Chapter Thirty-Three: Absorbing Spiritual Energy

Inside the expert's training area, Chen Jing was sitting alone, entering a meditative state according to the techniques taught by his master.

He looked up and could see a deep darkness.

"I am now in a state of divine self..." Chen Jing thought, as the previous teachings flashed through his mind.

It is best to absorb spiritual energy in a meditative state to avoid absorbing too much at once, which could lead to seeing deities, falling into evil, and becoming possessed without realizing it!

Chen Jing's thoughts spread outwards, capturing a black thread in the mist outside the window.

According to the master, one cannot capture grayish-white spiritual energy, but only spiritual energy that is visible in color.

The problem is, all the spiritual energy Chen Jing saw was black! There wasn't a single grayish-white one!

The black threads, following the thought, naturally passed through the window and came to Chen Jing's body, silently merging into him.

Chen Jing seemed to hear the sound of himself swallowing saliva, and the sound of something filling his blood.

He felt himself falling, the blackness above his head blurred by part of his divine self. The wisp of spiritual energy naturally entered the blackness and fell from it.

That wisp of spiritual energy, carrying fragmented knowledge and scenes, entered Chen Jing's mind, like the illogical nightmare of the most insane mental patient. He saw himself fighting, killing, being killed, being struck by lightning, being burned by flames, seeing the corpse of his unfamiliar lover in front of him, seeing his burned-down home, seeing his thigh being gnawed on by a corpse...

These scenes, these fragments, are layered upon each other, presented in a fleeting, superficial way.

Suddenly, Chen Jing saw wisps of grayish-white energy emanating from his body, merging into the deathly gray mist, and disappearing completely.

Those terrible memories subsided and disappeared, transforming into some kind of nourishment that sustained Chen Jing's mind and body.

He returned to his previous state, and apart from feeling a slight increase in his spiritual power, nothing seemed to have changed.

This… the black entity above my head can actually purify spiritual energy! It only absorbs the portion I need? Chen Jing wondered in surprise.

Chen Jing continued to try, capturing several more strands of spiritual energy and absorbing them continuously.

He felt himself getting closer and closer to the Blood Realm, and the spiritual energy not only gave him higher spiritual power, but also came with bits and pieces of knowledge and skills.

After absorbing spiritual energy for an unknown period of time, Chen Jing naturally exited that state, no longer exhibiting the ability to see spiritual energy once he focused.

This is what Master said before... Absorb until "natural saturation" or "half of the body separates from the divine self," Chen Jing thought, stood up, and felt that the whole world seemed to become much clearer.

Hmm, the Body Realm must be the process of spiritual energy transforming the body, and the sign of the transformation being complete is the Blood Realm where the Qi and blood seem to form a swimming fish? Chen Jing thought about it and his understanding of cultivation became even deeper.

This is something that's hard to understand through words alone! Indeed, practice makes perfect. Chen Jing thought happily.

Chen Jing felt that, at the current pace, he might be able to attempt to cross the threshold of the Blood Realm before even starting the testing mission, thus becoming a true cultivator.

"Body Realm" is a term used to refer to people with extraordinary abilities, and they are not entirely considered cultivators.

Cultivators... what abilities could cultivators possess? Chen Jing immediately thought of paper cranes fluttering in the air, burning talismans, and those corpses standing up. He subconsciously ignored things like chain mines that seemed out of place.

He saw his master sitting opposite him, his lap resting on the sword he always carried, seemingly also practicing. Shortly after Chen Jing opened his eyes, his master opened his eyes as well, and began to teach Chen Jing various things and answer his questions.

"...You need to know the abilities and weaknesses of cultivators who cultivate spiritual energy, also known as corpse cultivators, corpse drivers, and so on. If they are the backers of the Black Hand, you will be dealing with them frequently."

"Recently deceased corpses can generate spiritual energy, and corpse cultivators obtain their spiritual energy mostly by absorbing the spiritual energy of those corpses and ghosts."

"When a cultivator of spiritual energy reaches the Blood Realm, they will possess a corpse as hard as a zombie. Weapons will be unable to inflict serious injury unless they hit vital points. Their vital points will be the brain and heart. Attacking the spine and key bones is also possible, but only with powerful weapons or sharp swords. They can also create will-o'-the-wisps, which can provide illumination and create a cold and terrifying environment. The Spirit Master can also move lighter objects remotely with their mind, which is a ghostly ability."

"Only upon reaching the Dan Realm can one be called a true corpse driver, a true corpse cultivator. Before that, they are at most called corpse warriors! Corpse cultivators possess much stronger bodies; only bullets hitting vital points pose a threat. They can extend their spiritual power to control nearby corpses, turning them into obedient zombies. The stronger a zombie's body was in life, the stronger it will be after death. Depending on the Daoist scriptures they have studied, corpse drivers can also use many spells. They are most skilled in spells related to cold and vengeful spirits. Corpse drivers can also create many spiritual artifacts related to corpses, such as the soul-summoning banner and soul-nourishing jar from mythology. Those powerful spiritual artifacts can only be made when they reach a higher level of cultivation, but if they have read the relevant Daoist scriptures, they can create weakened versions."

That black-armored knight was actually a Dan Realm cultivator? How terrifying… Chen Jing thought, able to withstand bullet bombardment, suppress an entire squad single-handedly, and even revive the enemy's corpses… As he pondered this, he realized his master hadn't mentioned the abilities of a Body Realm cultivator, so he asked.

The expert replied:

“Physical Realm cultivators will possess some of the abilities of Blood Realm cultivators. For example, a Physical Realm corpse cultivator might be able to make a part of their body resemble a zombie, remotely control small objects, or create will-o'-the-wisps…”
