Chapter Thirty-Four: The First Battle

Chen Jing and the experts stood facing each other, both carrying practice swords.

Chen Jing chose a shorter sword that he rarely used on ordinary days because he found that the longer and larger the weapon, the more difficult it became for the spiritual energy to spread and drag it into the "dark sea" along with his body.

Chen Jing muttered to himself:

"The most suitable weapons for me would be pistols, short swords, or daggers..."

Chen Jingxian first offered his greetings, followed by the experts returning the greetings.

The expert, as always, casually picked up a practice sword and, instead of launching a preemptive attack, let Chen Jing make the first move.

Chen Jing spread his spiritual power, and his figure disappeared inch by inch.

This time he confirmed once again that his invisibility speed would slow down when under the watchful eyes of experts, making it difficult to use in the ever-changing close combat.

So… there’s only one chance. Chen Jing thought, but didn’t launch a surprise attack the moment he became invisible.

This is to prevent the experts from calculating his movement speed and swinging their swords into thin air!

However, the expert did not do as Chen Jing expected. Instead, he closed his eyes, turned the wooden knife diagonally downwards, and pointed it at the ground.

Chen Jing slowly circled around, aiming to launch a surprise attack from the expert's left rear side, the position where the expert would be least likely to react.

Although invisibility seemed to also hide sound, he was still subconsciously afraid that he would make a sound when he moved, so he walked very slowly.

Upon arriving at the location, Chen Jing suddenly wondered if the experts had also taken precautions, anticipating his attack from the most difficult-to-react position and thus making a preemptive preparation.

Chen Jing suppressed his inner impulse and changed his position again.

For some reason, a sentence naturally came to mind:

"He only considered the second layer of this psychological game..."

"Damn it!" Chen Jing cursed himself inwardly, deciding to stop thinking about it and launch an attack from behind the expert.

He cautiously approached, until he was within striking distance of a step away from swinging his knife.

Practice gently stabbing with your sword!

Just as the stab was about to land, a sudden change occurred.

Suddenly, Chen Jing seemed to see a dark golden hourglass appear in the shadow of the expert's body, with sand falling from top to bottom. Suddenly, the hourglass flipped!

It seemed as if an ancient, giant bell was ringing in my ears; a sundial stood tall, its shadow frozen in place; and a water clock dripped, its water droplets making a sound.

This scene seems to be saying:

Time passes, and all things will eventually perish; no one can escape this cruel fate!

The expert seized the moment, and just as Chen Jing's wooden sword got close, he turned around and swung his sword. Chen Jing's wooden sword was deflected, and he was also cut by the wooden knife.

To Chen Jing's surprise, he lost his first battle of magic without any ability to resist.

The experts waited until Chen Jing had recovered and the fight was over before speaking:

"This is a martial art for dealing with surprise attacks; I call it 'Point Time'."

"I also used it to defeat the wandering spirit that produced the Black Pill."

Amazing… Chen Jing thought to himself, this was completely different from what he had seen before, such as controlling corpses, flying paper cranes, and burning talismans.

Is this what battle cultivation is? The techniques of cultivators who practice battle qi?

It turns out I was just outsmarting thin air all along...

Seeing Chen Jing's expression, the expert offered a suggestion: "'Point Time' is a very basic martial art, but the method of learning it has been lost. Even I myself can only use it and cannot teach it. There is a key point that I cannot teach you. It can only be learned by pushing the limits of willpower and becoming a 'Champion Marquis' of the Blood Realm Battle Cultivator. It is a very rare martial art. 'Point Time' allows you to react immediately when attacked, but as long as you are prepared, you will not be defeated immediately and can hold out for a while."

So, was I too careless, too confident in my invisibility? Chen Jing pondered. But martial arts are truly amazing…

Chen Jing asked:

"Master, can I also learn martial arts? Or is it only for warriors who cultivate battle qi?"

The expert replied:

"Martial arts is a type of magic, and magic is essentially the way and technique of applying spiritual power. Combat cultivators are best suited to learning and using various martial arts, but yours may not be, for example..."

He practiced making a cut with his knife, the blade catching the blazing flames, which then extinguished themselves as they passed through the air. Only the scalding heat proved that the flames had actually existed.

Chen Jing watched, his envy growing stronger.

Regardless of its power, this is just too cool!

The expert explained:

"This is called the Karmic Fire Sword. With your spiritual power attributes, it will be extremely difficult for you to learn it. It will take a lot of time, and even if you do learn it, the effect will be minimal, only producing small sparks."

Chen Jing suddenly remembered something and quickly asked, "Is there a martial art that's suitable for me?"

The expert nodded, acknowledging the question, and then asked:

Do you want more or less quality?

Chen Jing asked in confusion, "More or less?"

The expert explained:

"These are two major schools of warrior cultivators. Some warrior cultivators learn all kinds of martial arts, use all kinds of weapons and props, and even learn alchemy and talisman making to prepare for all kinds of situations. Other warrior cultivators specialize in one aspect, and everything else is secondary or even abandoned."

"There is no good or bad between the two major schools; each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Even within the Sword Pavilion, the practitioners are about half and half."

Looking at his master, dressed in tattered and shabby clothes, and with his ever-present weapon, Chen Jing thought to himself, "My master must belong to that specialized school..." and replied:

"I want to specialize in one area."

The expert nodded:

"This is the right choice. You are not a combat cultivator, so you can learn quickly and apply only a small portion of the martial arts."
