Chapter Sixty-Six: The Truth

Chen Jing's previous discussions with experts, as well as his own reflections, all pointed to one question.

How can one make their choice of elixirs imbued with Daoist energy appear natural and avoid arousing suspicion?

This is unavoidable, because no other option works. Giving up the opportunity to become a person with extraordinary abilities is completely unreasonable and would only arouse suspicion, while choosing other elixirs would lead to qi deviation.

Chen Jing's original plan gave him a high degree of confidence in naturally choosing the Dao Qi, but he never expected that Mo Wujiang would tell him that if he chose one of the several pills containing the life Qi, he would choose to take Chen Jing as his disciple.

This is a very heavy stake. If Chen Jing were a complete novice who knew nothing about this, he would definitely choose the pill of life energy when faced with a difficult choice!

How can I politely refuse?

What should I do?

what to do?

I don't have time to think about it anymore.

Chen Jing took a deep breath, feigning hesitation yet also making a firm decision, and replied:

“Mr. Mo, I want to become a person with extraordinary abilities who can create illusions.”

"Oh." Mo Wujiang's expression remained the same as always, with a smile: "Could you tell me why?"

Chen Jing's mind raced as he frantically searched for a reason, and finally, a flash of inspiration struck him.

“Mr. Mo, when I was injured before, I talked with the wounded men who hunted slave spirits. The magical illusions they described deeply attracted me, and I have always wanted to become such a person with extraordinary abilities.”

As Chen Jing answered, for some reason, he felt that Mo Wujiang's smile seemed a little more pronounced.

“You’ve made your choice.” Mo Wujiang walked to the cabinet, opened the drawer, and took out a small wooden box.

The wooden box was square and looked quite ordinary, but it closed perfectly.

"Go outside to take the pills," Mo Wujiang said.

Chen Jing nodded, feigning unease, and followed.

Upon arriving at a stone chamber, Mo Wujiang gestured for Chen Jing to sit cross-legged, then opened the wooden box, revealing the pills inside.

It was a black pill, yet it seemed like a dream, with various sounds and strange phantoms appearing.

Chen Jing felt an unconscious craving for the pill, like someone who had been starving all day seeing a delicious meal.

"Hmph." Mo Wujiang snorted coldly, and all those phantoms and auditory hallucinations vanished.

"Take it," Mo Wujiang said.

Chen Jing asked hesitantly, "Is there anything I need to prepare?"

"What preparations?" Mo Wujiang laughed. "Shall we get up and practice a set of boxing moves, run a lap around the outside, or perhaps pick out a few young ladies?"

Chen Jing blushed and remained silent, seemingly at a loss for words.

"You don't need anything. After you take the pill, you will see your body floating in the void, with nothing around you, while your soul is pulled downwards, away from your body, as if sinking into a swamp."

Mo Wujiang said, "At times like this, you just need to follow your instincts and resist the pulling force."

The divine self, the id, and the evil self… Thoughts flashed through Chen Jing’s mind, but he asked on the surface, “How do we fight against them?”

“Follow your instincts,” Mo Wujiang said. “Thinking too much is useless. Just follow your own instincts.”

Chen Jing nodded, nervously took the wooden box, and swallowed the pill in one gulp.

Seeing Chen Jing swallow the pill, Mo Wujiang watched absentmindedly from the side, showing no sign of nervousness.

In deep meditation, Chen Jing once again "saw his divine self," looking up to see his Frankenstein-like self and the source of darkness above him.

"The pulling force is so weak... As expected, the spiritual energy at the Body Realm level is either a part or a supplement to the spiritual energy at the Blood Realm level." Chen Jing silently sensed it.

He raised his head and silently asked the source of darkness a question he wanted to know.

"Did Mo Wujiang notice something was wrong with me?"

In a daze, ripples spread from the source of darkness, and scenes unfolded before Chen Jing in the darkness.

Chen Jing saw it; he saw himself walk into the Donglai Pawnshop and talk to the air behind the counter.

Looking at the two people beside him, he saw two Mo Wujiangs who looked exactly alike.

Listening to their conversation, watching himself talk to thin air and move forward with it, Chen Jing felt a chill run down his spine and goosebumps rose all over his body, as if he were watching a horror movie where he was the male lead.

He saw himself walking down the corridor, occasionally talking to thin air, with two identical people following beside him, completely ignoring Chen Jing and talking to each other.

Chen Jing could also hear the conversation between the two Mo Wujiangs:

...One Mo Wujiang, with a chilling smile, spoke to another Mo Wujiang: "Your apprentice, that little Zhang, tastes pretty good, doesn't he?"

“He’s been dead for too long,” the other Mo Wujiang coldly replied.

Chen Jing felt ice-cold all over, as if he had been trapped in an ice cellar.

It turns out that the reason for taking in disciples who cultivate life energy was to create a great elixir that Mo Wujiang could devour.

It turns out I've been talking to the phantom all along.

The visuals and sound shift to the moment when Chen Jing chooses the elixir:

“Mr. Mo, I want to become a person with extraordinary abilities who can create illusions.”

No one answered Chen Jing, while the two Mo Wujiangs talked in the back.

One of them, Mo Wujiang, who always had a smile on his face, said, "Look, your life force isn't very popular."

Mo Wujiang shook his head expressionlessly: "He was just lucky; he didn't have the chance to become my Blood Pill."

In the scene, Chen Jing said to the air, "Mr. Mo, when I was injured before, I talked to the wounded men who hunted slave spirits. The magical illusions they described deeply attracted me, and I have always wanted to become such a person with extraordinary abilities."
