Chapter 85 Terrorist Attack
In the early morning, sunlight pierced through the thin mist and spilled onto the top-floor offices in the CBD.
Skyscrapers stand outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, but a low-pressure atmosphere permeates the room. Fu Jingchen sits behind his desk, his fingertips unconsciously tapping the surface.
The dark circles under his eyes were terrifyingly deep, and the whites of his eyes were filled with crisscrossing red blood vessels, clearly indicating that he had been unable to sleep all night.
The man arrived exceptionally early today, even before the cleaning lady.
The spacious office was empty except for his solitary figure, like a taut sculpture, his gaze fixed on the closed glass door.
A CEO who eagerly awaits his assistant's arrival would seem odd to others.
A knock came at the door.
When Assistant Li pushed the door open, he was almost knocked over by the oppressive atmosphere.
He glanced at the dark circles under his boss's eyes and his heart skipped a beat. This commotion was most likely related to Assistant Ruan.
Did they have a fight?
He dared not breathe, and quietly put down his coffee cup. He was about to give his daily report when the man stopped him with a look.
"Get out." The voice was unusually hoarse.
Assistant Li felt as if he had been granted a pardon and practically fled the scene.
Fu Jingchen picked up his coffee and took a sip. His brows furrowed instantly. It was the same familiar taste, the same usual method, but the bitterness on his tongue was just not quite right.
It's different from Ruan Yipao's.
The man stubbornly believed that only the cup she brewed could taste inexplicably sweet.
The phone rang abruptly, and the words "Medical Center" appeared on the screen.
"Mr. Fu! I'm so sorry!!"
The phone call came through the panicked English of a medical assistant.
"Mr. Fu Wang... he's gone! We can't find him anywhere, we've sent people to search, but... we've found nothing!"
Fu Jingchen's fingers tightened around his phone, his knuckles turning white. "Have you checked the flights?"
"We checked! There are no flight records under his name! It's like he vanished into thin air! We don't even... know if he's still alive."
The man muttered a curse under his breath, rubbing his throbbing temples, his irritation almost overflowing.
One problem after another.
He hung up the phone and threw it on the table with a dull thud.
Disappeared? Dead?
He twitched the corners of his mouth, revealing a cold smile.
That arrogant fool would never be willing to die.
He coveted things that didn't belong to him; his ambition outweighed his ability, yet his life was as fragile as paper.
Fu Jingchen looked at the glass door again, more urgently than before, as if urging something.
When Ruan Yi pushed open the office door, her expression wasn't much better.
Just as the girl was about to speak, her wrist was grabbed by a strong force.
Fu Jingchen stood up from behind his desk almost without hesitation, his calm demeanor completely gone.
The man gripped her shoulders gently but firmly, his gaze sweeping over her like a scanner.
From the ends of her hair to her cheeks, then across the open neckline revealing her beautiful collarbone, and even brushing against the inside of her legs beneath her skirt.
Finally, he turned her around, half-supporting her arm, to make sure there was nothing wrong with the back of her neck before loosening his grip slightly.
"What are you doing?" Ruan Yi felt a chill run down her spine from his gaze; he made her feel extremely offended.
Ruan Yi slapped his hand away, took a half step back to create distance, and frowned.
"Mr. Fu, we are in the US now, and the legal consequences of workplace sexual harassment are much stricter than in China."
Fu Jingchen froze, the urgency in his eyes slowly subsided, leaving only a deep sense of helplessness.
He pinched the bridge of his nose and apologized in a hoarse voice.
"I'm sorry, I lost my composure."
My guesses about her were almost finalized, but the words stuck in my throat, and I couldn't say them.
If I tell her, she'll just think I'm talking nonsense.
But he had no intention of giving up. His gaze followed Ruan Yi's retreating figure as she walked toward the desk. Fu Jingchen clenched his fist, his knuckles turning white.
Pei Lian is investigating and trying to sort things out, and he is also doing his best to find a way to bring her to her senses.
No matter how covert Gu Zhi's methods are, he must tear off that disguise, no matter how much it costs.
The man's thoughts were filled with a resolute determination, like burning one's boats.
Ruan Yigang was tidying up the documents at his desk when the office door was suddenly pushed open.
Assistant Li, his face pale, knocked urgently on the door and entered.
"Mr. Fu, the Anderson family has made a new move."
"Serren suddenly changed tactics, joining forces with three investment banks to obtain a vulnerability report on our European regional energy projects. They are now working with regulatory agencies to exert pressure, saying they want to thoroughly investigate the project's compliance!"
Assistant Li paused, then spoke even faster.
“They definitely tampered with things behind the scenes. Our procedures were fully compliant with standards. The evidence of violations is still under investigation. The stock market has already reacted, but the decline is not significant at present.”
"But... this time the other party is aiming to undermine our position, which is completely different from our previous strategy of confronting each other with capital."
Ruan Yi was stunned, somewhat unable to believe it.
"Didn't they say the countermeasures were already effective? Didn't they say last week that the Anderson family had compromised?"
Assistant Li looked at Ruan Yi, his tone heavy.
"Anderson's side is now determined."
"And... something happened with the Anderson family."
"Serren was attacked in a bombing on his private yacht last Monday. It was a terrorist attack. The perpetrator has been identified as a rival of the Anderson family."
"He...is dead?" Ruan Yi's voice trembled slightly.
Is this the United States? An absolute empire of freedom, so free that gunfire and explosions are commonplace.
"The person didn't die, but their face was completely disfigured, and it's said that the burn area exceeds 70%."
Assistant Li lowered his voice, "The news has been kept under wraps until yesterday. He is still the head of the Anderson family, but his style of doing things has changed a lot."
"They're attacking us like madmen right now, and their attack intensity has doubled compared to before."
Ruan Yi felt a chill run down her spine. Could the explosion have changed her personality drastically, and she be determined to get revenge for the time she kicked him in the groin?
Fu Jingchen frowned, his fingers tapping rapidly on the table. He wasn't afraid of the losses, but rather puzzled. The bombing was clearly the work of a third party...
Why did Seren blame NovaVoy instead?
Has he shown up since he was injured?
Fu Jingchen suddenly spoke, his voice still calm.
"Just yesterday, at a family meeting. Apparently, he wore a metal mask the whole time, so you couldn't see anything through him."
Ruan Yi sighed. She could understand it. After all, that man loved to show off and cared a lot about his image. He couldn't even pull off a proper masquerade ball act.
Now that things have turned out this way, their mentality is probably completely distorted.
Fu Jingchen narrowed his eyes, a glint of shrewdness flashing in them.
Something's not right.
Although Thrallen is arrogant, he is by no means a brainless person. Why would he suddenly and illogically turn his attention to NovaVoy again, regardless of the cost?
There are other hidden reasons behind this.
"Notify the legal and public relations departments that there will be a meeting in the conference room in ten minutes."
Fu Jingchen looked up at Ruan Yi, his gaze sweeping over the light blue under her eyes, and his brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.
There was an unconscious, subtle tenderness in his tone.
"If Xiaoyi didn't sleep well, lie down on the sofa in the office for a while. I'll have Assistant Li keep you updated on the meeting content later."
When the man said this, his dark circles were clearly comparable to those of a panda.
Ruan Yi paused, her hand holding the document pausing, feeling bewildered, and glared at him.
"What time is it? You want me to sleep?"
Such a big event, of course she had to stay close to the front lines.
