Chapter 45 Playing the victim
Sunlight streamed through the curtains.
Ruan Yi rubbed against the heat source in a daze.
It's the feeling of being completely enveloped in a warm yet firm embrace.
The girl had a long, slender leg between her legs, and she had found the most comfortable and perfect sleeping position she had ever had.
What a comfortable human-shaped body pillow!
Ruan Yi sighed comfortably, and was about to bury her face deeper into the warm crook of her neck when she suddenly froze.
Where did she get such a big pillow on her bed?
Suddenly opening my eyes, my gaze fell upon the handsome features so close to me.
Gu Zhi closed his eyes, his fair skin revealing faint blue veins in the sunlight, and his slightly drooping eyelashes cast a small shadow.
Ruan Yi could even feel the subtle sensation of his thigh muscles tightening and relaxing when she held them between her legs.
"Ah!" Ruan Yi recoiled violently as if she had been electrocuted, scrambling to separate herself from him.
Gu Zhi's eyelashes trembled, and he lazily propped himself up. His pajamas had a deep neckline and hung loosely on his shoulders.
It's a perfect picture of an incredibly handsome man getting up in the morning.
Ruan Yi swallowed hard, repeating the words to herself.
This is her brother. This is her brother. This is her brother.
"Sister's awake?" The man's voice had the characteristic huskiness of morning, with an indescribable allure.
Why are you in my room?!
Ruan Yi was both anxious and fierce, her face turning as red as an apple.
“My sister fell asleep by my bedside last night. I was worried she would catch a cold, so I carried her back to her room.”
A few strands of Gu Zhi's dark hair fell slightly messily across his forehead. He raised his eyebrows innocently, stared at Ruan Yi with moist eyes, and pursed his lips with a hint of grievance.
"I wanted to leave, but my sister kept holding me, and I couldn't break free. I didn't want to wake her up either..."
He could break the lock, kick the window, and couldn't escape his sister's embrace—all of this made perfect sense to Gu Zhi.
The man spoke as if he were truly a pitiful little animal that had been wronged.
Ruan Yi choked. Her emotions yesterday were indeed quite turbulent. This was exactly the kind of thing she would do when she felt insecure.
But Ruan Yi still forced herself to remain calm and made accusations.
"Well, you don't need to get this close!"
Gu Zhi blinked innocently, then moved further to the edge of the bed, clearly about to fall off.
"I've already shrunk to the very edge."
The man looked down at the spot where Ruan Yi had bounced away; she was now just in the center of the bed.
"My sister kept snuggling into my arms and even put her leg..."
Before he could finish speaking, Ruan Yi interrupted him in a panic.
"Alright, I was wrong, stop talking!"
The man's lips curled up uncontrollably, but the triumphant smile vanished in an instant, replaced by an innocent puppy-like expression.
"My sister is so innocent and cute."
"If I had known... I would have gone even further."
After all, the soft girl in his arms tried to break free several times after she fell asleep.
But every time she managed to break free even a fraction of an inch, the man's arms would tighten, pulling her into his embrace, his palms roaming freely over her soft flesh.
When the man's nose touched the hollow of her neck, he deliberately rubbed the sensitive spot with force until he felt her tremble helplessly.
He knew that the girl would throw a tantrum when she woke up tomorrow, but he was already in her arms, how could he bear to let go?
Then let him play the victim again; his sister will believe him no matter what.
Gu Zhi followed Ruan Yi downstairs.
The blush on the girl's earlobes lingered, making the smiles of those behind her deepen.
Gu Zhi tied on an apron and went into the kitchen. Soon, the dining room was filled with the sweet aroma of pumpkin and millet.
Before the problem is accurately identified, she must closely monitor her mother's diet.
However, she knew nothing about cooking, so the way to keep a close eye on her was to leave it to Gu Zhi to handle.
The door to her mother's bedroom was ajar, and Ruan Yi's fingertips, gripping the doorknob, were still trembling with lingering fear.
Pushing open the door, I saw Ruan Ying leaning against the headboard, her pale face still showing some fatigue, but it was clear that she had stabilized.
"Mom!" Ruan Yi practically jumped over and buried her head in her mother's arms.
"Mom, are you alright? Is there anything else that's bothering you?"
Ruan Ying looked at her daughter's reddened eyes and patted her back with her palm. "I'm sorry, my baby, Mommy scared you yesterday."
As soon as she finished speaking, Ruan Yi's eyes reddened, her nose turned red, and her eyes were full of tears.
"What does this have to do with Mom! It's all the fault of that bastard who drugged her! I'll only feel at ease if Ah Zhi takes care of all three meals from now on!"
Ruan Ying lowered her eyes and chuckled softly, gently rubbing her daughter's head, her eyes filled with helplessness and doting affection.
"You little rascal, how can that be? Wouldn't that make Ah Zhi a cook?"
Ruan Ying slowly began to explain her current thoughts and opinions to her daughter.
Hearing her guess, Ruan Yi frowned. Her mother thought the same thing as her: the drugging had nothing to do with the food.
So what exactly was the method of administering the drug?
"Regarding Xiaoyi's claim about the falsified reports, the first thing I did after waking up was to have someone check the hospital's archives. The three reports did indeed differ from the hospital's data; they were switched after I returned."
The suspects remain narrowed down to the Ruan family.
Just as Ruan Yi was about to ask further questions, her mother suddenly raised her hand to stop her, her expression so solemn it seemed as if covered in frost.
"I'll put my business aside for now."
Ruan Ying took a deep breath, her voice trembling slightly.
"What really triggered my emotional breakdown was that someone sent me a text message threatening your death."
Ruan Ying unlocked her phone with trembling hands and turned the anonymous message on the screen toward her.
The malicious content came into view. The sunlight outside the window was still bright, but Ruan Yi felt a chill creep up her spine from the soles of her feet.
"The police said that Ruan Zhengyi and Wang Yanqin had already boarded a ship to smuggle themselves out of the country. My mother also sent people to investigate, and the situation is true."
Ruan Ying dug her nails deep into her palms.
"Besides them, I can't guess who else could it be. Because of this information, I'm worried every second that someone might harm you, Xiaoyi. Before you came back safely, I..."
"What?" Ruan Yi asked in disbelief.
Actually, when she saw the sparse hair under the kidnapper's hood, compressed into a pancake shape, she was quite surprised.
She began to suspect that the other person was Ruan Zhengyi.
After all, he and his father are cut from the same cloth.
Clearly, catching the kidnappers is difficult, but completely changing the plot is even more difficult.
Ruan Yi forced a smile that looked more like a grimace and reached out to grasp her mother's icy hand.
"Mom, don't worry, let's not panic. I'll be careful in the future and this kidnapping will never happen again."
Seeing her mother's still anxious expression, Ruan Yi gently placed her mother's hand on her soft cheek to comfort her.
"Once the blood drug concentration and toxin screening test results come out, I will consult with the doctor to clarify things, and we will focus on getting better first."
Before Ruan Ying could respond, the door opened slightly, and the warm aroma of pumpkin and millet porridge wafted into the room.
Gu Zhi steadily held the porcelain bowl and gently placed the pumpkin and millet porridge on the bedside table. "Mom, are you hungry? Eat something first."
Just then, a "gurgling" sound came from Ruan Yi's stomach.
Ruan Ying smiled and told the siblings to go and fill their stomachs first.
Before Ruan Yi could respond, the man had already moved closer, his long arms encircling her waist and pulling the girl to his side.
Ruan Yi was pulled into his arms, her back pressed against the man's strong chest, and led out of the room.
"The most important thing now is to feed my sister."
