure trove to them, waiting for them to uncover its secrets.

Zhong Hua's bicycle bumped along the rough road, making a slight noise. Finally, they found the repair shop in the alley. The repairman was an elderly man with gray hair. He sat on a small stool, surrounded by various repair tools. Seeing Zhong Hua push the bicycle in, the old man stood up, a kind smile on his face.

"Young man, what happened to your car?" The old man's voice, thick with local accent, seemed to echo from the depths of time.

"Sir, my tire is flat. Could you please take a look?" Zhong Hua said politely.

The old man nodded, skillfully flipped the bicycle over, and began checking the tires. At the same time, he reached into a box beside him, took out a spare bell, and handed it to Zhong Hua. "Take this bell and see, you might need it."

Zhong Hua took the bell and examined it carefully. The words "Xiangyang Middle School" were engraved on the bell, the characters were somewhat blurred, but the charm of yesteryear was still evident. He gently shook the bell, and a dull thud echoed in the air.

The dull thud was like a key, instantly unlocking the door to Ayu's memories. A hint of surprise and delight flashed in her eyes, "That sound...it sounds like the rhythm of the drums in Fenghuang Ancient Town!"

Ayu's thoughts instantly drifted back to her trip to Fenghuang Ancient Town. It was a peaceful night, the ancient town bathed in soft moonlight. They strolled along the cobblestone streets, the distant sound of drums echoing in their ears. The sound was steady and powerful, carried on the gentle breeze, as if telling the history and stories of the ancient town. Each drumbeat seemed to resonate in their hearts, immersing them in the charm of the ancient town.

As Zhong Hua listened to A Yu's description, he too was lost in memories. He seemed to see the ancient town of Fenghuang that night, the moonlight shining on the Tuojiang River, making it shimmer. And at that moment, the dull tinkling of the bell in his hand really did have a strange similarity to the rhythm of the night watchman's drum.

Curiosity drove them to further explore the secrets of the bell. Zhong Hua took out a handkerchief and carefully wiped away the rust on the bell. As the rust was gradually removed, some writing slowly appeared on the inside of the bell.

When the last trace of rust was wiped away, they were surprised to find that the inside of the bell was engraved with the names of a couple. The boy's handwriting was strong and vigorous, and Zhong Hua recognized it at a glance—it was exactly the same as the penmanship on his grandfather's account book.

“This… how can it be so similar?” Zhong Hua blurted out. He remembered his childhood, when his grandfather always wore reading glasses and meticulously recorded every income and expenditure in an account book. His grandfather’s penmanship was neat and powerful, full of the charm of time. And the handwriting on the bell in front of him, both in the direction of the strokes and the style of the font, was exactly the same as the handwriting in his grandfather’s account book.

Ayu also came over and was equally surprised when she saw the boy's handwriting. However, when her gaze fell on the little sun pattern the girl had drawn, she was even more astonished.

"This little sun is exactly the same as the drawing I made in my elementary school textbook!" Ayu exclaimed excitedly. She clearly remembered that when she was little, she would always secretly draw some small pictures in the corner of her textbook during class, and the one she drew most often was this little sun. That simple yet childlike drawing carries her beautiful childhood memories.

"What a coincidence!" Zhong Hua exclaimed. Looking at the name and design on the bell, a strange feeling welled up inside him. It was as if their family history, Ayu's childhood memories, and their wonderful experiences in Fenghuang Ancient Town were interwoven on this small bell. All these seemingly unrelated things were connected in a wondrous way at this moment.

The mechanic listened silently to their conversation, a mysterious smile playing on his lips. He didn't speak, but continued to focus intently on repairing the bicycle.

Ayu and Zhonghua held the bell as if it were a precious treasure. They tried to find more clues on the bell to unravel the mystery behind this strange coincidence. However, apart from the name and the pattern, there were no other obvious marks on the bell.

A gentle breeze blew through the alley, carrying the fragrance of flowers from afar. Ayu and Zhonghua stood there quietly, the bells in their hands shimmering softly in the sunlight. They were immersed in this magical atmosphere, their thoughts drifting along the river of time.

This little bell is like a messenger of time, tightly connecting their past and present. It allows them to feel the magic and beauty of time, and fills them with greater anticipation for the future. Perhaps, one day in the future, they will discover more secrets about this bell, and those stories hidden by time.

In this bustling city, this old alley, this bicycle repair shop, and this bell engraved with "Xiangyang Middle School" have all become unique and unforgettable memories in their lives. They will forever remain in Ayu and Zhonghua's hearts, becoming a beautiful chapter in their life story.

With the mechanic tightening the last screw, the bicycle was fixed. Zhong Hua paid and, together with A Yu, pushed the bike out of the repair shop. They didn't leave the alley immediately, but walked slowly along it, the bells on their hands occasionally ringing crisply. The sound echoed in the alley, like a whisper of time, telling of forgotten memories.

They knew the bell was just a small part of their lives, but the wonderful feeling it brought would remain forever in their hearts. In the days to come, whenever they recalled that afternoon, that old alley, and that bell, a warm and wonderful feeling would well up inside them. Because it was more than just a bell; it was a testament to a moment in their lives filled with surprise and emotion.
