Chen Jing opened the "One Hundred and Thirty-Two Spiritual Talismans of Shamans, Priests, and Sorcerers" and struggled to read it, relying on the few words he had learned after transmigrating.
"From right to left, from top to bottom, it's really inhuman, and there's no punctuation..." Chen Jing muttered to himself.
As mentioned in the preface, "One Hundred and Thirty-Two Spiritual Talismans of Shamans, Priests and Prayers" is one of the Taoist canons. The many spiritual talismans recorded in it are mainly used in sacrificial rites. Most of them can also be used for other purposes such as metaphysics, divination, spiritual communication, exorcism, praying for disaster relief, prolonging life, cultivation, and summoning spirits with slight modifications.
The so-called Taoist Canon is a text that truly possesses knowledge and power. Those who possess spiritual power can utilize the knowledge of the Taoist Canon to transform runes infused with spiritual power into talismans that can function!
Chen Jing looked at it very carefully, and he found that there were still many words he didn't recognize, so he had to guess the meaning from the context, and there were even paragraphs he couldn't understand.
"Compulsory education is really important..." Chen Jing thought to himself as he turned the first page.
"First, take a quick look through them and see if there are any familiar ones among the talismans," the expert advised. "Later, if you have the opportunity, I can introduce you to a private tutor to learn to read and write, and then you can study them in more detail."
Chen Jing nodded and quickly flipped through the pages.
"Praying for auspicious charms, praying for fire-avoidance charms..." Chen Jing was getting a headache.
These talismans all have accompanying illustrations and explanatory text. The upper part of some talismans looks like a combination of vertical and horizontal lines, diagonal lines and curves. When taken out individually, the lines reminded Chen Jing of a section of the Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams diagram he had seen before his transmigration. The lower part looked like a series of circular mazes, stacked and surrounded by characters such as "口" (mouth), "丙" (bing), and the winding and intertwined character "人" (ren), which made Chen Jing dizzy.
Soon, Chen Jing saw the first familiar talisman, with only minor differences in details.
This sense of familiarity did not come from memory; he hadn't paid much attention to the altar when he entered the ship's cabin cell. It came from a dream!
The altar where my younger sister, Wan Tong, lay in my previous nightmare!
Chen Jing subconsciously looked down at the image below the name of the talisman. Although there were unfamiliar characters in it, Chen Jing simply ignored them.
Pray for the Flying Corpse Demon Talisman!
The name sent shivers down Chen Jing's spine, as if an electric current was coursing from his groin up his spine and into his brain.
What does this mean? Is the purpose of the blood sacrifice to pray for the birth of an evil spirit?
Chen Jing quickly said to the expert who was resting nearby, "Master... I recognize this talisman, it feels familiar!"
He handed over the book, showing the page with the Qi Fei Corpse Demon Talisman.
As the experts carefully examined it, Chen Jing quickly added, "There seem to be some minor differences compared to what I remember, but it's generally the same."
The expert glanced at it and said, "I've made a note of it. Now see if you recognize any other talismans."
You wrote it down? You memorized it after just one glance?
Chen Jing took the book, thought for a moment, and guessed that he must have memorized the name. How could he have memorized the symbol after just one glance?
He continued flipping through the pages, this time even faster, using the vague sense of familiarity to search for similar talismans.
Soon, Chen Jing found several other familiar talismans. After silently noting their names, he handed them to the expert.
Although Chen Jing couldn't recognize the name of each talisman, he recognized some of the characters, such as "prayer," "blessing," "descend," "blood," "mind," "qi," and "universe," etc.
The expert put away his book and said, "Go and call your younger brother first, then take your younger siblings to find the innkeeper, Su Yuan. She knows who in Eggshell District is renting out houses. Just say that I introduced you."
Chen Jing nodded. Su Yuan's inn was very famous and very lively in the Eggshell District. Although it was more like a tavern than an inn, scavengers who found some good things and exchanged them for money would go there to live a life of debauchery and would bring one or two girls to the inn to spend the night together.
Seeing that his master had given no further instructions, Chen Jing decided to ask all the questions he had accumulated earlier.
"Master, what happens after we overdraw, no, exhaust our spiritual power?" Chen Jing couldn't help but ask.
The expert stuffed the book back into his bag and said in the same tone, "In the worst case, it can turn you into a monster or a demon. The so-called 'going into a trance' is partly used to describe this state."
So there's another part... This matches my guess... Chen Jing muttered to himself.
"Master, when you ate something like the Black Pill and were able to see the deity, what did the 'deity' look like?" Chen Jing asked in a curious tone.
He wanted to know if everyone's divine self was surrounded by a pure, dense darkness, as if it were the embodiment of knowledge and power!
Chen Jing suspected that it was the reason he had transmigrated, and also the reason he had survived the previous events.
Chen Jing said quietly, "If everyone has it, then I can only say that I'm overthinking it. But if everyone has it, Master wouldn't have left it unmentioned... Hmm, maybe he thought it wasn't important, so he didn't mention it? That's also possible, Master has always been a man of few words."
The expert said, "It saw my image, nothing more. It hovered above me; it was the image of myself within my mind."
Thump, thump. Chen Jing seemed to hear his own heart pounding. He didn't show any abnormality, but instead asked other questions, such as where to investigate the blood sacrifice incident and how to start the investigation. The expert was quite patient and taught Chen Jing some techniques in detail, and told Chen Jing to conduct it secretly and not to reveal that he knew about the blood sacrifice, so as not to arouse the vigilance of the mastermind.
Chen Jing thought to himself, "My master knows so much... he's nothing like a simple soldier."
