Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Lonely City

The expert looked directly into Chen Jing's eyes and said slowly, "Although I don't know the type of spiritual energy you've absorbed, I've read about your abilities in some books."

"Those belong to three shadowy assassins, spy sects, and families: the Fei family, the Hidden Tower, and the Azure Ruins."

Fei family, Hidden Tower? Chen Jing instantly recalled that when he entered the cabin, a captured female assassin had mentioned these two names.

He suppressed his curiosity and continued listening.

"Take the Fei family as an example. Their Blood Realm cultivators are skilled at stealth in the shadows, adept at mimicking others' voices with ventriloquism, and adept at using all sorts of incredibly realistic illusions," the expert said. "The Fei family is probably known as the Shadow Family for this reason. The Shadow Fei Family."

"The Hidden Tower is also adept at concealing their whereabouts. Their members are said to be present in various organizations, and they have territory in every city, but they are very mysterious and difficult to find. Blood Realm cultivators of the Hidden Tower are also skilled at concealing their whereabouts and may also possess the ability to become invisible."

"The same goes for Cangxu, but Cangxu is an unorthodox sect," the expert said. "Although Yinlou and the Fei family aren't exactly reputable sects, at least their methods aren't demonic. Cangxu is different. Their disciples, starting from the Blood Realm, are dispatched to various sects and organizations as spies, communicating and controlling each other through unimaginable means. Behind the scenes, they plot conspiracies, assassinations, and even high-ranking members use the ability to change appearances to impersonate and replace others. For them, invisibility is common, an ability even low-ranking members possess."

"This...no wonder they say Cangxu is evil; it sounds like a shapeshifter," Chen Jing thought. He asked, "Isn't there a way to detect Cangxu's disciples? The spiritual energy they absorb during cultivation is different; they're easy to spot."

The expert wasn't annoyed by Chen Jing's interruption. Instead, he explained, "This is why I know so much about Cangxu. It's something every disciple needs to know and be wary of. Cangxu disciples are very good at mimicking other types of spiritual energy and can use the abilities of the people they replace. This is why they are so difficult to detect."

The expert concluded, "All three forces are adept at operating in the shadows. I believe your spiritual energy type is similar to that of one of them. The most likely is the Hidden Tower, but the other two may cultivate the same type of spiritual energy as the Hidden Tower."

Chen Jing thought for a moment. The Fei family excelled in illusion techniques, Hidden Tower was known for concealing their whereabouts, and Cangxu was skilled at replacing others and imitation. Hidden Tower did seem the most likely candidate. He eagerly asked, "What is Hidden Tower's cultivation method?"

The expert shook his head: "I don't have the Hidden Tower's cultivation method. It must have been in the sect's library before, but now the sect's library is empty. The books have either been destroyed or taken away by the enemy."

Ah… Chen Jing was slightly disappointed, but then felt that this was normal; ordinary sect disciples couldn't possibly master the cultivation methods of other sects…

"However," the expert added, "you can create your own mental cultivation method."

Create your own cultivation method? Chen Jing was taken aback.

The expert said, "Where do you think the mental techniques come from? The mental techniques are just summaries of the predecessors, a concise outline, and the specifics vary from person to person when practicing."

“Since the predecessors of these three sects could summarize their cultivation methods, why can’t you? Moreover, you can know their methods of cultivation, and you can use those methods to deduce their cultivation methods, which is a proven track record.”

"Yes..." Chen Jing's eyes lit up. He immediately asked, "Then how do these three families cultivate..."

Before he could even finish asking, he thought of Cangxu's methods: infiltrating other organizations and becoming traitors...

Chen Jing's expression was strange. He remembered the invitation Luo Jiu had given him before, inviting him to join the Black Hand's ranks!

Before I could even figure out how to sneak in, an invitation arrived...

Thinking of this, Chen Jing quickly recounted Luo Jiu's invitation and added details about the black-armored knight, who was called "Priest," and the existence of the "corpse driver" when he infiltrated the ship.

The expert pondered, "Try becoming invisible in front of me?"

Chen Jing began to try to become invisible. At first, he felt that entering the "dark sea" was particularly difficult, as if he was being pulled and tugged by something. But soon, that pulling sensation disappeared.

The expert said, "Get up and run around a bit."

Upon hearing his master's words, Chen Jing ran around the expert once.

The expert remained seated and said, "It's ready."

Chen Jing deactivated his invisibility and waited curiously for what would happen next.

The expert said, "In my judgment, to completely see through your invisibility, one must at least be a practitioner of the Mingjing realm. The Mingjing realm is the next level after the Qi realm. It means understanding one's own mind, understanding the world, possessing powerful intuition, and sensing the spring breeze before it even stirs."

“A Ming Realm cultivator is a big shot anywhere, a powerful figure, enough to be the pillar of a small or medium-sized sect or family. There are probably no Ming Realm cultivators in Ash City. Of course, there are other ways to detect your presence. Perhaps in the eyes of that corpse driver, you are just a gust of cold wind passing by him.”

Chen Jing was shocked: "That's amazing? I'm only at the Body Refinement Realm, and it takes four realms to see through my invisibility ability?"

The expert glanced at him: "I'm talking about innate, passive perception. There are quite a few techniques, pills, and magical artifacts that can detect you. For example, for a cultivator of battle qi, once he reaches the Dan realm, if you have murderous intent towards him and attack him, he will have a strong intuition to sense your presence, thus making advance predictions and responses. Area attacks can also force you out, such as a corpse driver manipulating yin winds to unleash terrifying will."
