Chapter 72: Almost Extinct Medicinal Herbs

Wen Guoer was preparing lunch when she looked up and saw Tang Zhan striding in.

"Why so fast? Isn't it urgent?" Wen Guoer put down the kitchen knife, wiped her hands, looked at him and asked.

Tang Zhan looked at her with a somewhat gloomy expression. He couldn't bear to leave his wife alone at home again after just returning.

He stepped forward, lowered his head, and took Wen Guoer's drooping hands, saying hesitantly, "Wife, I, I have to go."

He raised his head guiltily and met Wen Guoer's eyes, his eyes full of apology.

"We have a mission up there, so we have to leave soon."

Wen Guoer really didn't expect it to be so sudden. She broke free from his hand, turned her back, looked around aimlessly, and after calming down for a while, she said lightly:

"I just didn't expect it to be so soon." She turned around and looked up at him. "How long will it take this time?"

How could Tang Zhan not understand the grievance and reluctance in her eyes? He hugged her tightly in his arms, lowering his head on her shoulders: "Wife, I'm sorry."

There was guilt, helplessness, and even heartache in his voice.

Wen Guoer sorted out her emotions and regained her consciousness. Can you blame him?

This is his duty as a soldier, and it is also what she has to bear as a military wife! She looked up:

"I know you have rules, and many things are inconvenient to talk about. But could I prepare some self-defense medicine for you to take with you?"

"Okay." He nodded.

Wen Guoer pushed him away a little, wanting to see his face more clearly. She raised her eyes and asked, "What do you need? To stop the bleeding?"

Tang Zhan looked at his young wife, who looked worried and concerned for him. He pinched her little face and replied to her lovingly:

"If you have any detoxifying or anti-worming products, please give me some."

Wen Guoer knew that as a field force, they often had to operate in deep mountains and forests, so she didn't suspect anything and handed the unfinished work in the kitchen to him, then quickly went into the house to pack up.

She prepared hemostatic medicine, anti-inflammatory medicine, snake and insect repellent packs and ointments, and three antidote pills for her.

She had just prepared a detoxification pill recipe, but because there were not enough herbs, she only prepared three pills. However, after testing, she found that one pill could eliminate hundreds of toxins, and the side effects were very small and could be ignored.

This also strengthened her determination to study the elixir formula as soon as possible. The efficacy of the elixir formula in the ancient books is too powerful and cannot be compared with the present and future generations!

Although some Western medicines in later generations are quite effective, their side effects are also relatively large. They are like robbing Peter to pay Paul, and only treating the symptoms but not the root cause.

After Tang Zhan finished his meal, he put on his backpack and left.

He didn't look back, striding forward with great determination! But Wen Guoer could sense his reluctance...

Even after watching his figure disappear, Wen Guoer still stood at the door looking in the direction he left.

"Guo'er, is Tang Zhan going on a mission again?" Mrs. Wei walked out of the yard, glanced at the intersection, turned around and asked her.

"Yes, gone again!"

Wen Guoer sighed and spread her hands helplessly towards Mrs. Wei.

"Sister-in-law, is there a pharmacy nearby?"

Wen Guoer wanted to go to the pharmacy to check. The types of herbs she had were still too few. She needed different varieties of herbs to extract effective substances for experiments.

She also knew that although traditional Chinese medicine and herbal medicine were impacted during this period, pharmacies still existed with the support of the higher authorities.

"There's a medicine shop at the easternmost end of the commune," Mrs. Wei said, pointing in the direction of the shop. "They usually buy some medicinal herbs. I heard it was previously run by a wealthy landlord in this area, but was later taken over by the commune."

"I've got that in mind. Thank you, sister-in-law." After Wen Guoer thanked her, she turned around and was about to go back on her bike. She wanted to go over and take a look as soon as possible.

Sister Wei held her back and looked her up and down: "Guo'er, you're not feeling well, are you?" She raised her eyes and looked at her worriedly, "If you feel unwell, you must tell me. Tang Zhan is not at home, and you're pregnant, you can't let anything happen to you!"

Wen Guoer pursed her lips and smiled at her: "Sister-in-law, I'm really fine, I just want to see if there is any tonic."

After saying that, he said goodbye to Mrs. Wei and rode his bike to the pharmacy.

The pharmacy faces the street. It looks like a south-facing house in a courtyard, with the door facing the street.

It is the size of three rooms, with a counter in the middle entrance. An old man in his sixties wearing reading glasses is sitting at the counter, flipping through a book.

There is a pharmacy on the west side, and two single beds covered with white sheets on the east side. It seems that there are patients receiving treatment here normally.

"Are you here to buy medicine?" The old man pulled down his reading glasses, raised his eyes and looked at her and asked.

"Yes, old man, I want to ask, do we have these medicinal herbs here?" Wen Guoer took out the list and showed it to the old man.

Before coming, she had compiled a list of the medicinal herbs and quantities she had copied from ancient books, as well as those she knew about but did not have on hand.

The old man glanced at the list, looked up at her, put his glasses back on and checked it carefully.

"Miss, there are quite a lot of herbs on this list. Some of them are names I've never even heard of, let alone seen before! I wonder why, Miss, you want so many herbs...?"

The old man was puzzled. There were dozens of almost extinct herbs on the prescription, and only a handful of people knew about them. If he had not been the shopkeeper of the Zhou family for so many years, he might not have known about them!
