Chapter 53 The Loser
The ward was filled with the pungent smell of disinfectant, and the pure white sheets made the man's face look even paler.
The surgical wound was still throbbing, but it couldn't outweigh the stifling feeling of being imprisoned.
Even the windows in the VIP wards were locked.
"Even if you can't let me go, you should at least give me back my phone, right?"
The nurse avoided eye contact, and when he pressed her for answers, she stammered, the answer of which was obvious.
The man turned his head to look at the IV needle stuck in the back of his hand. The clear liquid was slowly dripping down the tube. He grabbed the thin tube connected to the needle, his eyes filled with anxiety.
The needle will be pulled out at the root in the next second, and they won't care about bleeding.
The nurse rushed forward to stop them, and then heard a soft sound as the ward door was pushed open.
He suddenly looked up and saw a man in a custom-made suit with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms walking into the ward.
The man's brows were more relaxed than usual, and there was a faint warmth in his eyes, as if something pleasant had happened not long ago.
But when that gentle gaze met his eyes, it vanished abruptly, leaving only coldness and indifference.
If it weren't for the conflict between Zhou Wan and Fu Wang, he wouldn't have stepped into this ward.
"That's it, it's been restored?"
Fu Jingchen's voice was very soft. His gaze swept over the person struggling to sit up on the bed, and a faint smile appeared on his lips.
"What's going on? Is your wound healing too fast and you want to get a few more stitches?"
Fu Wang felt a sharp pain from the stitches on his chest being pulled, but he ignored it and glared at the man in front of him.
"Fu Jingchen! Why won't you let me transfer to another hospital and return to China? I want to see Ruan Yi!"
"See Xiaoyi?"
He feigned confusion, but a mocking smile lingered in his eyes.
"Would Xiaoyi want to see... someone who made a promise to her, then turned around and caused trouble, ending up half-dead from a crash?"
Fu Wang's breath hitched, as if an invisible hand was gripping his throat, and his voice became hoarse.
"I...I had an accident!"
From Fu Jingchen's words, it's clear that the other party already knows he's not Ruan Yi's boyfriend.
This was nothing more than a performance he got through the "interview," a fake show to escape his slump.
Shame, anger, resentment, and panic nearly made him lose control of his emotions.
Fu Wang clenched his back teeth tightly and forced out a rebuttal through the gaps between his teeth.
"Ruan Yi agreed to be my girlfriend, really, officially—my girlfriend! After the car accident!"
The man's smile froze, and the composure in his eyes vanished instantly.
"Did his kitten run off to someone else?"
Fu Wang's words were like a needle piercing his bone marrow, causing the sinister look in his eyes to spread infinitely.
"Officially together?" he repeated the words.
“Fu Wang, have you forgotten where you are right now? You’ve only been out of the ICU for a short time, and you think Xiao Yi’s ‘promise’ was a promise of love…”
"Or is it—a comforting thought that you might die on the operating table?"
The man walked to the window, turned his back to the hospital bed, and looked out the window, his calm tone filled with sarcasm.
"It's because Xiaoyi is too kind; she felt pity for a half-dead loser."
Fu Wang's tone suddenly rose, almost cracking.
"No! Ruan Yi has feelings for me!"
"Otherwise, why would we have held him down back then..."
"He's exactly what bad women like!"
"That old rascal who stirs up trouble."
Listening to Fu Wang's sincere, almost stubborn tone.
The refined mask that the man had maintained for so long began to crack at this moment.
The composure in his eyes shattered, replaced by an almost obsessive tremor.
"It's that feeling of losing control again."
A trapped beast, as if about to break free, surged within his chest.
An extreme emotion, even at the cost of everything, that is, not wanting her to go to someone else, even to the point of mutual destruction.
Her choice could easily overturn all his rationality at any moment.
"Right now, you can't even control your own life, you don't even have a way to contact her, do you think a simple 'yes' will count?"
Fu Jingchen's gaze swept over Fu Wang's pale face, carrying a condescending malice and scrutiny.
“That guy from the Shen family was able to take over a branch company at such a young age and quickly double the profits. At your age, I was already a core decision-maker in the group.”
"Besides throwing tantrums, racing tattoos, and clinging to a position in the company waiting to be inherited, what else can you do?"
Fu Wang's pupils trembled, his shoulders slumped, and the light in his eyes dimmed little by little, leaving only the embarrassment and helplessness after being mocked.
That's right, Fu Jingchen is right, he is not good enough for Ruan Yi at all.
Looking at Fu Wang's appearance, the man's fierceness disappeared, and he regained his refined demeanor, his eyes narrowing as he smiled.
It was as if the person who had just spoken so vehemently was not him.
"Fu Wang, focus on recovering from your injuries and stop thinking about unrealistic things."
He gently patted the shoulder on the hospital bed, his tone even carrying a hint of "concern".
"Some people and some things are not for you to covet."
After saying that, he turned and left, the ward door closing with a soft "click" as it locked.
Fu Wang remained frozen in that position for a long time until the sharp pain in his chest reminded him that he was still alive, and then he slowly loosened his clenched hands.
Fu Jingchen's words were like sharp fragments, grinding repeatedly into his mind.
The more I tried to refute, the clearer those sharp words became—useless, unworthy, unable to even control my own life…
He closed his eyes, trying to shut out those sounds.
But as soon as I closed my eyes, my mind exploded with thoughts.
It's all Ruan Yi's idea.
The girl's sly smile, her directness when she stared at him and swallowed, the cute teeth marks she left on his collarbone—every vivid little expression of hers.
Those feelings of affection in my heart, like wildly growing vines, instantly filled my entire chest.
His first love... was a "bad woman," so much so that he could never see another bad woman in his dreams again.
Fu Jingchen wants him to give up? Wants him to admit he's not good enough for her?
Fu Wang slowly opened his eyes. The redness in his eyes had not yet faded, but something else had appeared.
The thing that was crushed and then pieced back together was harder and hotter than before.
He can't just admit it like that.
He couldn't let Fu Jingchen laugh at him, and even more so... he couldn't let Ruan Yi fall for someone else!
When the fingers clenched again, the knuckles were no longer pale, but had a stubborn red hue.
The wound in his chest was throbbing with pain, but it made him more lucid than ever before. He wanted to get better, he wanted to go back.
Ruan Yi's feelings for him were not the cheap sympathy that Fu Jingchen claimed.
Certain emotions are growing wildly in my heart like wildfire.
It gets deeper every day, uncontrollable, and needing no control.
“Ruan Yi…” the man muttered to himself in a low voice, the last syllable carrying a hint of grievance that he himself was unaware of.
"Could you please not fall in love with anyone else...?"
The defeated dog, drenched by the rain, contained all its unease and anticipation in this self-serving plea.
He had no idea that the girl would continue to contact him after that.
"Fu Wang, are you awake today? Did you have surgery?"
“I asked Fu Jingchen about your situation, and it turns out you're still…”
"My birthday wish this year is that you will get better, okay?"
The messages weren't frequent, but the girl certainly never forgot about him.
In the lounge of the private airport, a private plane is about to take off through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Fu Jingchen's fingertips held the phone that belonged to Fu Wang. When the screen lit up, cracks appeared on the text.
He flipped through the records from a few days ago; those brief but warm greetings felt like red-hot needles, piercing his eyes one by one.
Fu Wang's words were not empty talk.
An almost twisted rage gripped his heart, shattering his composed facade and revealing a terrifying ferocity surging in his pupils, as if he wanted to tear everything in front of him apart.
Staring at the last four words on the screen: "Waiting for you to come back."
His knuckles turned pale from the force, and without hesitation, he raised his hand and threw the phone into the metal trash can.
Silence returned to the lounge, broken only by the heavy breathing of the man.
"The kitten needs a little punishment."
